NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) — Twelve more buildings that were evacuated following last week’s steam pipe explosion in the Flatiron District are expected to reopen Tuesday. It’s been five days since the explosion shook the area of Fifth Avenue and 21st Street , shutting down streets and forcing people out of their apartments and businesses. “We really have no indication how long it will be before we can fully return and actually live in our homes again,” said displaced resident David Bass. Thursday’s blast sent asbestos-filled steam into the air, which has been the overriding concern in the area. Officials said air samples have tested negative and about half of the roughly 45 affected buildings have now been given the all clear following testing. But officials say a dozen buildings have tested positive inside for asbestos contamination. “We are constantly testing the air outside,” said NYC OEM Commissioner Joseph Esposito. “Before we let people re-enter the building, we are testing the air inside in all common areas of the building.” There was a tense meeting Monday night as city and Con Edison officials answered a firestorm of questions from those impacted. About 400 businesses have been affected. “My people, they all want to come back to work and live life normal again,” said store manager Danielle Storno. “As a restaurant, people are not going to come if the whole area is blockaded and looks like a war zone,” said restaurant owner Renee Typaldos. Bus traffic was allowed on Fifth Avenue Monday, but it’s unclear when the area will be back to business as usual. Con Ed says it is giving $500 to everyone displaced and those who need to file claims for things such as hotels can do that. The city is also providing live updates as buildings are cleared for reoccupation through information on the city’s website

By Giorgio Panetta CBS2 Chief Meteorologist/Weather Producer The rain is here to stay and won’t break for a while. The low pressure system to the south and the high pressure off-shore is churning up strong southerly winds. This is causing heavy bouts of moisture to be pumped into the area. These are slow moving systems, which is why this pattern will continue on for the rest of the week. Humidity will also continue to rise so it’s going to be a very sticky week as well. CBS2 Temperatures didn’t drop much from yesterday. We started out the day in the mid 70s! They will rise by this afternoon to the low 80s. Most of the heavy rain will come tomorrow but there may be a few isolated showers and thunderstorms. These will occur mostly north and west of the city. Make sure to keep an umbrella handy this week!

Abreu Homers To Back Giolito As White Sox Beat Angels 5-3
FONTANA (CBSLA) — Jesse Camp, who made a name for himself in the 90s as an MTV VJ, was missing Monday night. As CBSLA’s Tina Patel reports, Camp’s family is now using social media to try and spread the word and bring him home. Camp rose to fame in the 1990s, winning a contest to become an MTV VJ. Not only did he get to interview some of the biggest stars of the time, he also got to put out his own music and videos. He wasn’t seen as much publicly in recent years, but he still kept in close contact with friends and family around the country until earlier this month. They reached out to police and filed a missing persons report last week. “His kind of routine, almost nightly contact with some family members ceased about a week prior,” said Riverside Police Officer Ryan Railsback. “So they were starting to get worried.” According to police, Camp had some minor run-ins with the law in the Inland Empire over the past couple years. Just last Thursday, before the missing persons report was filed, an officer with Fontana Police contacted him behind a shopping center in an area frequented by homeless people. “That’s the impression he had, that maybe Mr. Camp was possibly living out of a car and on the streets,” said Railsback. Monica Garcia works as a security guard in the area. She didn’t recognize Camp’s photo, but hates to think someone who once had it all might be in trouble now. “It’s sad to see and to hear,” said Garcia. Garcia says substance abuse is an issue for many in the area. “Honestly I think when the drugs are there. So they can’t get nothing, they fell behind,” said Garcia. Police don’t know if Camp might be fighting addiction, but they hope they can find him to see if he needs help. “It’s not against the law to not talk to your family. So if he doesn’t want to, that’s OK,” said Railsback. “We just want to get word to his family that he’s doing OK.”

STUDIO CITY (CBSLA) — Two high-ranking education administrators who said they were fired for exposing corruption in their Southland school district have been awarded over $3 million in their lawsuit against the agency. Former superintendent of the Montebello Unified School District Susanna Contreras Smith was awarded $2.7 million in damages for what she claimed was a retaliatory termination for calling out “crony” contracts. Former chief financial and operations officer Cleve Pell received $567,665. According to their lawsuit, the two were fired for calling out former education board member and Chief Business Officer Ruben J. Rojas for misconduct. The lawsuit alleged Rojas, who was in charge of MUSD’s $300 million budgets, “was directing lucrative MUSD contracts to cronies in violation of public contracting laws.” The lawsuit claimed Rojas awarded those contracts to companies he favored at a time when the district was upgrading facilities. He no longer works for the district. A judge found two other administrators acted with malice, oppression and fraud against Smith and Pell. Board members Lani Chupchoy and Benjamin Cardenas were each ordered to pay $1 in punitive damages to each of the whistleblowers. For its part, MUSD maintains it fired Smith and Pell legally and said it might appeal the jury’s decision. This decision comes the same day that former Los Angeles Unified School District Board Member Ref Rodriguez pleaded guilty to a felony for reimbursing donors to his 2015 board campaign. ANAHEIM (CBSLA) — Disneyland Resort and the union representing theme park workers announced today they have reached a tentative contract agreement, following weeks of protests by park employees who claimed that some of them were earning poverty level wages. Terms of the proposed labor deal between the park and the Master Services Council — which includes four labor unions that collectively represent about 9,500 workers at Disneyland Park, Disney California Adventure Park and Downtown Disney — were not disclosed. “The Disneyland Resort and Master Services Council are proud to have reached a tentative agreement, which we are hopeful will be ratified later this week,” according to a joint statement issued Monday. “We have had a successful history of working together since Disneyland Park opened in 1955, and this contract continues that shared commitment to cast members.” “I am so proud of all of the members of my union, SEIU United Service Workers West, and the Master Services Council, for all of their hard work in this effort. Disney workers have been hiding in shame for too long, and it took us coming forward and taking and stand to make a real change,” said bargaining committee member Artemis Bell. LONDON (CBS News) — It’s not a sight you would expect to see on the streets of London, but few are more blown away by the jet suit than the man who invented it, Richard Browning . “There’s that moment where you’re off the ground, and suddenly it’s quite liberating,” he said. “It’s almost like that dream most people seem to have around being able to just think somewhere and fly there.” A military man who served with the Royal Marines, 39-year-old Browning quit his day job as an oil trader to focus full time on taking flight. The suit can reach speeds of 32 mph, and an altitude of 12,000 feet. It’s made up of five mini jet engines — one on the back and two on each arm — that control direction. “In a strange way, it’s a bit like riding a bike,” Browning said. He swears he didn’t set out to copy the suit made famous in “Iron Man,” but he admits there were some “wonderful parallels.” “Actually what the guys had done, to think up that character and then do all the CGI around it, was actually quite accurate,” he said. A real life “Iron Man” suit is now available for sale for $450,000. (SOURCE: CBS News) The dream of building a jet suit is nothing new, but never has it been so real. You can now buy one, if you’ve got a spare $450,000 rattling around in your pocket. The suit is even on display at the Selfridges department store, alongside a virtual reality version showing how it works. At the moment, it’s just for fun. But Browning says he foresees some practical uses in the future. “For niche military applications and niche search and rescue applications — it turns out we do have some capability that they didn’t think was possible,” Browning said. For now, the fuel pack limits the suit to only three or four minutes of flight. But as the engines become more efficient, the only direction this jet suit is headed is up.
