WASHINGTON (CNN) — Michael Cohen, President Donald Trump’s former personal attorney, claims that then-candidate Trump knew in advance about the June 2016 meeting in Trump Tower in which Russians were expected to offer his campaign dirt on Hillary Clinton, sources with knowledge tell CNN. Cohen is willing to make that assertion to special counsel Robert Mueller, the sources said. Cohen’s claim would contradict repeated denials by Trump, Donald Trump Jr., their lawyers and other administration officials who have said that the President knew nothing about the Trump Tower meeting until he was approached about it by The New York Times in July 2017. Cohen alleges that he was present, along with several others, when Trump was informed of the Russians’ offer by Trump Jr. By Cohen’s account, Trump approved going ahead with the meeting with the Russians, according to sources. To be clear, these sources said Cohen does not have evidence, such as audio recordings, to corroborate his claim, but he is willing to attest to his account. Cohen privately testified last year to two Congressional committees investigating Russian interference in the 2016 election. A source familiar with Cohen’s House testimony said he did not testify that Trump had advance knowledge. Cohen’s claims weren’t mentioned in separate reports issued by Republicans and Democrats on the House Intelligence Committee. Contacted by CNN, one of Cohen’s attorneys, Lanny Davis, declined to comment. Trump denied knowledge of the meeting in a tweet Friday morning. “I did NOT know of the meeting with my son, Don jr. Sounds to me like someone is trying to make up stories in order to get himself out of an unrelated jam (Taxi cabs maybe?). He even retained Bill and Crooked Hillary’s lawyer. Gee, I wonder if they helped him make the choice!” Trump tweeted. An FBI raid on Cohen’s office in April sought information about taxi owners who had financial dealings with Cohen, CNN has reported. Rudy Giuliani, the President’s attorney, told CNN’s Chris Cuomo on “Cuomo Prime Time” Thursday night that Cohen has “been lying all week, he’s been lying for years.” “I don’t see how he’s got any credibility,” Giuliani added. Giuliani also said Cohen is “the kind of witness that can really destroy your whole case” and called Cohen, who was a top Trump Organization attorney for a decade, a “pathological liar.” “Donald Trump Jr. has been professional and responsible throughout the Mueller and Congressional investigations,” said Alan Futerfas, an attorney for Donald Trump Jr. “We are very confident of the accuracy and reliability of the information that has been provided by Mr. Trump, Jr., and on his behalf.” According to people who have discussed the matter with Cohen, he has expressed hope that this claim about the Trump Tower meeting will help him reach out to Mueller and possibly lessen his legal troubles. He’s under scrutiny by federal prosecutors in Manhattan after Mueller referred Cohen’s case to them. The June 2016 meeting was arranged after a publicist who knew Trump Jr. told him in emails — in no uncertain terms — that a senior Russian official “offered to provide the Trump campaign” with damaging information about Clinton, and that the outreach was “part of Russia and its government’s support for Mr. Trump.” At the time, the Russian operation to covertly boost Trump’s candidacy wasn’t publicly known. Trump. Jr. responded, “if it’s what you say, I love it,” and started to arrange the meeting. At the meeting, Trump Jr. was joined by his brother-in-law Jared Kushner and Paul Manafort, who was Trump’s campaign chairman at the time. There were four Russians in the room, including a lawyer with Kremlin ties, a businessman who worked for an oligarch and a lobbyist with old KGB connections. After news of the meeting broke in July 2017, the Trump team offered misleading explanations and changed their story several times. At one point they said the meeting was about “adoption.” At various times, there were discrepancies in their story about how many people attended and even who attended the meeting. But one claim stayed consistent: that Trump had no knowledge of the meeting beforehand, wasn’t told about it afterward and first learned about it one year later. Those denials were repeatedly issued by Trump, his attorney Jay Sekulow, Trump Jr., Futerfas and White House press secretary Sarah Sanders. Those people denied that Trump had contemporaneous knowledge of the meeting on more than 15 occasions, according to CNN’s analysis. Trump said on July 12, 2017, that he “only heard about it two or three days ago.” One week later, Trump repeated that he “didn’t know anything about the meeting” because “nobody told me” about it. Around that same time, CNN’s Jake Tapper asked Sekulow to confirm Trump’s claims that he only recently learned about the controversial meeting. Sekulow’s response: “Yes, I swear.” But perhaps the highest-stakes denial was given by Trump Jr. in his testimony last year to the Senate Judiciary Committee. “He wasn’t aware of it,” Trump Jr. told lawmakers, referring to his father’s knowledge of the meeting. “And, frankly, by the time anyone was aware of it, which was summer of this year, as I stated earlier, I wouldn’t have wanted to get him involved in it because it had nothing to do with him.” Trump’s critics have long doubted these denials. They point to a series of phone calls Trump Jr. made to a blocked phone number before and after the meeting. They also note that two days before the meeting, Trump mysteriously announced plans to give a “major speech” about Clinton’s scandals. Trump Jr. says he didn’t get any dirt at the meeting — and the speech never happened. Even Steve Bannon, the former White House chief strategist and top Trump campaign official, said the meeting was “treasonous” and speculated that “the chance that Don Jr. did not walk these (Russians) up to his father’s office on the twenty-sixth floor is zero.” Trump Jr. has denied Bannon’s allegation. Bannon’s comments, to author Michael Wolff for his book “Fire and Fury,” triggered the bitter public divorce between Bannon and Trump in early 2018. Axios reported that Bannon does not have first-hand knowledge about whether Trump Jr. told his father, and Bannon later said his “treasonous” remark was directed at Manafort and not Trump Jr. The-CNN-Wire & © 2018 Cable News Network, Inc., a Time Warner Company. Cohen Claims Trump Knew In Advance Of 2016 Meeting Of His Son With Russians
GREENWICH, Conn. (CBSNewYork) – People in wealthy Greenwich, Connecticut value privacy and discretion. Like any town, some have secrets to keep. As CBS2’s Tony Aiello reports, letters threatening to expose them are being reported to police. “We’ve all done something wrong at some point in our lives. But they go to the worst-case scenario, ‘Oh, I don’t want my loved one to find out.’ And once again, it’s a scam,” said Greenwich Police Lt. David Nemecek. The letters are addressed by name to married men in Greenwich and claim “I know about the secret you are keeping from your wife… I have evidence of what you have been hiding.” More: Scammers Blackmailing Spouses Over Alleged Extramarital Affairs Police say names and addresses are easily gleaned from the internet or mailing lists available for purchase. “It has your information, your home. They try to put in as much personal information as they can to legitimize it,” Nemecek said. Resident Tony Gillis said if he got such a letter, he’d laugh. “I know what I do and don’t do. No one has anything on me that would put me in any type of jeopardy,” he said. But police fear some might fall for the letter’s demand for payment from $2,000 to $8,000 in untraceable cryptocurrency, such as bitcoin. “It’s an anonymous exchange, no way to track where the money went or who the money came from,” explained technology expert Ian Marlow. The scammers send out many letters, hoping to snare one victim trying to hide a guilty secret. “If you send 1,000 letters out, possibly you get one,” Gillis said. Greenwich Police and other departments are working with various federal agencies, trying to find those behind the blackmail scam. The FBI says the scammer doesn’t ask for an enormous amount of money, because victims are more likely to pay a smaller sum to make the perceived problem go away.

Blackmail Scam Targeting Married Men In Greenwich, Connecticut
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork/AP) – One of the New York Yankees’ biggest bats, Aaron Judge , was injured during Thursday night’s game – a major blow to the team’s lineup. But then, something unusual happened. Fans at the game started a sort of vigil for the slugger. The sight never before seen at a Yankees’ game sparked a look of confusion on first baseman Greg Bird’s face. “Now what do you make of this? I’ve never seen this at the stadium. It looks like a concert in the upper deck,” announcer Michael Kay said. Fans in left field turned on their phone flashlights, and the gesture spread throughout the stadium. “When the lights came on, it was pretty obvious that fans were showing their support for him,” said fan Dave Wengel. “I wish they didn’t have to do it, but it was kind of true Yankees fans, you know hanging in there for Aaron.” “I asked somebody else that comes to a lot of games what the deal was with that, and they said they had never seen it before,” Stephen Haney, of Kentucky, said. “I thought they were doing the wave or something,” another fan added. CBS2’s Vanessa Murdock asked fans whether it should become another tradition at Yankee Stadium, like bleacher creatures with roll call. “I think it will be. I think everybody really like it,” said Haney. “Hopefully for better circumstances,” Wengel said. “Sure, why not?” said another man. Judge was taken to the hospital and has a chip fracture on his right wrist. He’s expected to sit out for the next three weeks. “It could’ve been a lot worse,” he said Friday night. Judge is hitting .285 with 26 home runs and 61 RBIs. Boone said Giancarlo Stanton will take over in right during Judge’s recovery — Stanton has split time in left field, right and at designated hitter. Judge was nailed by a tailing fastball from Kansas City right-hander Jakob Junis in the first inning Thursday. “I had a bad feeling,” Judge said. “I didn’t have a good feeling when it hit me.” Judge winced, did a quick twirl in the batter’s box, slung his bat toward the dugout and headed to first base. A trainer checked him and had Judge do some hand exercises. Judge, who was the DH, stayed in the game and got an infield single the next time up. But after having trouble swinging in the indoor batting cage, he was pulled for a pinch-hitter in the fourth. The Yankees and Royals were rained out Friday night , and Judge spent the day getting treatment. Mostly a mix of ice and compression to keep the swelling down. Judge also has a brace for the lower half of his right arm. He wore it while taking part in a pregame presentation, before the game was called. “It’s tough, but stuff like this happens,” he said. The Yankees said Judge doesn’t need surgery. He was put him the 10-day disabled list and infielder-outfielder Tyler Wade was recalled from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. The Yankees went into the weekend trailing AL East-leading Boston by 4 1/2 games. The teams play four times at Fenway Park next week. Boone said Brett Gardner, Aaron Hicks and Stanton will form the outfield for most games while Judge is out. The versatile Wade figures to get some time there, too. There’s no timetable for outfielders Clint Frazier and Jacoby Ellsbury to return from the disabled list. Catcher Gary Sanchez also is on the DL and expected to be miss most of August. After the Yankees bolstered their pitching staff this week by getting starter J.A. Happ from Toronto and reliever Zach Britton from Baltimore, there’s always a chance they’ll make another deal for a hitter before the July 31 non-waiver trade deadline. “Whether we get reinforcements, who knows?” Boone said. Yankees pitcher Sonny Gray said his right thumb was feeling better a day after it was hit by a hard grounder. The right-hander said he fully expects to make his next start as scheduled. “I’ll be ready in five days,” he said. The Yankees also said newly acquired J.A. Happ would make his New York debut Sunday when he starts against the Royals. Toronto traded the lefty on Thursday for infielder Brandon Drury and minor league outfielder Billy McKinney. NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) – A homeless population living on the street by choice is back in the city again, and some East Village residents aren’t thrilled about these visitors. Packs of so-called “crust punks” or “crusties” taking over the streets, panhandling, drinking and getting rowdy have become a familiar sight in the summer, reports CBS2’s Reena Roy. “It’s getting worse now than it was before,” said Tania Martinez who lives in the East Village. “Me paying a lot of money being here, I shouldn’t see things like this.” The homeless nomads – known to hop freight trains – pop in and out of cities across the country like Seattle and San Francisco, often ending up in and around Tompkins Square Park when it gets warm out. The pilgrimage dates back to the late 1970s when many began migrating for the neighborhood’s punk rock music scene. Like most subcultures, rejecting the status quo was a conscious choice by its members. “It’s absolutely a choice,” said Dallas, one of the movement’s adherents. “We just hate our government system, the way it affects us as a whole.” Dallas admits life on the streets can often get out of hand. “Some of us, we drink and fight and do drugs and people don’t like that on the streets,” he said, admitting their presence can be a nuisance. NYPD sources say there are more transient people this summer because of the city’s increasing opioid epidemic. The narcotics division has been patrolling the park to help, with police doubling arrests this year – many of them drug related. Police sources say because of the stepped up enforcement, many “crust punks” have started sleeping inside abandoned buildings in the outer boroughs instead. Councilman Stephen Levin says homeless outreach teams are also out in force, but can only do so much. “People have a right to stay on street if they want to, if they choose to,” said Levin. “It’s our job as the city to provide an adequate alternative to that so people feel safe.” So for now, the “crusties” are here to stay… until their next stop.

Summer Brings Wave Of ‘Crust Punk’ Homeless Nomads To East Village
SHASTA COUNTY, CA (CBSNews) – The Carr fire in Northern California exploded overnight. Homes were still on fire Friday morning after a night of devastation in Shasta County, California. The sun burned through a haze of smoke, revealing blackened cars and the charred rubble of houses. “Devastating, homes were exploding, cars were exploding,” said Shasta County resident Tom Mahan. More From CBS News Mahan ran into a burning neighborhood to help save the home of his friend, firefighter Donovan Lee. “First thing that I seen was an RV trying to come out with all the evacuees. It was – you could tell he was driving frantic. And as he entered the intersection, he actually hit a sheriff squad car and drug it about 200 feet,” said Mahan. “It was pretty intense,” said Lee. Lee did save his home, hosing it down as flames surrounded him. “There were a couple of times when I was thinking oh maybe this wasn’t a good idea,” said Lee. “It just kind of makes me feel a little sick,” said Shasta County resident Judy Hein. Hein lost the home she lived in for 18 years. She had enough time to gather some belongings. “You need your important papers and you need this, but you just don’t want to stop there,” said Hein. The fire killed one firefighter, who was operating a bulldozer, and one from the city of Redding. Thousands have been evacuated and dozens of buildings were destroyed. Eighty-eight wildfires are reportedly burning right now around the country.

NEW YORK (AP) — The game between the Kansas City Royals and New York Yankees scheduled for Friday night was postponed because of rain. The game never started and was called a half-hour after it was supposed to begin. The game will be made up as part of a split doubleheader Saturday, with games at 1:05 p.m. and 7:05 p.m. Luis Severino (14-3) will move up and pitch the opener for the Yankees and CC Sabathia (6-4) will start the second game. Sabathia had been set to pitch Friday night on his bobblehead night at Yankee Stadium. Instead, he will pitch the nightcap on 13 days’ rest, a gap extended by rainouts and the All-Star break. Brad Keller (3-4), who was ready to start Friday night for the Royals on his 23rd birthday, and fellow rookie Heath Fillmyer (0-1) will pitch the doubleheader. Fillmyer grew up in central New Jersey and figures to have plenty of family and friends in the stands for his first game at Yankee Stadium. The tarp was on the field during the late afternoon and it was raining at the scheduled start time of 7:05 p.m. (© Copyright 2018 The Associated Press. All Rights Reserved. Yankees-Royals Game Rained Out; Split Doubleheader Saturday
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) — Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer death, and surgery to remove the tumors often leaves the patient with impaired lung function. But now, tiny coils are helping patients keep more of their healthy lung. Criminal defense attorney David Sherman is fighting his toughest and most surprising case yet — lung cancer. “Never even touched a cigarette in my life except to pick up cigarette butts that others have thrown on the floor,” Sherman says. A nagging cough made his doctor suspicious. “They found three tumors in my lungs. I wanted to know if I’ve got cancer and if I did, I want to get it out of me soon as I can before it spreads.” To remove those tumors, doctors at Cleveland Clinic inserted tiny lung coils to mark suspicious nodules. One end of the coil is placed on each side of the nodule to help guide the surgeon, then a specialized CT scan is used, allowing for extreme precision in removing the tumors. “We can actually, in the operating room, perform an X-ray and see exactly where that coil is and take out the nodule by taking out the coil,” said Dr. Daniel Raymond. Surgeons are thus able to save lung tissue that would have otherwise been removed along with the tumor. “Rather than cutting out an entire lobe or potentially even an entire lung, we can just take out a small bit of tissue, and that leaves them with a lot more function,” said Dr. Jason Lempel. Sherman’s doctor says he has a 90 percent chance of being cured. Right now, he’s breathing easy and loving life. Many experts recommend that longtime smokers have screening CT scans for early detection of lung cancer. Then, it’s important to be treated by an experienced medical team that regularly manages lung cancer patients.

"Homes were exploding": Residents describe deadly blaze roaring through Northern California
Stony Brook, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) — The family of a Long Island newborn with a fighting spirit to survive learned Friday their baby boy may be released from hospital next month. Christian Rojas is 83 days old and has spent every moment of his life in the neonatal intensive care unit of Stony Brook Children’s Hospital. “I was 12 weeks pregnant, and we went in to find out the gender, and they told us that he was a boy,” said Christian’s mother, Nykki Hunter. “We were just overcome with emotion. Then, they said, ‘We need to speak with you in the other room.’” “My body just went numb, because I was trying to process what was going on,” said Christian’s father, Christopher Rojas. An ultrasound revealed Christian would be born with a congenital disorder called gastroschisis. His intestines had emerged through a hole in the abdominal wall on the outside of his body, and his life was at risk. “Christian suffered, unfortunately, the consequences of the intestine twisting when it’s outside the body,” said Dr. Christopher Muratore. “That’s the most feared complication.” The newborn was rushed into surgery, saving his life. In the meantime, specialists across the country are stymied why this condition has increased 30 percent in five years. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention say 4.9 births out of every 10,000 are linked to gastroschisis. Age of the mother, environmental factors and recessive genetic traits are being studied. “The prayers haven’t stopped,” said Rojas. “We get so much support from the community, all around social media.” Families whose babies have gastroschisis are linked via a vast social media outreach. “It just gives us that much more hope and faith to get through this and know we’re not alone,” said Rojas. Christian’s empty nursery awaits him. Doctors hope he can go home in another month. “We never want to leave him behind,” said Hunter. “It’s the hardest thing to put him down and walk away and leave him in the hands of somebody else who’s not us.” Both mom and dad work, but once Christian comes home, one parent will have to be with him at all times. The local community is holding a fundraiser on Saturday at the hospital to help with Christian’s medical costs and to raise awareness of the gastroschisis disorder.
