SAN ANTONIO (CBSLA/AP) – Kawhi Leonard likely won’t be joining LeBron James and the Los Angeles Lakers this season. Kawhi Leonard of the San Antonio Spurs looks on during the game against the Denver Nuggets on Jan. 13, 2018, at the AT&T Center in San Antonio. (Getty Images) Two people familiar with the situation say San Antonio and Toronto have reached an agreement in principle on a trade that will send Kawhi Leonard to the Raptors and DeMar DeRozan to the Spurs. One of the people says the Spurs also are sending Danny Green to the Raptors as part of the deal. Both people spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity Wednesday because the deal has not been finalized. ESPN, which first reported that the agreement was struck, also said that the Raptors are sending Jakob Poeltl and a protected future first-round draft pick to San Antonio. The trade is a very risky play by Raptors general manager Masai Ujiri given that Leonard could become just an expensive one-season rental. Leonard has made clear to the Spurs several weeks ago that he wanted to be traded, and it’s long been believed that he wants to sign with the Los Angeles Lakers when he can be a free agent in 2019. The Lakers have made it clear that they want to pair the newly-signed James with at least one other superstar in order to make a run at the Golden State Warriors. Leonard was born and raised in the Southland and attended Canyon Springs High School in Moreno Valley and Martin Luther King High School in Riverside. He played two seasons for San Diego State before being taken No. 15 overall by the Indiana Pacers in the 2011 draft. However, he was immediately traded to San Antonio. Leonard resides in San Diego County in the off-season. DeRozan has led the Raptors in scoring in each of the last five seasons. (© Copyright 2018 CBS Broadcasting Inc. All Rights Reserved. SAN BERNARDINO (CBSLA/AP) — California health officials say an infant has died from whooping cough — the first such infant death in the state since 2016. The Department of Public Health said Tuesday that the baby was from San Bernardino County but didn’t provide any other details. Two infants died of the disease in 2016. Whooping cough, also known as pertussis, is a highly contagious respiratory ailment that can spread through coughing. Dr. Karen Smith, director of the state health department, says the latest death is especially tragic because the disease is preventable. “This serves as a grim reminder that whooping cough is always present in our communities, and immunizations are the first line of defense,” she said in a statement. Health officials urge expectant mothers to get a whooping cough booster shot. Parents are urged to immunize babies as soon as possible. The symptoms of whooping cough vary by age. Young infants may not have typical whooping cough symptoms and no apparent cough, while older children may start out with a runny nose and cough for up to two weeks that can worsen in rapid coughing spells that end with a whooping sounds. NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) — An MTA worker is recovering from a gunshot wound after being hit by a stray bullet in the subway in Brooklyn. The scene unfolded around 6 p.m. Tuesday on a crowded 3 train at the Sutter Avenue station in Brownsville. Witnesses said it began when two groups of men in their 20s stated fighting on the subway. As the train pulled into the station, investigators say one of the men got off and pulled out a weapon. “I just heard a loud shot,” said witness Kiosha Kirkland. “Then I see everyone running.” “While on the train platform, displayed a gun and fired into the train striking our victim,” said Brooklyn North Chief Michael Kemper. The victim, believed to be an unintended target, was an off-duty MTA worker who had just finished his shift and was heading home. He was struck in the arm. The gunfire sent scared straphangers scrambling, CBS2’s Janelle Burrell reported. “Just everyone else from the train running, trying to cover for safety,” said Kirkland. NYPD Transit Chief Edward Delatorre says the subway averages about six million riders and about six crimes per day. “In reality, the system is very safe,” he said. “Safer than it’s ever been.” But after a rash of subway attacks in the last couple of weeks alone, CBS2 asked the transit chief how he could reassure concerned riders. “Those incidents are few and far between,” he said. “When you have six million riders a day riding in the system, you’re gonna have random incidents as well.” New York City Transit President Andy Byford said he was “appalled” by the shooting. He and MTA Chairman Joe Lhota visited the employee in the hospital Tuesday night and said he is in good spirits. Lhota added that transit workers “are on the front lines” every day and said “this shouldn’t happen to anyone.”
