NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) – Police say they finally caught up with a man wanted in connection with the death of a nurse in Queens, discovering the suspect on the other side of the country with another woman held captive in a Los Angeles hotel room. Danueal Drayton, 27, of New Haven, Conn., was taken into custody Thursday. The hunt began after 29-year-old nurse Samantha Stewart was found dead inside her bedroom at her family home in Springfield Gardens, Queens, on July 17. Police say Stewart suffered trauma to her head and neck. “A lot of sorrow is in my heart,” her aunt, Ruby Dixon, told CBS2’s Tony Aiello after learning about Drayton’s arrest. “My niece was the best you ever could find in a human being.” (credit: NYPD) Police had been searching for the person responsible for Stewart’s murder and also another incident involving the rape of a 23-year-old woman that happened the month before in Gowanus, Brooklyn. Both investigations led them to the same suspect, when the joint New York/New Jersey Police Task Force caught up with Drayton. “There was a separate woman in a hotel room in California that was being held against her will,” said NYPD Chief of Detectives Dermot Shea. “Right after he commit a gruesome murder here and destroy my family, he went to California and just almost did the same thing,” Stewart’s father, Kenneth, said. “Thank God they catch him before he could destroy another family.” When we captured Danuel Drayton in LA for the murder of Queens nurse Samantha Stewart, he had another victim held captive. He's off the streets but may have victimized others via online dating sites. Need help or have info? Call 800-577-TIPS/ sex crimes hotline 212-267-RAPE pic.twitter.com/iif7E9KuyA — Chief Dermot F. Shea (@NYPDDetectives) July 26, 2018 Authorities believe Drayton met both of those women on Tinder and their first meeting was in a public space. They say he also may have used other dating sites to meet potential victims. “The common denominator in these two cases – one being a murder, one being a rape – is dating websites,” said Shea. “So this individual is known to us and it is believed by us that this individual uses dating web sites to meet women and then victimize these women.” Police say Drayton was well known to police. He was arrested in June for allegedly choking an ex-girlfriend at Inwood Park in Nassau County. One July 1, his bail was set at $1,000. On July 5, a judge dropped the bail requirement, over the objection of the district attorney, and Drayton walked free. He also has five prior arrests in his home state of Connecticut, including a strangulation arrest in 2011. “I’m devastated by my loss of my daughter, but hearing this news now it really, really shocks me, throws me over the edge,” said Kenneth Stewart. Police believe there may be more victims out there and are asking for anyone affected or who has information to come forward. “Be careful. If you meet up with someone, tell somebody,” Dixon said. “Tell a family member, tell a friend. You don’t know who these monsters are.” Stewart’s funeral is set for Saturday.

IRVINE (CBSLA/AP) – Training camp for the Los Angeles Rams will enter its second day Friday at the University of California, Irvine, as the team faces high expectations following its surprising success last season, when it won its first NFC West title since 2003. Corner back (21) Aqib Talib takes questions from the media during the Los Angeles Rams Training Camp on July 26, 2018 at UC Irvine in Irvine, CA. (Photo by Chris Williams/Icon Sportswire via Getty Images) Last week, the Rams signed marquee running back Todd Gurley to a four-year, $60 million extension , the richest for a running back in NFL history on a per-season basis. A few days prior, the Rams gave newly-acquired wide receiver Brandin Cooks a whopping $80 million, five-year deal . The Complete Rams Training Camp Schedule The signings were somewhat puzzling given the noticeable absence from training camp of arguably the team’s best player, All-Pro defensive tackle Aaron Donald. Donald, the NFL’s defensive player of the year, and the Rams have been working on a long-term extension since early last year. Donald skipped all of training camp last year in a holdout, and he missed all of the Rams’ offseason activities this spring. He did not report to the first day of camp Thursday. Donald is under contract for this season for nearly $6.9 million in the fifth year of his rookie contract. According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the belief around the league is that Donald will not play another down on his current contract. Defensive tackle (93) Ndamukong Suh signs autographs for the fans during the Los Angeles Rams Training Camp on July 26, 2018 at UC Irvine in Irvine, CA. (Photo by Chris Williams/Icon Sportswire via Getty Images) Coach Sean McVay says talks with Donald haven’t advanced since earlier this week, when Donald was still at home in Pittsburgh. Donald, the No. 13 overall pick in the 2013 draft, has made the Pro Bowl every season of his career. He has been named a first team All-Pro in the past last three seasons. H has had 39 sacks across his first four seasons, first in the league among defensive tackles, according to CBS Sports . “We’re simultaneously working to make Aaron a Ram a long time,” Rams General Manager Les Snead said last week. “That’s the goal. Aaron is a big part of who we are, where we want to go, but the details and all that, we’re going to continue the course of keeping them in-house.” Adding to Donald’s frustration could be the summer signing of defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh to a one-year, $14 million deal . While a solid player, Suh is not anywhere near the caliber of Donald, but will be making more than double Donald’s salary. (Photo by Chris Williams/Icon Sportswire via Getty Images) Each day of training camp, which runs through Aug. 16, will be open to the public except for today, which is reserved for Rams season ticket holders. All but one of the practices open to the general public will begin at 3 p.m. The exception is the final one, Aug. 16, which will begin at 9:45 a.m. The other open practices will be conducted July 29-30, Aug. 1-2, 4, 11-13 and Aug. 15. To attend any practice held on a Saturday or Sunday, fans must sign up in advance for their free ticket, which will be used to redeem the giveaway. The tickets are available at therams.com/freetickets. Parking will be available in the Mesa Parking Structure, next to the Bren Events Center. Fans are encouraged to purchase parking passes in advance for the discounted rate of $10 here . Parking purchased in-person on the day of practice is $15. The training camp includes an expanded fan activation area, which will open two hours prior to every practice. The area will include a DJ, face painting, interactive photo experience, enter-to-win opportunities and a virtual reality gaming tent. Fans will have the opportunity to form a Fan Tunnel when the players take the field for practice. Each practice, 20 fans along with a guest of their choosing will be selected to form the tunnel. Fans must register in advance for the chance to take part in the Fan Tunnel here . The fans selected will be notified by the Rams 48 hours in advance of their respective date. Fans may bring the following items to practice — hats, jackets, rain gear, sunglasses, sunscreen, binoculars, umbrellas, and strollers. The following items will not be permitted at training camp — outside alcohol, outside food and beverage, coolers, glass containers, noise makers, loud radios, large signs or inappropriate attire. Pets are not allowed, although service animals are permitted. No weapons of any kind, regardless of persons with concealed carry handgun permits, will be allowed. Fans may bring cameras. Flash photography is not allowed. Video cameras are prohibited. UC Irvine is a smoke- and tobacco-free campus. (© Copyright 2018 CBS Broadcasting Inc. All Rights Reserved. Rams Training Camp Kicks Off In Irvine; Aaron Donald A No-Show
By Norm Elrod Ronda Rousey is taking WWE by storm, but that’s generally her approach to things. Once the world’s most dominant female fighter, taking down opponent after opponent via armbar within seconds, she’s widely credited with establishing and elevating women’s mixed martial arts. But her accomplishments also include a bronze medal in Judo at the Olympics and now a burgeoning career with the WWE. Never mind that she’s one of the more recognizable athletes on the planet. Here are 18 things you probably didn’t know about the ex-UFC champion and current wrestling star Ronda Rousey: Ronda Rousey (Photo Credit: Frederic J. Brown/AFP/Getty Images) 1. Rousey was born in Riverside, California, in February of 1987, the third daughter of AnnMarie De Mars and Ron Rousey. She almost died at birth from lack of oxygen, caused by the umbilical cord wrapped around her neck. The mild brain damage she suffered prevented her from speaking actual words until the age of six. 2. Rousey’s mother, AnnMaria De Mars , won a gold medal in the 56kg weight class at the World Judo Championships in 1984, the first American to do so. Her father, Ron Rousey, was a soldier. He committed suicide in 1995 after learning that a sledding accident that broke his back would eventually leave him a quadriplegic. 3. Growing up, Rousey split time between Southern California and Jamestown, North Dakota. She struggled in school and was homeschooled for parts of her education. Her mother pushed her to take up judo as a way to deal with her frustrations. Rousey eventually dropped out of high school to focus on her training, later earning her GED. 4. Rousey holds a 4th degree black belt in Judo. She began learning Judo from her mother at age 11. At 17, she qualified for the 2004 Athens Olympics, becoming the youngest judoka in that year’s games. Rousey didn’t medal in Athens , but she did take gold in that year’s World Junior Judo Championships and Pan American Judo Championship. 5. At the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing, Rousey became the first America woman to medal in judo . (Judo became a women’s Olympic sport in 1992.) Competing in the 70kg division, she won five matches , with one loss, including the bronze-medal finals over Germany’s Annett Boehm. Ronda Rousey (Photo Credit: Olivier Morin/AFP/Getty Images) 6. After the Olympics, Rousey cast about for direction in her life, sharing in apartment in Venice Beach, California, and working multiple jobs as a bartender and cocktail waitress. She and her dog also lived out of her 2005 Honda Accord for a time. 7. Rousey has been a pro wrestling fan for most of her life. And a lot of the promotion techniques she ended up using in her MMA career were borrowed from there. Early in her amateur career, before her first fight, she met the wrestling legend ‘Rowdy’ Roddy Piper and asked him if she could borrow his nickname. He agreed, brushing it off like a minor detail, but that exchange launched the resurgence of the nickname. 8. Rousey is a gamer, and her favorite games , at different times, have included Dragon Ball Z , Just Dance , Mario Kart and World of Warcraft . She also love Pokemon, her favorite character being Mew. 9. She made her amateur MMA debut in August of 2010 at an event in Oxnard, California. Rousey submitted her opponent, Hayden Munoz, with an armbar in 23 seconds. She submitted her next two opponents, Autumn Richardson and Taylor Stratford, in 57 and 24 seconds respectively. 10. Rousey debuted in professional mixed martial arts in March of 2011, defeating Ediane Gomes in 25 seconds. Two days before the fight, she broke up a dog fight between her mastiff and a pit bull and sustained cuts to her foot that required stitches. Fighting with stitches is not allowed under athletic commission rules. So the budding fighter created a brouhaha by insisting at the last minute on weighing in naked. The resulting confusion distracted officials from her injury. 11. While training and fighting, Rousey also worked at CARE (California Animal Rehabilitation), doing physical therapy for dogs. That included acupuncture, underwater treadmill, ultrasound and other techniques. 12. Her Strikeforce debut came in August of 2011 against Sarah D’Alelio, whom she submitted via armbar 25 seconds into the match. She went on to win the women’s bantamweight title, defeating Miesha Tate, again in the first round with an armbar. Ronda Rousey (Photo Credit: Matthew Stockman/Getty Images) 13. Rousey signed with Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) in November 2012, becoming the promotion’s first female fighter ever. ( UFC had purchased Strikeforce the previous year and let it continue to operate as a separate entity.) Soon after, UFC president, Dana White, named her the champion of the 135-pound class. 14. Her first UFC fight — and UFC’s first-ever women’s fight — happened three months later against Liz Carmouche, an ex-Marine. Rousey won again, in typical fashion, with an armbar, through the match lasted most of the first round. 15. After multiple title defenses, none lasting more than 1:06, she lost her first match. In November of 2015, Holly Holm defeated Rousey in the second round by knockout. A year later, Rousey lost her comeback match to defending champion Amanda Nunes in under a minute. 16. Rousey is married to UFC fighter Travis Browne . The couple wed in August of 2017 at an outdoor ceremony in Hawaii, the state where he was born. The two had been dating for two years prior. 17. Rousey made her WWE debut early in April of 2018, teaming up with Kurt Angle to beat Stephanie McMahon and Triple H at WrestleMania 34. She had previously appeared at Royal Rumble earlier in the year, indicating that a WrestleMania appearance might be in the offing. Rousey signed her contract (in storyline) a month later at Elimination Chamber. 18. In early July of 2018, Rousey was inducted into the UFC Hall of Fame , the first woman to receive the honor. Her acceptance speech focused on acknowledging the fans and the state of the sport that she helped establish.

KOREATOWN (CBSLA) — Police are looking for information that might lead to the capture of the persons who mugged a woman in Koreatown parking lot before dragging her several feet. Judy Cho was with her mother picking up food for a family member’s birthday party at Rodeo Galleria Sunday afternoon when she was attacked and her purse was taken by a man who quickly jumped into a getaway car. “All of a sudden, somebody pulled me from the back, and the next thing I know, I’m on the ground, there’s a car, I’m dragged,” said Cho, who had scrapes and bruises on her arm, back and feet. Security video shows Cho getting dragged by her arm for a short distance before she stops. Her 66-year-old mother tried to assist, suffering a fractured rib in the process. Cho’s husband told CBS2 News that, aside from the video, security at the shopping center was of little help, adding they thought the car was suspicious before the incident. “I felt [they were] not doing the job in full capacity, in [that] they’re more like a parking attendant than a security guard,” said Ken Cho. Police said a 69-year-old woman had her purse stolen not far from there about 15 minutes later. The thief is described as a man in his 20s or 30s. The driver is described as a man or woman of similar age. The vehicle was as a blue or gray, late model Honda Civic with paper license plates.

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) – A 401(k) is the last thing on many young people’s minds. A record number of millennials are quitting their jobs, because they don’t want to be tied down. “It was just that work, commute, hangout with friends, and just do that on repeat,” Sarah Solomon told CBS2’s Jessica Moore. Solomon was living a young professional’s dream until at the age of 25, she decided she was burned out. Her company’s vacation policy was cramping her millennial style. “I didn’t want to have to wait a year before I could take five days at a time going on vacation,” she said. So, she ditched her PR career and its six-figure salary for the life of a digital nomad, representing a few clients remotely as she travels the world, pinching pennies to make ends meet. “I can work and still travel and see the world. And that was really — and then once I got that in my head, I was like, I have to make this happen,” said Solomon. Psychotherapist Jennifer Abcug sees many millennials redefining the traditional trajectory of success. “I think the mindset with some of the millennials is: Why wouldn’t I do this? Because I don’t know what’s going to happen tomorrow,” she said. But not all millennials are buying into the idea. “I think that sounds amazing, but I definitely want a good career and I want to be successful, and that’s not something that interests me,” said Midtown resident Abby Cantor. Frances Franz, of the Upper West Side, said she believes vacation is the reward for hard work, not the other way around. “No, not in a thousand years. I needed to have income. I wanted to be independent,” she said. But Solomon said she can have it both ways and refuses to live with regrets. “I think I’m going to look back and be so proud and happy that I did this, so that’s worth it for me,” she said. A recent survey of more than 10,000 millennials showed 43 percent plan to quit their jobs within two years. Experts say the trend is actually creating a big problem in the hot job market, with myriad job opportunities and not enough qualified candidates willing to work.

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) – Neighborhood policing gets officers out of patrol cars and onto the sidewalks. Now, it’s getting a transit twist. The NYPD Transit Bureau is adding 100 newly hired officers. As CBS2’s Dave Carlin reports, they will report daily to subway stations and apply neighborhood policing practices, growing bonds between law enforcement and the public and looking out for crime. “They’re responsible for the quality of life conditions, they’re responsible for the turnstile jumpers,” said NYPD Transit Bureau Chief Edward Delatorre. The officers are being added to four transit districts – District 3 in Manhattan and the Bronx, District 4 in Manhattan, District 32 in Brooklyn and District 20 in Queens. Two other districts got neighborhood policing back in April. “We now have half of our 12 transit districts up and running with neighborhood coordination officers,” NYPD Commissioner James O’Neill said. The NYPD says the number of officers added to patrol subway stations and platforms will continue to rise. “We intend to and will roll out the rest of the districts in early 2019,” said Delatorre. Some straphangers say even though the same officers will report to the same subway stations day after day, earning people’s trust could still be a challenge that takes time. “For police to get to know the community and for the community to get to know them is a good idea,” Megan McLaughlin, of Sugar Hill, said. “They cannot do their job as well as they should under the circumstance that there’s so much mistrust,” said John Rosenthal, of Inwood. The NYPD says when neighborhood policing is fully rolled out in the subways, it will mean a 15 percent increase in staffing for transit enforcement.

NYPD Expands Neighborhood Policing With More Officers Patrolling Subways
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) — When you think of beekeeping, a city skyscraper might not be where you would think to look. Andrew Cote is the president of the New York Beekeepers Association. He personally has more than 40 beehives. In all, the Manhattan skyline is host to more than 300 rooftop apiaries. One might find it unnerving to be surrounded by colonies of bees, but Cote says the bees aren’t the biggest risk. Cote : “The biggest problem with rooftop beekeeping is not falling off the roof.” Overmyer : “It’s not being stung, it’s the fact that you’re 15 stories off the ground?” Cote : “You could be stung hundreds times and survive. You fall off this once, and your daughter’s gonna miss ya.” Prior to 2010, honey bees were considered dangerous animals, like pythons and tarantulas. Harboring them was even once unlawful in New York City. “There’s really no danger in beekeeping at all. There’s a perception of danger, but it’s not real. Honey bees are not interested in us,” Cote said. “They’re docile, they’re friendly, they’re hard working, they’re like most New Yorkers. They just want to go about their day, get their things done, take care of their own business and return to their own homes.” Bees play an essential role in vegetation growth. Seventy of the top 100 crops require pollination by bees. Cote says one third to one half of the food we eat is thanks to the pollination of the honey bee. “They’re the most important pollinator, in my opinion,” he said. Worldwide, colonies are dying left and right. Yet in New York, they’re thriving. “The big reason why the urban beekeepers, like we here in New York City, don’t have a problem with colony collapse disorder or mass die off of honey bees is because we don’t have that pesticide sprays that the big farms suffer,” Cote said. The search radius for a bee is three miles. That means flowers in Central Park are being pollinated by bees in Union Square. Every few weeks, it’s time to harvest. Cote : “The smoke calms them down. The smoke distracts them.” Overmyer : “What are you looking for when you look at these honeycombs?” Cote : “I’m looking for a nice white capped honey.” Overmyer : “That’s ready to harvest?” Cote : “That’s gonna get harvested in about 2 seconds (tastes) caramelized sunshine!” Overmyer : “I notice you have to almost be careful putting it back in so you’re not squishing any of them too.” Cote : “Yeah you want to be careful not to crush them, not only so as not to hurt one, but it will emit a scent to let the others know there’s a problem.” For six months, these bees will produce and store up more than enough nectar to get them through the winter. Cote only takes the surplus, while leaving the rest for the bees. Vertical hives provide a use of space that’s most efficient. This hive alone has more than 100,000 honey bees. A vast majority are the worker bees, which are female. Cote : “She’s got four wings, six legs, five eyes. Her entire body is covered in hair, including her eyes.” Overmyer : “She sounds like a monster, but to you it’s beautiful.” Cote : “It is beautiful. Beekeeping is personally rewarding for me. And it’s a good thing, because the other rewards of beekeeping are stings and poverty. I think it would be nice if people were aware that this is happening—that these angels are in the skies over their heads working tirelessly and selflessly to make honey for us.”

This place is tucked away in Silver Lake. … The food itself was pretty good! They’re all made with fresh ingredients. Being a vegan place, Jewel does get quite creative with how it makes its food.” “Figuring you usually don’t go wrong by ordering the namesake dish, I ordered the Jewel Box and was served one of the best lunches of my life,” shared Yelper Lisa N. “Sweet, savory, bitter, tangy, grounded and still a little edgy.” Jewel is open from 8 a.m.–4:30 p.m. on weekdays and 9 a.m.–4:30 p.m. on weekends.
