NEW BRUNSWICK, N.J. (CBSNewYork) – New Jersey’s official state flower is the violet; its state animal is the horse; now, it may be getting a state microbe. Yes, the Garden State may be getting a germ. “I think it fits for New Jersey. Us to have a state microbe is kind of just saying that germs fit us very well,” Jersey City resident Wendell Senatus told CBS2’s Meg Baker. Some may see it as yet another reason why New Jersey gets a bad rap. But others say it’s an honor. Streptomyces griseus was discovered in the Garden State in the early 1900s and helped create the world’s first antibiotic for tuberculosis in 1943. “I hope the trend turns out to be contagious. It definitely should spread. We need to infect all the other states in the union,” Browns Mills resident Tim Schwanitz said. “I think microbes should get more recognition, because they do a lot for the community,” said a Wall Township woman. Rutgers University professor Douglas Eveleigh told Baker “a microbe is a lovely little bacteria.” “I’ll put in a New Jersey plug in that it came from New Jersey soil,” he added. That’s right, Jersey dirt with healing powers. “It hit tuberculosis, which at that time was probably the biggest killer in the world,” said Eveleigh. “It’s done uncalculable things for humanity, it’s essentially saved millions of lives,” associate professor Jeff Boyd added. Rutgers professors Albert Schatz and Dr. Selman Waksman received a 1952 Nobel Price for helping to cure the deadliest disease of their time. “Kids will learn about the state bird, the state bug, and now they learn about the state microbe. Just another part of our would and another branch of science to be explored,” said Daniella Slomko, of Woodbridge. Science lovers say have a “germy” state has its benefits. The state voted unanimously in favor of the bacterial bill. Now, it’s on to the Assembly for a vote.

QUEENS, NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) – Sidewalks damaged by last winter’s storms are finally being fixed in Queens. But one homeowner says she’s getting nowhere when it comes to her family’s car that was crushed by a toppled tree. It was a beyond welcoming sight in front of the Maddalena-Vigliotti home in Whitestone, Queens — city crews finally repairing the damaged sidewalk. “If it wasn’t for you and your covering this story, nothing would’ve gotten done,” Queens resident Anna Maddalena told CBS2’s Andrea Grymes. Two weeks ago, CBS2 reported multiple locations across Queens, where city-owned trees uprooted during storms back in March. The city had cleared the trees, but months later still hadn’t fixed the sidewalks. This week, after CBS2’s reports , repairs are finally being made. For this family, the sidewalk was not the only thing destroyed when the tree came down. They’re still looking for answers from the city about one of their cars. The 2008 red Mazda had been parked on the street in front of the house, but when the tree collapsed, the car was totaled under the weight of the limbs. Maddalena says they had collision insurance but not comprehensive coverage, which would’ve covered the damage. “Why should I be liable for that? It was the city’s tree,” she said. So she filed a claim with the city comptroller’s office in May. She got a letter back saying if the office is unable to resolve the claim, “any lawsuit against the city must be started within one year and 90 from the date of occurrence.” Maddalena says she then called numerous times, trying to figure out what she’s supposed to do with the car, as it sits in the driveway. “Do I have to keep the vehicle? Or can I have it sent to a junk yard?” she said. “No one has called me back.” So on Friday, CBS2 reached out to the comptroller’s office and they quickly responded. Maddalena says she got a call from the division chief, who apologized several times and promised someone would come out and assess the car by Monday. After that, they can finally get rid of it. “I was thrilled. I was so happy, and I can’t believe you did it,” she said. In a statement to CBS2 the New York City Comptroller’s Office said: “We strive to efficiently review all claims filed against the City on their merits. Each year, the Comptroller’s office processes about 30,000 new claims – and anyone who needs help navigating the claim’s process, or with any other community concerns, should immediately reach out to our Community Action Center at (212) 669-3916 or email at action@comptroller.nyc.gov .”

WASHINGTON (CNN) — Michael Cohen, President Donald Trump’s former personal attorney, claims that then-candidate Trump knew in advance about the June 2016 meeting in Trump Tower in which Russians were expected to offer his campaign dirt on Hillary Clinton, sources with knowledge tell CNN. Cohen is willing to make that assertion to special counsel Robert Mueller, the sources said. Cohen’s claim would contradict repeated denials by Trump, Donald Trump Jr., their lawyers and other administration officials who have said that the President knew nothing about the Trump Tower meeting until he was approached about it by The New York Times in July 2017. Cohen alleges that he was present, along with several others, when Trump was informed of the Russians’ offer by Trump Jr. By Cohen’s account, Trump approved going ahead with the meeting with the Russians, according to sources. To be clear, these sources said Cohen does not have evidence, such as audio recordings, to corroborate his claim, but he is willing to attest to his account. Cohen privately testified last year to two Congressional committees investigating Russian interference in the 2016 election. A source familiar with Cohen’s House testimony said he did not testify that Trump had advance knowledge. Cohen’s claims weren’t mentioned in separate reports issued by Republicans and Democrats on the House Intelligence Committee. Contacted by CNN, one of Cohen’s attorneys, Lanny Davis, declined to comment. Trump denied knowledge of the meeting in a tweet Friday morning. “I did NOT know of the meeting with my son, Don jr. Sounds to me like someone is trying to make up stories in order to get himself out of an unrelated jam (Taxi cabs maybe?). He even retained Bill and Crooked Hillary’s lawyer. Gee, I wonder if they helped him make the choice!” Trump tweeted. An FBI raid on Cohen’s office in April sought information about taxi owners who had financial dealings with Cohen, CNN has reported. Rudy Giuliani, the President’s attorney, told CNN’s Chris Cuomo on “Cuomo Prime Time” Thursday night that Cohen has “been lying all week, he’s been lying for years.” “I don’t see how he’s got any credibility,” Giuliani added. Giuliani also said Cohen is “the kind of witness that can really destroy your whole case” and called Cohen, who was a top Trump Organization attorney for a decade, a “pathological liar.” “Donald Trump Jr. has been professional and responsible throughout the Mueller and Congressional investigations,” said Alan Futerfas, an attorney for Donald Trump Jr. “We are very confident of the accuracy and reliability of the information that has been provided by Mr. Trump, Jr., and on his behalf.” According to people who have discussed the matter with Cohen, he has expressed hope that this claim about the Trump Tower meeting will help him reach out to Mueller and possibly lessen his legal troubles. He’s under scrutiny by federal prosecutors in Manhattan after Mueller referred Cohen’s case to them. The June 2016 meeting was arranged after a publicist who knew Trump Jr. told him in emails — in no uncertain terms — that a senior Russian official “offered to provide the Trump campaign” with damaging information about Clinton, and that the outreach was “part of Russia and its government’s support for Mr. Trump.” At the time, the Russian operation to covertly boost Trump’s candidacy wasn’t publicly known. Trump. Jr. responded, “if it’s what you say, I love it,” and started to arrange the meeting. At the meeting, Trump Jr. was joined by his brother-in-law Jared Kushner and Paul Manafort, who was Trump’s campaign chairman at the time. There were four Russians in the room, including a lawyer with Kremlin ties, a businessman who worked for an oligarch and a lobbyist with old KGB connections. After news of the meeting broke in July 2017, the Trump team offered misleading explanations and changed their story several times. At one point they said the meeting was about “adoption.” At various times, there were discrepancies in their story about how many people attended and even who attended the meeting. But one claim stayed consistent: that Trump had no knowledge of the meeting beforehand, wasn’t told about it afterward and first learned about it one year later. Those denials were repeatedly issued by Trump, his attorney Jay Sekulow, Trump Jr., Futerfas and White House press secretary Sarah Sanders. Those people denied that Trump had contemporaneous knowledge of the meeting on more than 15 occasions, according to CNN’s analysis. Trump said on July 12, 2017, that he “only heard about it two or three days ago.” One week later, Trump repeated that he “didn’t know anything about the meeting” because “nobody told me” about it. Around that same time, CNN’s Jake Tapper asked Sekulow to confirm Trump’s claims that he only recently learned about the controversial meeting. Sekulow’s response: “Yes, I swear.” But perhaps the highest-stakes denial was given by Trump Jr. in his testimony last year to the Senate Judiciary Committee. “He wasn’t aware of it,” Trump Jr. told lawmakers, referring to his father’s knowledge of the meeting. “And, frankly, by the time anyone was aware of it, which was summer of this year, as I stated earlier, I wouldn’t have wanted to get him involved in it because it had nothing to do with him.” Trump’s critics have long doubted these denials. They point to a series of phone calls Trump Jr. made to a blocked phone number before and after the meeting. They also note that two days before the meeting, Trump mysteriously announced plans to give a “major speech” about Clinton’s scandals. Trump Jr. says he didn’t get any dirt at the meeting — and the speech never happened. Even Steve Bannon, the former White House chief strategist and top Trump campaign official, said the meeting was “treasonous” and speculated that “the chance that Don Jr. did not walk these (Russians) up to his father’s office on the twenty-sixth floor is zero.” Trump Jr. has denied Bannon’s allegation. Bannon’s comments, to author Michael Wolff for his book “Fire and Fury,” triggered the bitter public divorce between Bannon and Trump in early 2018. Axios reported that Bannon does not have first-hand knowledge about whether Trump Jr. told his father, and Bannon later said his “treasonous” remark was directed at Manafort and not Trump Jr. The-CNN-Wire & © 2018 Cable News Network, Inc., a Time Warner Company. Cohen Claims Trump Knew In Advance Of 2016 Meeting Of His Son With Russians
GREENWICH, Conn. (CBSNewYork) – People in wealthy Greenwich, Connecticut value privacy and discretion. Like any town, some have secrets to keep. As CBS2’s Tony Aiello reports, letters threatening to expose them are being reported to police. “We’ve all done something wrong at some point in our lives. But they go to the worst-case scenario, ‘Oh, I don’t want my loved one to find out.’ And once again, it’s a scam,” said Greenwich Police Lt. David Nemecek. The letters are addressed by name to married men in Greenwich and claim “I know about the secret you are keeping from your wife… I have evidence of what you have been hiding.” More: Scammers Blackmailing Spouses Over Alleged Extramarital Affairs Police say names and addresses are easily gleaned from the internet or mailing lists available for purchase. “It has your information, your home. They try to put in as much personal information as they can to legitimize it,” Nemecek said. Resident Tony Gillis said if he got such a letter, he’d laugh. “I know what I do and don’t do. No one has anything on me that would put me in any type of jeopardy,” he said. But police fear some might fall for the letter’s demand for payment from $2,000 to $8,000 in untraceable cryptocurrency, such as bitcoin. “It’s an anonymous exchange, no way to track where the money went or who the money came from,” explained technology expert Ian Marlow. The scammers send out many letters, hoping to snare one victim trying to hide a guilty secret. “If you send 1,000 letters out, possibly you get one,” Gillis said. Greenwich Police and other departments are working with various federal agencies, trying to find those behind the blackmail scam. The FBI says the scammer doesn’t ask for an enormous amount of money, because victims are more likely to pay a smaller sum to make the perceived problem go away.

Blackmail Scam Targeting Married Men In Greenwich, Connecticut
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork/AP) – One of the New York Yankees’ biggest bats, Aaron Judge , was injured during Thursday night’s game – a major blow to the team’s lineup. But then, something unusual happened. Fans at the game started a sort of vigil for the slugger. The sight never before seen at a Yankees’ game sparked a look of confusion on first baseman Greg Bird’s face. “Now what do you make of this? I’ve never seen this at the stadium. It looks like a concert in the upper deck,” announcer Michael Kay said. Fans in left field turned on their phone flashlights, and the gesture spread throughout the stadium. “When the lights came on, it was pretty obvious that fans were showing their support for him,” said fan Dave Wengel. “I wish they didn’t have to do it, but it was kind of true Yankees fans, you know hanging in there for Aaron.” “I asked somebody else that comes to a lot of games what the deal was with that, and they said they had never seen it before,” Stephen Haney, of Kentucky, said. “I thought they were doing the wave or something,” another fan added. CBS2’s Vanessa Murdock asked fans whether it should become another tradition at Yankee Stadium, like bleacher creatures with roll call. “I think it will be. I think everybody really like it,” said Haney. “Hopefully for better circumstances,” Wengel said. “Sure, why not?” said another man. Judge was taken to the hospital and has a chip fracture on his right wrist. He’s expected to sit out for the next three weeks. “It could’ve been a lot worse,” he said Friday night. Judge is hitting .285 with 26 home runs and 61 RBIs. Boone said Giancarlo Stanton will take over in right during Judge’s recovery — Stanton has split time in left field, right and at designated hitter. Judge was nailed by a tailing fastball from Kansas City right-hander Jakob Junis in the first inning Thursday. “I had a bad feeling,” Judge said. “I didn’t have a good feeling when it hit me.” Judge winced, did a quick twirl in the batter’s box, slung his bat toward the dugout and headed to first base. A trainer checked him and had Judge do some hand exercises. Judge, who was the DH, stayed in the game and got an infield single the next time up. But after having trouble swinging in the indoor batting cage, he was pulled for a pinch-hitter in the fourth. The Yankees and Royals were rained out Friday night , and Judge spent the day getting treatment. Mostly a mix of ice and compression to keep the swelling down. Judge also has a brace for the lower half of his right arm. He wore it while taking part in a pregame presentation, before the game was called. “It’s tough, but stuff like this happens,” he said. The Yankees said Judge doesn’t need surgery. He was put him the 10-day disabled list and infielder-outfielder Tyler Wade was recalled from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. The Yankees went into the weekend trailing AL East-leading Boston by 4 1/2 games. The teams play four times at Fenway Park next week. Boone said Brett Gardner, Aaron Hicks and Stanton will form the outfield for most games while Judge is out. The versatile Wade figures to get some time there, too. There’s no timetable for outfielders Clint Frazier and Jacoby Ellsbury to return from the disabled list. Catcher Gary Sanchez also is on the DL and expected to be miss most of August. After the Yankees bolstered their pitching staff this week by getting starter J.A. Happ from Toronto and reliever Zach Britton from Baltimore, there’s always a chance they’ll make another deal for a hitter before the July 31 non-waiver trade deadline. “Whether we get reinforcements, who knows?” Boone said. Yankees pitcher Sonny Gray said his right thumb was feeling better a day after it was hit by a hard grounder. The right-hander said he fully expects to make his next start as scheduled. “I’ll be ready in five days,” he said. The Yankees also said newly acquired J.A. Happ would make his New York debut Sunday when he starts against the Royals. Toronto traded the lefty on Thursday for infielder Brandon Drury and minor league outfielder Billy McKinney.
