All the artificial light of modern life may have a dark side: It’s been implicated in America’s epidemic of sleep deprivation. Yet lack of sleep is being tied to more and more serious health problems and the CDC has found that 35 percent of American adults aren’t getting the recommended minimum of seven hours of sleep each night. National Geographic Magazine explores the topic in its September edition’s cover story, “The Science of Sleep.” Senior editor Robert Kunzig joins “CBS This Morning: Saturday” to discuss the recent “explosion of science” on our sleep habits.

NORTH HILLS (CBSLA) — A female officer was shot in the leg Friday in a return of gunfire with a suspect in North Hills. Sky9’s Stu Mundel was over the scene when the officer could be seen being placed in the back of an ambulance. The incident took place at Plummer and Noble, authorities said. Her concerned partner walked along beside her after she was put on a gurney. Officials said the suspect was also hit in the gun fight. His condition was not given. Very little was known about how the incident started but Mundel said the officers were not responding to a radio call. The officer was transported to a nearby hospital. There was no word if the suspect was also transported. Preliminary information said the suspect was “in custody.”

ANAHEIM (AP) — Kole Calhoun homered on the first pitch of the bottom of the 10th inning, giving the Los Angeles Angels a 4-3 victory over the Seattle Mariners on Friday night. Calhoun finished with three RBIs, including his 12th home run of the season off Mariners reliever Juan Nicasio (1-5) The Mariners were unsuccessful in trying to take the lead in the top of 10th, when Dee Gordon attempted to steal home on the back end of a double-steal with Jean Segura. Segura broke for second base on a pitch from Angels reliever Jim Johnson (3-2). Gordon then broke for home with Angels second baseman Ian Kinsler firing a return throw to catcher Chris Herrmann. Gordon was initially ruled safe by home plate umpire Kerwin Danley, but the call was overturned via replay. The Mariners also had a prime scoring chance in the ninth inning after Nelson Cruz singled and Kyle Seager walked with no outs. But right-hander Hansel Robles struck out Ryon Healy and left-hander Jose Alvarez got a groundout and a strikeout of Ben Gamel to end the threat. Albert Pujols made a diving stop in the ninth inning on a ground ball down the first-base line from Herrmann to prevent at least two Mariners runs. Angels starter Andrew Heaney continued his solid pitching at home, giving up three runs on seven hits over eight innings. He has a 1.60 ERA over nine home starts this season. Calhoun hit a ground-rule double with the bases loaded in the second inning to give the Angels their first runs of the game. David Fletcher brought another home in the second on a sacrifice fly. The Mariners won consecutive games for the first time since beating the Kansas City Royals on July 1 and Angels on July 3. Mike Zunino hit a fifth-inning home run for the Mariners, his 13th and first since June 29. He spent time on the disabled list over that stretch with a left ankle bone bruise. Cruz added a solo shot in the seventh, his 23rd. Cruz has just two home runs in July. The Mariners tied the game in the eighth inning on Guillermo Heredia’s bloop RBI single to right field. Zunino started the inning with a double that was misplayed by Angels left fielder Justin Upton. Zunino moved to third on a ground out by Gamel, before Heredia’s hit. The Angels’ three-run second inning started on a leadoff double from Albert Pujols. It was the 3,061st hit of Pujols’ career, moving him into sole possession of 24th place ahead of Craig Biggio. Former Mariner Ichiro Suzuki is next on the list with 3,089 hits. (@Copyright 2018. The Associated Press. All Rights Reserved. HOLLYWOOD (CBSLA) — A Hollywood couple had to come up with Plan B for their wedding when the original location was caught in the cross hairs of the Cranston Fire. The bride and groom spoke to KCAL9’s Jo Kwon about their change of plans. Joey Fonacier and Connie Lin got engaged two years ago and picked Idyllwild for the big day because the area represents their love for the great outdoors. But the Cranston Fire meant their big day was in danger of being derailed. “Hoping it was a small fire but I did not know it was going to escalate to something this big,” Lin said. “I was like no way,” says Fonacier. “This can’t be happening.” He says a friend texted him and asked, ‘Did you see about the fire in Idyllwild?’” “I thought he was kidding,” Fonacier says. He went on line and realized the text was no joke. “Okay, it does not look like we’re going to Idyllwild,” he said. A year of planning — gone! (credit: Fonacier/Lin GoFundMe) Now they had a condo filled with wedding stuff that was supposed to be on its way to Idyllwild. “I thought we need a minute,” Fonacier says, “So we went to go get ice cream.” They even took a selfie to commemorate the occasion — they had about 48 hours to plan a new wedding. “I didn’t even know how I was supposed to feel,” Lin says. Thanks to friends and family — and strangers — they couple has pulled off the near-impossible. “I thought let’s do a Plan B,” said the groom’s mother, Luz Fonacier,”And my son said there’s no Plan B. And I said, yes, there’s always a Plan B!” Lin Googled “last-minute” wedding venues but there “was no information I needed.” They pulled off a Plan B with the help of a GoFundMe page to help pay for the second nuptials. “I cannot believe people set up this GoFundMe for us” Lin says. “I’m just so thankful.” Luz is busy with the centerpieces. Dad is helping with the table markers. It’s all hands on deck as they get ready for their new special day. “I can’t believe we pulled this off,” Lin says, “And I think I’ll treasure the party even more now.” And the groom concurs. “We thought we’d have something beautiful in Idyllwild,” he says, “And everyone would remember that, but everyone will definitely remember this.” The couple will be married Saturday in front of 100 guests at the Fig House in Highland Park.
