One person shot video of water shooting out of a manhole in Weehawken approaching the Lincoln Tunnel. Commuters underground also got wet, as subway riders dealt with slippery conditions at several stations across the five boroughs. The torrential rains turned streets into rushing waters all across the Tri-State Area. In Hoboken, waves of rain poured down causing sidewalk and street flooding. Umbrellas were no match for the powerful downpour. Strong winds uprooted a tree in Englewood, sending it slamming into a nearby SUV. Lightning struck a home in Bayonne, causing damage to the front part of the residence. One of the residents said she heard a very loud crash around 3:30 p.m. When she came out to investigate, she saw part of her patio on fire. Luckily, it didn’t spread far. Drivers were preparing for a dicey ride home, as cars were observed getting stuck on the FDR Drive. Northbound lanes were temporarily closed between 62nd and 78th Streets. The city’s subways didn’t fare much better. Customers had to walk through puddles of water at the 14th Street First Avenue stop along the L line. Rainwater collected at the bottom of the stairs, with straphangers opting to ditch their shoes to trudge across. The Metropolitan Transportation Authority said the Times Square Station was also flooded, as well as the Houston Street station along the 1 line. Several buses were also detoured due to flooding.

VIDEO: Father With Young Son Pulls Knife On Another Straphanger On Subway MORE : Rash Of Unprovoked Subway Attacks Has New York Straphangers Spooked Police say it all started with a dispute between two groups of men aboard a southbound 3 train just before 6:30 p.m. The scuffle continued onto the platform at the Sutter Avenue-Rutland Road station in Brownsville, where one of the men brandished a firearm and discharged at least one round. The bullet traveled into the subway, where police say it struck the victim who was heading home from work. He was rushed to Kings County Hospital where he’s currently stable. Tuesday’s shooting was the first in the city’s transit system since 2015, according to police. Earlier in the day, authorities arrested a man they say threatened a straphanger with a knife while he was riding a subway with a small child in Manhattan last month. Just over a week ago, police say a panhandler fractured a commuter’s skull after beating him with a metal object. Investigators describe the shooter as a black male between 16 and 18-years-old last seen wearing a blue shirt and dark sweats. It wasn’t immediately known how many people were involved in the initial scuffle, or if the melee was gang-related. Three people were being questioned at the nearby police precinct but no arrests have been made as the investigation continues. Anyone with information in regards to this incident is asked to call the NYPD’s Crime Stoppers Hotline at 1-800-577-TIPS (8477) or for Spanish, 1-888-57-PISTA (74682). MALVERNE, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) — A couple on Long Island says they’re living a ‘zero waste’ lifestyle. They reuse and recycle almost everything they buy, and take out the trash only three times a year. Composting food waste int heir backyard tumbler is one of the ways Nicole Lentini has reduced her trash output down to nearly zero. To avoid ever throwing out plastic she uses a bamboo toothbrush. Instead of saran wrap, she opts for a cover made from beeswax. “We live in a very disposable society where it’s fast-paced and we use things for a minute that we throw away forever,” Nicole said. She adopted the resourceful lifestyle three years ago with her husband, Matt, after reading about the growing trend online. Amazingly, they haven’t thrown a single bag of garbage out since last February. They started out small, refilling plastic water bottles throughout the day. Eventually they bought reusable produce bags at the store. Instead of buying groceries with packaging they buy in bulk and store the food in reusable glass jars. The zero waste mindset doesn’t stop in the kitchen. Even their toilet reduces waste by diverting the clean water they use to wash their hands into the toilet bowl to flush. The couple’s furniture is second-hand, and they’ve re-purposed old skateboards into shelving units. The thriftiness is not only reducing waste, but also how much they spend. “It changes the way you shop, you look at everything a bit differently,” Matt said. The Department of Sanitation says the average New Yorker throws out more than 1,000 pounds of trash per year, but the Lentinis only use three garbage bags — amounting to less than 30 pounds a year. The couple even brings reusable utensils to work to avoid using disposable ones. Their biggest challenge, they say, is bringing their own Tupperware when they order take-out.

That’s why I couldn’t hold myself when I say, ‘Listen, what you’re doing is not right.’” The victim said he takes the E train every day and he’s worried the suspect will retaliate. “If he pull a knife and threaten your life in front of everybody and holding his child at the same time, he’s a guy (that) doesn’t have anything to lose,” he said. He said he was just trying to do the right thing, but now will never intervene again. Rodriguez was also charged with two counts of endangering the welfare of a child and criminal possession of a weapon.

The future of urban transportation could be in small driverless, self-driving vehicles like small shuttle buses ordered up from an app, reports CBS2’s Scott Rapoport. The shift is the brainchild of Coast Autonomous , a company which came up with the concept and held a demonstration Tuesday in Times Square. “Driverless vehicles, once they get fully deployed, are gonna be a lower coast because you don’t have the expense of a driver,” said Rick Baker, head of urban development for Coast Autonomous. The company says its vehicles are perfect for short distance shuttle trips at airports, college campuses, theme parks and low speed, highly congested areas in New York City. The vehicles are slow moving – only going up to 20 miles an hour – and hold up to 12 people at a time. “We see during peak hours this could run on a fixed route and on off-peak hours, you call it from an app and it goes point-to-point as an on demand service,” said Adrian Sussman, managing director of Coast Autonomous. The company claims it could reduce cars on the street and ease gridlock, but the city’s Department of Transportation says it has not had any official contact with Coast Autonomous. Without a driver, the vehicle is equipped with sensors which the company says uses radar to detect the presence of pedestrians in crosswalks and traffic around it. “When it sees an obstruction on the road it sends a signal for the vehicle to stop,” said Baker. The company insists its vehicles are safe though clearly in the concept stage. After testing them in seven countries, they hope to bring the vehicles to the U.S. next year.
