New York Yankees Set To Become Only MLB Team Not To Host LGBTQ Pride Night
NEW YORK (CBS News) — The New York Yankees are known for standing out from the rest of the league. But this time, the 27-time World Series champions are taking some heat for it. They could soon become the only Major League Baseball team not to hold an LGBTQ Pride Night event. Twenty-four of the MLB’s 30 teams are set to hold gay pride celebrations this season and a total of 28 teams have held such events at some point. This week, Forbes reported the Los Angeles Angels will join the ranks by holding a Pride Night in June 2019. That would leave the Yankees as the lone holdout. “Pride Nights are really important to show the LGBTQ community that they are just as welcome as anyone else,” New York City Council Speaker Corey Johnson, the first openly gay man to hold that job and noted Red Sox fan , told CBS News in a statement. “The Yankees are one of the most famous sporting teams in the world. They should be leading by example.” “Let’s be honest — for a long time the world of sports felt closed off to gay people. Even now there are very few openly gay professional athletes,” he added. The Yankees have previously participated in GLAAD’s Spirit Day Campaign , which is organized by the group and the MLB to show support for LGBTQ youth. “As a lifelong Yankees fan, some of my favorite memories growing up are with my family at the games and when I came out it would have meant the world to me to see the Yankees recognize my community,” Rich Ferraro, GLAAD ‘s chief communications officer, told CBS News in a statement. “Though the Yankees have a history of being supportive of LGBTQ people, a LGBTQ Pride Night is a major moment to make sure all fans feel included in the game,” Ferraro said. The Yankees’ crosstown rival, the New York Mets, first held a Pride celebration during the 2016 season — the first of its kind among any Big Apple sports teams , the Mets said at the time. David Kilmnick, CEO of the LGBT Network , was the first person to pitch the idea of Pride Night to the Mets, according to NBC News , and he said he tried to do the same with the Yankees, despite being a lifelong Mets fan. It’s not only LGBTQ events, though — the Yankees have mostly avoided promotions with an “ethnic or cultural flavor,” The New York Times noted last year. The Yankees did not respond to CBS News’ request for comment, but a team spokesman told The Times that while the Yankees have chosen to refrain from holding a gay pride event at Yankee Stadium, there has been involvement “behind the scenes.” “Everyone of every nationality, religion, ethnicity or sexual orientation and/or preference is welcome at Yankee Stadium every day,” Jason Zillo told The Times in a 2017 statement. “We are a long-term believer in diversity and inclusion, and have always looked to create a safe and supportive environment for all fans to enjoy their experience here.” The sports world as a whole has slowly warmed to the LGBTQ community. In 2015, a Milwaukee Brewers minor league player, David Denson made baseball history when he came out as the first openly gay player in the MLB . In 2014, Michael Sam became the first openly gay player to be drafted by a National Football League team. Also in 2014, Jason Collins became the NBA’s first openly gay active player . “When I was a closeted high school football player, I thought I would be ostracized if I came out. It was tough. A lot has changed in the world since then but not enough,” Johnson, the city council speaker, said. Last month, the MLB entered a float in the NYC Pride March for the first time in its 49-year history . The league joined the NFL, NHL, NBA, MLS, WNBA and National Women’s Hockey League at the annual event, which Outsports dubbed the “ sportiest Pride March ever .” Same-sex marriage has been legal in New York state since the Marriage Equality Act took effect in July 2011. © 2018 CBS Interactive Inc. ANAHEIM (AP) — Ross Stripling pitched another gem and Justin Turner drove in two runs to lead the Los Angeles Dodgers to a 3-1 win over the Angels on Saturday night. Stripling (7-2) is making a strong case to make the AL All-Star team with another terrific outing. He allowed just one run and three hits — all by Mike Trout — in six innings. The right-hander struck out seven and walked none, and lowered his ERA to 2.14. After blowing a save opportunity on Friday night, Kenley Jansen pitched a perfect ninth to earn his 24th save. The 28-year-old Stripling retired nine of the last 10 batters he faced for the Dodgers, who have won five of their last six games. Trout went 3 for 3 against Stripling, including a solo home run to left-center field in the sixth inning for his 25th of the season and 50th RBI. Trout, who finished 3 for 4 overall in his 11th three-hit game of the season, is now 5 for 5 with two home runs in his career against Stripling. The Angels’ Shohei Ohtani fouled a ball off what appeared to be his right foot in the ninth during his at-bat against Jansen. After a trainer, interpreter and Mike Scioscia went to check on him, he stayed in the game and struck out — but hobbled back to the dugout. Turner hit a two-out single in the fifth inning off Taylor Cole (0-1) to give the Dodgers a 2-0 lead. Yasiel Puig hit a two-out, solo home run to center field off Noe Ramirez in the ninth to put the Dodgers ahead 3-1. Deck McGuire made his second start for the Angels. He allowed one hit and struck out six in three innings in his first career appearance against the Dodgers. In the fourth inning, reliever Jose Alvarez got Cody Bellinger and Matt Kemp to ground out, but then walked Yasmani Grandal and was pulled in favor of Cole. TRAINER’S ROOM Dodgers: RHP Yimi Garcia (right forearm inflammation) was placed on the disabled list. … LHP Rich Hill (sore neck) is expected to make his scheduled start on Tuesday against San Diego. … RHP Walker Buehler (right rib micro fracture) is scheduled to throw a five-inning simulated game Sunday. Dave Roberts expects him to make a start next weekend against the Angels. Angels: LHP Tyler Skaggs (right adductor strain) will throw a bullpen this weekend. … RHP Jim Johnson (lumbar strain) is scheduled to start a rehab assignment at Class A Inland Empire on Sunday. UP NEXT Dodgers: LHP Alex Wood (5-5, 3.84 ERA) got the win in the Dodgers’ 17-1 victory over Pittsburgh last week. He allowed one run on six hits and walked none in six innings. Angels: LHP Andrew Heaney (4-6, 3.94 ERA) is grooving in his last six starts at home, where he is 4-1 with a 0.88 ERA. He’s 0-2 with a 6.10 ERA in two career starts against the Dodgers. SAMARA, Russia (CBSSports) — The semifinals are set. After France, Belgium and England all clinched a spot in the World Cup semis, Croatia joined them on Saturday after beating host Russia 4-3 in penalty kicks. A wild 1-1 match after 90 minutes saw each team score again in extra time, with penalty kicks deciding consecutive matches for both teams. Croatia goalkeeper Danijel Subasic once again came up big, making some big saves in regulation, one after getting injured, and saving Russia’s first penalty kick. Ivan Rakitic scored the winning penalty as Croatia returns to the semifinals for the first time since 1998. Ivan Rakitic of Croatia celebrates scoring his team’s fifth penalty, the winning penalty, in the penalty shoot out during the 2018 FIFA World Cup Russia Quarter Final match between Russia and Croatia at Fisht Stadium on July 7, 2018 in Sochi, Russia. (Photo by Shaun Botterill/Getty Images) It was a match that, frankly, was pretty boring for the first 30 minutes. After that, it was far from it, producing one of the most intense, heart-wrenching games we’ve seen in Russia. With the score 0-0 and neither team looking like much of a threat, Russia start Denis Cheryshev scored the opener with one of the goals of the tournament, freezing Subasic from outside the box. But that lead was short lived. Croatia began to control the ball more and play down the wing, and that’s when Mario Mandzukic found Andrej Kramaric for the equalizer eight minutes later. The teams then went back and forth in regulation, and neither could find the winner, sending the game into extra time. Both teams went 30 extra minutes in their round of 16 clash, with Russia beating Spain and Croatia beating Denmark. And in the extra session, it looked like Croatia was well on their way to the victory and avoiding penalty kicks. Domagoj Vida headed home from a corner kick in the 101st minute for the 2-1 lead. But then, with just five minutes to go, Mario Fernandes played the role of hero, heading home a set piece to make it 2-2. And in the penalty kicks, Russia lost its composure. Fyodor Smolov tried a cheeky lofted shot to open it, and Subasic read it well to save it. Fernandez went from hero to villain, missing the goal completely on his opportunity, as Rakitic sent his team into the next round. And with that, the field is set. It’s Belgium vs. France on Tuesday, and England vs. Croatia on Wednesday.

Report: Former UCLA Star Found Dead After 11-Hour Standoff In Sherman Oaks; Shots Fired
SHERMAN OAKS (CBSLA) — A former UCLA and NBA basketball star was found dead inside a Sherman Oaks home Saturday morning after he barricaded himself inside the residence for 11 hours following a shootout with officers. The victim was identified as 27-year-old Tyler Honeycutt, according to TMZ. FILE — UCLA forward Tyler Honeycutt plays against Oregon State in the first half Saturday, Feb. 12, 2011, at Pauley Pavilion in Westwood. (Los Angeles Times/Getty Images) The incident began when Los Angeles police responded to a man with a gun call in the 4900 block of Tyrone Avenue around 5 p.m. Friday and the man fired at officers, who returned fire. The suspect barricaded himself inside the home, so police set up a perimeter and called in a SWAT team, according to LAPD Officer Jeff Lee. A SWAT team entered the home and located an unresponsive male, who was pronounced dead at the scene, the LAPD tweeted at 3:45 a.m. Saturday. Police later confirmed that the suspect appeared to have died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound, and was not struck by any gunfire from the officers. No officers were injured. Some residents were evacuated during the standoff. It’s unclear if they’ve been allowed to return home. Honeycutt played two seasons at UCLA from 2009 to 2011 and then spent two seasons with the Sacramento Kings after being taken in the second round of the 2011 NBA Draft. He then spent several seasons playing in Europe. At the time of his death, he was playing for the club BC Khimki in Russia. Investigators from the department’s Force Investigation Division will look into the incident. (©2018 CBS Local Media, a division of CBS Radio Inc. All Rights Reserved.
