FREEPORT, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) — A two-alarm fire destroyed a storefront overnight in Freeport . Approximately 120 firefighters responded to a building on Guy Lombardo Avenue just after midnight. “This is my heart and soul,” said Suzzanne Serino of Duryea’s Flower Shop. She was overwhelmed with emotion hours after arranging bouquets at her family’s landmark flower shop. It was engulfed in flames. Firefighters from 10 departments tried to save the florist, a restaurant-deli and offices of a dance studio. “I’m praying God that we can still do soemthin for these holidays,” Serino said. Duryea’s has been around since 1930, located on Guy Lombardo Avenue in the heart of Freeport. The Martin family bought it 45 years ago. “Both my aunts and grandmother have given their heart and soul to this place. It’s devastating,” said Kaitlyn Martin. “Horrible. Especially around Thanksgiving, with these folks going through COVID and the impact that has had,” said Raymond Maguire of the Freeport Fire Department. The fire burned at 1,500 degrees and traveled from the florist into the deli. The pressure from the smoke was so intense the windows and doors exploded. Shattering glass from the backdraft blew into the faces of five firefighters who barely escaped serious injury. “Everyone’s safe. That’s all that matters. This can be restored – someone’s life can’t,” said deli owner Carlos Santana. “We’ll come back stronger.” Santana’s family deli served authentic Mexican fare. They are hopeful, but uncertain. “Everything, with COVID going on, makes everything that much more difficult. I wish i had the answer to what comes next,” Kaitlyn Martin said. “My family are full of fighters and our community loves us.” Already the community is embracing the business owners and vowing to help them rebuild. All five victims are expected to be OK. The cause of the fire is under investigation. MORE FROM CBS NEW YORK Stimulus Package Update: What Will A Biden Administration Mean For More Aid? WEST HAVEN, Conn. (CBSNewYork) — At least two people are dead after a steam pipe exploded at a veterans hospital in Connecticut. It happened around 8 a.m. in the basement of a maintenance facility on the hospital’s campus. Investigators say a steam line was being replaced. State emergency management officials are actively working with local and federal officials to respond to the explosion that occurred this morning at the West Haven VA Medical Center and will continue to provide as much aid as necessary to conduct an investigation. (1/3) — Governor Ned Lamont (@GovNedLamont) November 13, 2020 One of the victims was a VA employee, and the other was a contractor. “One of those employees was a Navy veteran,” said Alfred Montoya Jr., director of the VA Connecticut Healthcare System. “Probably one of the hardest moments of my VA career and told his loved one that he was deceased. It was so difficult.” Sen. Richard Blumenthal released the following statement: “It is sad day in America, as we continue to learn more about the incident at the West Haven VA this morning. Our hearts go out to the families of those individuals who have been impacted. As a member of the Veterans’ Affairs Committee, I’ve been in contact with the director of the facility and will continue to remain in touch as more information becomes available. There must be a full and complete investigation as to what was the cause for this fatal, tragic explosion – our veterans deserve the best care, and the safest and most reliable work, always.” Three other people also had minor injuries. The exact cause is still under investigation. NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) — There’s been a big break in the case of three attempted rapes in Queens . Police say the suspect is now in custody, and his stepfather helped catch him. As CBS2’s Andrea Grymes reports, there’s a huge sigh of relief for police and New Yorkers near Forest Park in Queens. (Credit: NYPD Crime Stoppers) Investigators say they’ve got the 20-year-old suspect responsible for three terrifying attacks on two women and a 14-year-old girl, all nearly raped in broad daylight. Police say the quick arrest is thanks in large part to the suspect’s stepdad. “The father taking it upon himself to call the 102 precinct on his stepson really helped us expedite getting this individual off the street sooner than later,” NYPD Chief of Detectives Rodney Harrison. Harrison says the first attack happened around 10 a.m. Thursday morning. A 20-year-old woman was on her way to work at Jamaica Avenue and 104th Street. That’s when the suspect allegedly came from behind, grabbed her buttocks, picked her up and tried to jog with her. The woman screamed and got away. Next, around 12:30 p.m., police say the suspect targeted a 14-year-old girl who was walking while FaceTiming her friend at 84th Avenue and 118th Street. “Our perpetrator came from behind, throwing our victim into the bushes, trying to pick her up and pull down her pants, at which time she screamed and our perpetrator fled off,” Harrison said. The third and final similar attack happened just minutes later, allegedly in the park near Woodhaven Boulevard and Forest Park Drive. That 24-year-old woman also screamed and got away. (Credit: NYPD Crime Stoppers) Thursday night, police released pictures of the suspect from surveillance video they found. Friday morning Harrison says the 102 precinct got a phone call. “Our perpetrator’s stepfather called, saying that he saw his [stepson] on television… that he saw the video that was shared and he threw his stepson out of the house,” Harrison said. Police stepped up patrols near the park, and by 10 a.m. picked him up at Myrtle Avenue and Memorial Drive. Chief Harrison says when cops found him, the suspect was wearing the same shorts and sneakers he was wearing during the attacks. Charges are pending. suspect’s name has not yet been released. ( CBS Baltimore ) — The AFC North remains the most competitive division in football, with three likely playoff contenders and a Cincinnati Bengals team that can beat anyone in a given week. They’ll get their first crack at the undefeated Pittsburgh Steelers this Sunday. The Cleveland Browns welcome back running back Nick Chubb, who should be able to do some damage against a Houston Texans defense that can’t stop anyone. The Baltimore Ravens, meanwhile, will look to work through a few issues on offense against the New England Patriots, who have quite a few issues of their own. Rick Ritter, CBS Baltimore anchor and host of the Ravens’ ‘Purple Pregame’ show, breaks down AFC North matchups for Week 10. All times listed are Eastern. Houston Texans @ Cleveland Browns, Sunday, November 15 @ 1:00 p.m. (FOX) The Texans defense is among the worst in the NFL. And against the run, they are the absolute worst, allowing 159.5 yards per game. According to Ritter, “I don’t think anybody in the NFL, jumping over to the defense real quick, is scared of that Texans D. Going into last week’s game against Jacksonville, they were giving up 31 points per game, which is just hard to believe.” An explosive Browns offense should be able to move the ball at will, especially with Nick Chubb returning from injury. “It seems likely they’re going to be getting Nick Chubb back, which is a huge addition to that offense,” says Ritter. “When Chubb is healthy and Kareem Hunt is healthy, it’s hard to argue that there’s a better running game in the entire league. Those two just go together so well.” > > READ: Fantasy Football Start Or Sit Week 10: ‘Jared Goff Has Top Five Potential’ Against Seahawks The Browns passing game might be a story of addition by subtraction. “We talk about Odell Beckham going out for the season with that injury,” says Ritter. “Baker [Mayfield] actually looked better without Beckham. So can he keep that up if he doesn’t have to worry about forcing somebody the ball? Obviously, there was a little drama there this season, with him demanding the ball.” The Browns defense will have their hands full with Deshaun Watson. “That offense is explosive,” says Ritter. “They can score at the drop of a dime. They had two touchdowns last week, a 55-yarder and a 77-yarder. I don’t think there’s a defense in the league that Brandin Cooks and Will Fuller can’t get behind, when they have the opportunity. So they can put up points.” Myles Garrett and company will look to make Watson’s life difficult, while the Browns offense controls the ball and the clock on the ground. “It will be closer than people think,” says Ritter. “But I think the Browns get this win.” Cincinnati Bengals @ Pittsburgh Steelers, Sunday, November 15 @ 4:25 p.m. (FOX) The Steelers are the NFL’s last remaining undefeated team , and they’ve beaten the Bengals in their last 10 matchups. Some of the Steelers’ wins this season have been close; they only beat the Dallas Cowboys by five points last week. Likewise, some of the Bengals’ losses have been close. Cincinnati also has an extra week of rest, with their bye following a nice win over the Tennessee Titans. Even with all that in mind, “it is hard to bet against the Steelers right now,” says Ritter, “assuming Big Ben and company are fine, with some of them being placed on that COVID list . This is a crazy stat to throw out here. If Ben Roethlisberger keeps up on this pace, he is going to break his single-season touchdown record at 38 years old, which is really just hard to believe. Up there is Pittsburgh, they have three wide receivers out of that organization. JuJu Smith-Schuster seemed to start coming along the last couple of games. He looked great against Dallas. Obviously, Chase Claypool, we know what he can do. And Diontae Johnson. Roethlisberger has a slew of weapons at his disposal.” > > READ: NFL Week 10 NFC North Picks: Dalvin Cook ‘Has Been Tremendous Since His Return,’ Says SportsLine’s Kenny White And the Steelers defense can be dominant, allowing 317.4 yards and 20.1 points per game. They’ve also piled up 32 sacks, best in the league. Bengals rookie QB Joe Burrow has endured his fair share of sacks, but it hasn’t seemed to slow him down. “Don’t sleep on this guy,” says Ritter. “He’s a competitor. He knows how to go out and play.” And he has a few weapons around him, with A.J. Green, Tyler Boyd and Tee Higgins. “I can’t talk enough about Tee Higgins,” says Ritter, “how special this guy looks already, being so young and what he’s going to be. In a couple years, that guy, maybe even sooner, is going to be a top-five receiver in this league. I don’t expect Joe and them to roll over in any way in this game.” The Steelers are favored by 10 points, though the game could be closer. According to Ritter, “you can’t bet against Pittsburgh right now. I think they win this one.” Baltimore Ravens @ New England Patriots, Sunday, November 15 @ 8:20 p.m. (NBC) The Patriots, with their continuing struggles, almost handed the lowly New York Jets their first win. They’ll need to play a whole lot better to keep pace with the Ravens and improve upon their 3-5 record this week. The Ravens have their own issues , which, given their 6-2 record and personnel, are the kind of issues most teams would be happy to have. Baltimore leads the league in rushing, averaging 170.1 yards per game. Their passing game is only slightly more productive, putting up just 176.9 yards per game, among the NFL’s worst. > > READ: Fantasy Football Waiver Wire Week 10: Broncos Rookie KJ Hamler Beginning To Emerge The offensive issues were evident against the Indianapolis Colts defense, admittedly one of the league’s best. “That offense did not look good in the first half,” says Ritter. “[In the] second half, we start to see Lamar Jackson the MVP from last season a little bit. Kind of get into his groove, kind of take the game over.” A lot of the focus falls on the wide receivers and allowing them to make plays. According to Ritter, “there’s so much talk about the Ravens wide receivers and them not winning at the line of scrimmage in terms of those one-on-one-matchups. They have to get Marquise ‘Hollywood’ Brown the ball. There has been a lot of talk here in Baltimore and around the country about finding ways to get this guy the opportunities. And that falls on Greg Roman. He’s only had about 50 yards receiving the last two weeks. This is their number-one receiver. He can take the top off of the defense. He can get behind those safeties. In order for this passing game to get to that next level, they have to get ‘Hollywood’ Brown involved.” The offense has become predictable. “Lamar Jackson said today that defenses are calling out their plays on offense,” Ritter relayed. “Obviously, that’s a big concern, and it falls on the offensive coordinator. They have to switch things up, they have to get going.” Dez Bryant, recently activated from the Ravens’ practice squad, could help change that. Though it’s hard to expect too much from a receiver who hasn’t played since 2017. Despite their offensive issues, the Ravens remain a playoff contender, even as they chase the the Steelers. “They’re going to be okay,” says Ritter. “They’re going to make the playoffs. Lamar can take over a game. They have time to fix this stuff in the backend of the season with a favorable schedule. I have the Ravens winning this game on Sunday night football. ( CBS Local )- Week 10 of the NFL season is here and the time to make a playoff run is dwindling for fantasy football owners. To help you dominate your league this week and inch closer to that playoff spot, the team from Fantasy Football Today is here with your Week 10 starts and sits. Jamey Eisenberg and Adam Aizer run through the best and worst options at quarterback, running back, wide receiver and tight end based on this week’s matchups. Jamey’s start of the week is Los Angeles Rams quarterback Jared Goff going up against the Seattle Seahawks porous pass defense. “They (the Seahawks) allow an average of 29.2 fantasy points per game to opposing quarterbacks. Two of the last three quarterbacks against them have gone for 40 fantasy points,” said Eisenberg. “Jared Goff has top five potential but we’ll just leave him there at number seven, it’s a great week for quarterbacks.” Joining Goff in the starts category for the quarterbacks group this week? The Broncos’ Drew Lock and Eagles’ Carson Wentz. Lock faces a Raiders defense that has also been prone to allowing opposing quarterbacks to flourish while Wentz faces the Giants whom he put up 30 fantasy points against just a few weeks back. On the other hand, Adam has Baker Mayfield, Matthew Stafford and Joe Burrow as the quarterbacks to think about removing from your lineup this week. For Stafford, the big missing piece is wide receiver Kenny Golladay. “He’s boring. And boring is okay in life, I’m pretty boring but in fantasy we want exciting people that are going to have big games. Kenny Golladay doesn’t play, and it’s not looking like he will, Matthew Stafford is just boring,” said Aizer. “And, the Washington Football Team gives up the ninth-fewest fantasy points quarterbacks. This is not as good of a matchup as you might think. I would start Tua, I would start Lock, I would start Carr all over Matthew Stafford.” For the rest of the position group start and sits for the week, check out the video and tune in to the Fantasy Football Today podcast.
