HOUSTON, Texas (CBS Local) – A new study is giving cheese lovers a reason to celebrate. Researchers say eating dairy products won’t increase your risk of developing heart problems later on in life. According to research published in The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition , saturated fat found in milk and cheese did not contribute to cardiovascular disease in a large group of seniors examined for two decades. The 22-year study followed more than 2,900 people over the age of 65. Researchers found that patients with higher levels of fatty acids in their blood had a 42-percent lower risk of dying from a stroke. “Our findings not only support, but also significantly strengthen, the growing body of evidence which suggests that dairy fat, contrary to popular belief, does not increase risk of heart disease or overall mortality in older adults,” lead author Marcia Otto of UTHealth School Public Health said, via The Independent . “Consumers have been exposed to so much different and conflicting information about diet, particularly in relation to fats.” Another study in 2017 also pointed to cheese being a positive for your diet. Those findings, in the European Journal of Nutrition, concluded that people who ate large amounts of cheese could lower their risk for heart disease by up to 14 percent.

WASHINGTON (AP) – Ivanka Trump is shutting down her clothing company and laying off 18 employees after some stores dropped her line and she decided ethics restrictions were holding back its ability to grow. The president’s daughter said in statement she made the decision to focus more on work as a White House adviser. “After 17 months in Washington, I do not know when or if I will ever return to the business, but I do know that my focus for the foreseeable future will be the work I am doing here in Washington,” she said, “so making this decision now is the only fair outcome for my team and partners.” Ivanka Trump has recently been encouraging U.S. companies to pledge to hire American workers. Her company has been criticized for using Chinese workers abroad to make its products. Opinions about the brand have become highly polarized and it has faced boycotts from anti-Trump protesters. With sales flagging by some measures, Nordstrom dropped the Ivanka Trump line last year and recently Hudson Bay reportedly did the same. The company has also come under criticism from ethics experts for trademarks granted by foreign governments such as China that would want to curry favor with the president. Analyst Neil Saunders, managing director of GlobalData Retail, said that “while the company is still viable, doing business has become far more challenging and these problems will only increase.” The bulk of Ivanka Trump’s assets —more than $50 million worth — was contained in a trust that holds her business and corporations. That trust generated over $5 million in revenue last year, according to a financial disclosure report filed with the government. When Ivanka Trump joined the White House as adviser to her father, she stepped aside from running her company and agreed to several restrictions so that her financial interest in the business would not conflict with her public role as a White House adviser. Still, the company drew criticism for benefiting from their White House ties. In April last year, the Chinese government granted her company provisional approval for three new trademarks, the same day she and her husband Jared Kushner dined with the president of China and his wife at President Trump’s Mar-a-Lago resort. Ivanka Trump’s brand has said the 2017 Chinese trademarks were filed defensively to protect against squatters using her name. China has said its trademarks policy regarding Ivanka Trump’s company is in line with normal legal practice. The Ivanka Trump brand has also come under criticism for conditions at factories where its products were made in China. The Associated Press spoke with workers last year at an Ivanka Trump shoe factory in Ganzhou, China, who described long hours, low pay and abuse. The company said at the time that the “integrity” of its supply chain was a “top priority” and that it takes such allegations “very seriously.” (© Copyright 2018 The Associated Press. LIBERIA (CBS Local) – Doctors have made a disturbing discovery about 2014’s deadly Ebola outbreak in Africa. A woman who survived the virus is believed to have spread it one year after her initial infection. The study, published on July 23 in the journal Lancet Infectious Diseases , reports that a 33-year-old Liberian woman infected her husband and two sons a year after the epidemic swept across West Africa. Unfortunately, the mother’s 15-year-old died, while her husband and younger son survived their infections. “The Ebola virus hides in places where it can escape the antibodies from a body’s immune system, so there is a need for vigilance,” Dr. David Heymann of the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine said, via CBS News . Doctors say the woman’s pregnancy after the infection may have caused the deadly infection to resurface. “The suspicious illness she had following delivery may have been a re-activation of Ebola, but we have no confirmatory tests,” the study’s lead author Dr. Emily Kainne Dokubo of the CDC explained. Health officials have seen previous incidents where men have spread Ebola to women through sex. The virus can reportedly survive in semen for more than a year, but the Liberian woman’s case is the first time scientists have linked the spread of Ebola to a woman after such a long period of inactivity. More than 11,000 people died across Guinea, Liberia, and Sierra Leone from 2014 to 2015. It was the largest Ebola epidemic on record.

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) – Four more people have been arrested in connection to the alleged sex cult NXIVM , including group leaders with such titles “The Prefect” serving “The Vanguard.” Clare Bronfman, Kathy Russell, Lauren Salzman and Nancy Salzman were arrested Tuesday on a superseding indictment charging them with racketeering conspiracy. Previously charged were group founder Keith Raniere and “Smallville” actress Allison Mack . On Tuesday afternoon, Bronfman was set to be arraigned in a Brooklyn federal court while Russell and the Salzmans were to appear in federal court in Albany. A federal judge last month denied bail for Raniere , who prosecutors accuse of forming a barbaric secret society within NXIVM, pronounced “Nex-i-um,” a group that over the years has attracted a following of minor celebrities and wealthy people. Prosecutors allege a sub-group branded brainwashed victims with Raniere’s initials during initiation ceremonies that turned them into his sex slaves. The defense says the women were never abused and willingly let themselves be branded. NXIVM announced on its website that it has temporarily suspended operations. In April, authorities filed criminal sex trafficking and forced labor conspiracy charges against Mack and Raniere – also known as “Vanguard” – in connection NXIVM. A complaint previously filed in United States District Court seeks to foreclose on two properties in the Town of Halfmoon in upstate New York, about 15 miles from the NXIVM group’s headquarters in Albany. READ: Civil Complaint To Seize Properties In Halfmoon, N.Y. The document also gave some insight into other rituals and practices of the NXIVM group, which authorities say grew out of a previous enterprise called Executive Success Programs, Inc. (“ESP”) founded in 1998 by Raniere and Nancy Salzman. “Every year in August, Nxians celebrate ‘Vanguard Week’ in honor of Raniere’s birthday,” the complaint said. “Nancy Salzman is referred to as ‘The Prefect’; by Nxians, and her birthday is celebrated in May with the ‘Festival of Flowers.’” The complaint also described women’s roles in the empowerment group compared to the men, and especially Raniere as its leader. Based on information obtained during the course of this investigation, since ESP’s founding, Raniere has maintained a rotating group of fifteen to twenty women with whom he maintains sexual relationships. These women are not permitted to have sexual relationships with anyone but Raniere or to discuss with others their relationships with Raniere. Some of the Nxivm curriculum includes teachings about the need for men to have multiple sexual partners and the need for women to be monogamous. As “slaves” to their “masters,” investigators say women were expected to record “collateral” videos professing true and untrue confessions about themselves and others. Investigators allege some participants were branded on their skin with a symbol that incorporated Raniere’s initials. The complaint also described how NXIVM operated self-development courses costing $1,000 a day for five days, and used colored sashes worn by members to identify ranks of “goal levels” of recruitment, similar to how a so-called “pyramid scheme” multilevel marketing group operates.
