ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) — The Los Angeles Angels publicly praised Mike Trout “for prioritizing his personal values over commercial self-promotion” a day after baseball Commissioner Rob Manfred said the All-Star outfielder would be an even bigger star if he would spend more time marketing himself. The team released a statement Wednesday congratulating Trout on his performance in the All-Star Game in Washington then extolled the time he spends visiting hospitals, schools and charities and the quality time he spends with family. “We applaud him for prioritizing his personal values over commercial self-promotion,” the statement said. “That is rare in today’s society and stands out as much as his extraordinary talent.” A day earlier, Manfred said MLB was interested in having players more engaged and in helping players develop their individual brands. Manfred said Trout chooses not to spend his down time marketing. “Mike’s a great, great player and a really nice person, but he’s made certain decisions about what he wants to do and what he doesn’t want to do, and how he wants to spend his free time and how he doesn’t want to spend his free time,” Manfred said. “That’s up to him. If he wants to engage and be more active in that area, I think we could help him make his brand really, really big. But he has to make a decision that he’s prepared to engage in that area. It takes time and effort.” At 26, Trout is a two-time AL MVP and a seven-time All-Star. He homered off Mets ace Jacob deGrom on Tuesday night in an 8-6 win in 10 innings. Asked after the game about Manfred’s comments, Trout said: “I keep telling you guys, I do as much as I can. But it’s a long baseball season. I got to pick and choose when I want to do things and go from there.” Manfred’s remarks struck a sour note with fans, some of whom took to social media to say Trout was a great role model who should be left to live his life as he pleases. The Angels apparently concur. “His brand is built upon generously spending his time engaging with fans, both at home and on the road, while remaining a remarkable baseball player and teammate,” the team said. Angels Praise Mike Trout For ‘Prioritizing Personal Values’
WASHINGTON (AP) — Major League Baseball said Wednesday that Milwaukee Brewers pitcher Josh Hader will be required to go through sensitivity training after years-old racist and homophobic tweets of his resurfaced during the All-Star Game. MLB announced the commissioner’s office would require Hader to participate in diversity and inclusion initiatives in addition to the sensitivity training. In a statement, Brewers general manager David Stearns said the team will continue to work through the issue with Hader. Several of Hader’s tweets from 2011 and 2012 came to light Tuesday night while Hader was pitching in the All-Star Game. Hader learned of the situation when he left the game. He apologized and took responsibility for the tweets, saying they did not reflect his values or the person he is now. “During last night’s game we became aware of Mr. Hader’s unacceptable social media comments in years past and have since been in communication with the Brewers regarding our shared concerns,” MLB said in a statement. “After the game, Mr. Hader took the necessary step of expressing remorse for his highly offensive and hurtful language, which fails to represent the values of our game and our expectations for all those who are a part of it.” The 24-year-old Hader said he did not “vividly” remember the tweets. “Being 17 years old, you make stupid decisions and mistakes,” Hader said Tuesday night. “I was in high school. We’re still learning who we are in high school. You live and you learn. This mistake won’t happen again.” Stearns said the Brewers were in contact with Hader, who is “fully aware of the severity of the situation related to his social media comments, regardless of the timeline of his posts.” “His comments are inexcusable, and he is taking full responsibility for the consequences of his actions,” Stearns said. “In no way do these sentiments reflect the views of the Brewers organization or our community.” Stearns said those who have come to know Hader believe the sentiments in the tweets do not represent his beliefs, calling him a good teammate and contributor to the Brewers in every way. Hader has a 1.50 ERA in 31 appearances and made the All-Star Game in just his second major league season. Hader spoke with Brewers teammate Lorenzo Cain after the All-Star Game. Cainl, who is black, said he expects the team to accept Hader’s present-day statements and move on. “At the end of the day, you’ve got to give people a second chance,” Cain said. “You’ve got to forgive people. For me, it’s over and done with. He said it. It got out there. I’m moving on from it.” On Twitter Wednesday, Brewers All-Star Jesus Aguilar expressed his support for Hader in a couple of posts. First of all I want to show my support to my friend and teammate, Josh Hader. He made a mistake 7 years ago. He admitted, he apologized and most important: He learned from it. — Jesus Aguilar (@JAguilarMKE) July 18, 2018 Aguilar tweeted. “Regarding accusations of racism: I’m Venezuelan and with the skin color that I have, can tell you that it is a lie. Obviously he’s not racist. He’s a great player and a better person. Great teammate.” Hader, who grew up in Millersville, Maryland, outside the state capital of Annapolis, apologized when he spoke to reporters after the All-Star Game. “There’s no excuse for what was said,” Hader said. “I’m deeply sorry for what I’ve said and what’s been going on.” In the tweets, Hader — who trademarked “Haderade” for what was then his Twitter handle — disparaged blacks and gays, embraced white supremacy, used the N-word multiple times and said several rude things about women over an eight-month period. MLB takes diversity and inclusion very seriously. The game hired former player Billy Bean in 2014 as an Ambassador for Inclusion. Bean came out as gay after he retired from baseball in 1995. T.O. on Hall of Fame plan: Not trying to offend
LOS ANGELES (CBS SPORTS) — The Dodgers have reportedly acquired All-Star infielder and pending free agent Manny Machado from the Orioles in exchange for a package of five prospects. Multiple outlets are reporting the deal as done. Machado had been one of the most coveted names leading up to the non-waiver trade deadline. In addition to the Dodgers, the Phillies, Diamondbacks, and Brewers had been heavily linked to Machado in recent days. In Los Angeles, Machado figures to be the primary shortstop — the position left vacant by Corey Seager’s season-ending Tommy John surgery. That means Chris Taylor would slide over the second base, thus filling what’s been a trouble spot for the Dodgers all season. In the end, the Dodgers in Machado are adding one of the best power hitters in baseball to an offense that already leads the National League in home runs. Machado, who just recently turned 26, is batting .315/.387/.575 (164 OPS+) for the season with 24 home runs in 94 games played. For his career, he owns an OPS+ of 121 across parts of seven major-league seasons. While he’s been a primary third baseman for most of his career, this year he switched back to his original position of shortstop Machado is owed $6.3 million for the remainder of the season, and as mentioned he’s eligible for free agency this coming offseason. Considering the Dodgers have Seager and Justin Turner installed at shortstop and third base, respectively, through at least the 2020 season (when Turner’s contract expires), they’re likely viewing Machado as a temporary fix. Given that Machado seems bent on testing the market, it’s possible he wouldn’t be open to signing an extension even if the Dodgers had such interest. According to multiple reports, the Dodgers will not be receiving any cash in the deal. However, they do remain just under the luxury-tax threshold, which is in keeping with their recent organizational goals. The SportsLine Projection Model was already high on the Dodgers for the rest of the season and has them as the leader in World Series probability in the National League. The forecast gives the Dodgers a bit of a boost, going from 94.1 wins without Machado to 94.6 with the addition of the infielder. Postseason odds go from 94.7 to 96.5 percent with Machado. As far as winning the World Series? The Machado trade raises the Dodgers’ chances from 23.7 to 24 percent. On the Orioles’ side of things, Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic names the five prospects they’ll receive: outfielder Yusniel Diaz (Dodgers No. 4 prospect coming into this season), third baseman Rylan Bannon (Dodgers No. 27 prospect), right-hander Dean Kremer (Dodgers No. 28 prospect), right-hander Zach Pop, and infielder Breyvic Valera. The headliner for Baltimore is Diaz, a 21-year-old product of Cuba who was a consensus top-100 prospect coming into the season. In 2018, he’s put up strong numbers in his first taste of Double-A. He profiles as a strong on-base threat at the highest level. Left to question is whether he’ll hit for power and whether he’ll be able to stick in center field. Bannon, 22 and a former eighth-rounder, has a strong .961 OPS on the season, albeit at hitter-friendly Rancho Cucamonga of the Cal League. He projects as a solid hitter with enough glove to stick at third. Kremer, 22, has solid velocity and life on his fastball, and he also has command of a slider and curve. His changeup could develop into a usable pitch at the highest level. This season, he’s put up strong numbers at Rancho. Pop, a 21-year-old relief prospect, has an ERA of 0.33 and more than a strikeout per inning across two seasons in the low minors. Valera, who’s spent time with the big-league club in 2018, is a 26-year-old switch-hitter who can play second, third, and the outfield corners. He hasn’t produced in limited action at the major-league level, but in the minors he showed good bat-to-ball skills and speed on the bases. — Dayn Perry, CBS Sports Writer
