NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) – The man accused of shooting an NYPD detective early Friday morning in Brooklyn has been charged with attempted murder, among other charges. Kelvin Stichel, 33, was charged Saturday with attempted aggravated murder of a peace officer, attempted murder and robbery. Police said Det. Miguel Soto and his partner were in an unmarked police van when they noticed 33-year-old Kelvin Stichel, who was wanted in a domestic armed robbery. “The police identified themselves and told the man to show them his hands,” said Police Commissioner James O’Neill. “The suspect then displayed a gun and shot at the officers, striking a detective once in the leg. The detective returned fire as the two other officers and the suspect ran away.” Soto was shot once in the right thigh, and the bullet passed through his leg. The 32-year-old husband, father and seven-year member of the NYPD was treated at Kings County Hospital and released about eight hours later. “He’s a real tough guy. I’m glad he’s part of the NYPD. He does a great job each and every day,” O’Neill said. Stichel was shot in the arm. Officers followed a trail of blood to find him hiding in the hallway of an apartment building on Kingston Avenue. NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) – The man accused in a brutal attempted rape on the Upper West Side appeared in court Saturday afternoon. Desmond Smith, 32, was arrested Thursday and charged with attempted rape, sexual abuse, strangulation and assault. Police said the 37-year-old victim exited an Uber around 11 p.m. Wednesday near Central Park West and 84th Street. Smith allegedly approached her and tried to talk to her. When she ignored him, he allegedly threw her onto the ground, punched, stomped and bit her as he started to choke her and removed her clothing. The woman bit him and screamed for help, police said. “I was looking down from my window when I heard the loud argument and the screaming,” a neighbor told CBS2’s Alice Gainer. “I saw a guy with a girl lying on the floor, on the ground, and the guy was kicking her head. Then the attacker ripped the girl’s skirt and underwear.” A doorman who was working nearby told Gainer he heard her screams and went to see what happened. He was trying to take a picture of the attacker, when the flash on his camera distracted the suspect. “She was on the floor and he was on top of her. He was hitting her, basically, with hand or foot, I couldn’t see that, but also in the way I saw him pulling off the clothes,” Ernest Pjedri said. “He left her and was coming behind me.” Pjedri said the man told him the woman owed him money. Both the neighbor and the doorman called police, but the victim and suspect had both left separately before officers arrived. According to court documents, the woman suffered fractures to her face and chest, as well as cuts and bruises to her face, neck, arms and legs. Smith was arrested the following night. Police said he lived at Skyway Men’s Shelter 83 rd Street Annex, which is run by the Department of Homeless Services. He has 10 prior arrests, including assault, harassment and grand larceny.

GOLETA (CBSLA/AP) — A fast-moving brush fire in the Santa Barbara County community of Goleta has damaged or destroyed 20 homes and structures and was threatening scores more Saturday morning, as thousands of people evacuated to safety. (Santa Barbara County Fire Department spokesman Mike Eliason/Twitter) The Holiday Fire started as a structure fire sometime before 8:45 p.m. on North Fairview Avenue, above Goleta, and quickly spread to nearby brush, the Santa Barbara County Fire Department reports. The fire had burned at least 60 acres as of 8 a.m. Saturday morning and was only 5 percent contained. Total calm Saturday morning replaced the 50 mile-per-hour gusts and forward progress of the fire was stopped, Santa Barbara County Fire Capt. Dave Zaniboni said. “It’s really given us a good opportunity to get in there and get some work done,” Zaniboni said, cautioning that critical fire weather warnings would remain in effect until the evening. An excessive heat warning was in effect until 9 p.m. for Santa Barbara County, the National Weather Service reported, while a red flag warning was in effect through 6 p.m. (Mike Eliason/Twitter) Evacuations were in effect for about 2,500 people. They applied to areas north of the Cathedral Oaks neighborhood to West Camino Cielo Road, and from La Patera Lane, west to North Patterson Avenue. All roads going north from La Patera Lane to Patterson Avenue, along Cathedral Oaks, were closed to the public. As some houses smoldered, a few residents who hadn’t left or had managed to return surveyed damage that seemed random: destroyed homes next to others completely intact. Eric Durtschi stood outside his destroyed house, where a burned-out car stood in the driveway and kids’ bicycles were strewn about. Durtschi, his wife and six children had left Utah and moved in just a few weeks ago. He said he hadn’t yet told his two oldest children their home was gone. He managed to collect his severely burned vintage guns, hoping to salvage them. Meanwhile, a neighbor across the street saw his home spared. The man had stayed through the night spraying down other people’s houses. The area is west of where the Thomas Fire, California’s largest in history, raged last December . SHERMAN OAKS (CBSLA) — A former UCLA and NBA basketball star was found dead inside a Sherman Oaks home Saturday morning after he barricaded himself inside the residence for 11 hours following a shootout with officers. The victim was identified as 27-year-old Tyler Honeycutt, according to TMZ. (Los Angeles Times/Getty Images) The incident began when Los Angeles police responded to a man with a gun call in the 4900 block of Tyrone Avenue around 5 p.m. Friday and the man fired at officers, who returned fire. The suspect barricaded himself inside the home, so police set up a perimeter and called in a SWAT team, according to LAPD Officer Jeff Lee. A SWAT team entered the home and located an unresponsive male, who was pronounced dead at the scene, the LAPD tweeted at 3:45 a.m. Saturday. Police later confirmed that the suspect appeared to have died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound, and was not struck by any gunfire from the officers. No officers were injured. Some residents were evacuated during the standoff. It’s unclear if they’ve been allowed to return home. Honeycutt played two seasons at UCLA from 2009 to 2011 and then spent two seasons with the Sacramento Kings after being taken in the second round of the 2011 NBA Draft. He then spent several seasons playing in Europe. At the time of his death, he was playing for the club BC Khimki in Russia. The peak of the heat wave came Friday and will continue Saturday with “widespread record-breaking triple-digit heat” expected, the National Weather Service wrote. “The extreme record-breaking heat in combination with single-digit humidities and gusty north winds will continue to bring very critical fire weather conditions across the mountains, Santa Barbara south coast, Santa Clarita Valley, San Fernando Valley and Santa Monica mountains.” The Los Angeles Department of Water and Power reported that 34,500 customers were without power as of 8 a.m. Saturday. In Koreatown, a high-rise apartment building for seniors had been without power since Friday night: the 14-story Sheraton Town House Apartments at 639 S. Harry Maguire and Dele Alli scored with headers in a 2-0 win over Sweden on Saturday, earning England a match against either Croatia or host nation Russia for a place in the final. England has advanced further than was widely expected. Not even the England side containing stars like Beckham, Steven Gerrard and a young Wayne Rooney ever got this far at a major tournament. England, the 1966 World Cup champion, last reached the semifinals in 1990. In 2014, the team didn’t even make it out of the group stage. But the performances of Gareth Southgate’s young lineup in Russia are being celebrated wildly back home. The surprising run is being fuelled by goals from set pieces, and there was another against Sweden when Maguire headed in a corner in the 30th minute. Alli added the second goal by meeting a far-post cross from Jesse Lingard with a powerful header in the 59th, becoming — at 22 — the second-youngest scorer for England at a World Cup. “We knew set plays would be key,” Maguire said. “And also that little ball that Jesse sent in for Dele, that was great. We worked on that in practice.” It proved to be a match too far for the Swedes, who got further at a World Cup then they ever did with Zlatan Ibrahimovic — the team’s star for more than a decade — by being compact and hard to break down. That helped them win a two-leg playoff against Italy to get to the World Cup, top a group containing Germany, and then beat Switzerland in the round of 16. They began solidly against England in a slow and sloppy start to the game that resembled a pre-season friendly at times, only to be outdone by England’s eighth set-piece goal of its 11 in Russia. The standard of England’s crossing has particularly stood out this tournament, and another brilliant delivery led to the second goal. A chant of “On our way, on our way, to Moscow, on our way” came from England fans in one corner of the Samara Arena. STERLING’S STRUGGLES England forward Raheem Sterling has yet to score at the World Cup from his unusual position as the support striker to Harry Kane, and his finishing let him down against Sweden. Set clear by Jordan Henderson’s long pass over the defense late in the first half, Sterling tried to get around Sweden goalkeeper Robin Olsen but was stopped. Sterling got hold of the loose ball but his shot was deflected over. Sterling’s movement was very good, though, causing Sweden’s slow defense problems throughout. SWEDISH TACTICS Virtually from the kickoff, Sweden sent a long pass forward to tall striker Ola Toivonen and looked for a flick-on. It was a sign of what was to come — direct balls, long throws, pressing — but it didn’t trouble England. The Sweden team got in a huddle after the game and coach Janne Andersson spoke to the players who, like England’s, had gotten further than expected. FOREST FALLS (CBSLA) – A 1,000-acre wildfire which erupted Friday afternoon in the San Bernardino Mountains has forced the evacuation of hundreds of people in the community of Forest Falls. The Valley Fire was reported at around 1:42 p.m. in the area of Valley of the Falls Drive and Highway 38, according to the U.S. Forest Service. (San Bernardino National Forest/Twitter) It spread quickly, growing to 1,000 acres within about six hours. The entire town of Forest Falls, which has about 1,000 people, was ordered to evacuate. There was no containment as of 7 a.m. Saturday, the San Bernardino National Forest reported. No structures have yet been damaged or destroyed. Highway 38 is closed between Bryant Street in Yucaipa to Lake Williams Drive in Big Bear. “And so the fire just started accumulating, and it just started blowing upwards towards where we’re living right now,” resident Don Franklin said. About 500 campers and staff at Forest Homes Ministries, near where the fire sparked, were also forced to evacuate to a church in Yucaipa. “It was safe, there wasn’t a rush, it was more precautionary than anything else,” said Gary Wingerd with Forest Home Ministries. Triple-digit temperatures and low humidity, coupled with steep terrain is making the firefight difficult, the Forest Service said. About 500 firefighters with San Bernardino County Fire, CAL Fire and USFS are battling the blaze. There were no reported injuries. The cause of the fire is under investigation. It’s unclear when residents may be allowed to return to their homes. The South Coast Air Quality Management District has issued a smoke advisory due to the Valley Fire. Areas impacted by the advisory include Big Bear Lake, the San Bernardino Valley, Banning Pass and the central San Bernardino Mountains. Meanwhile, crews were making great progress on the Box Fire burning in the Cajon Pass . As of Saturday, it was holding at 100 acres and was 50 percent contained.

The Gloucester County prosecutor’s office says the blast in Newfield was reported around 6:15 a.m. CBS Philly reports that the blast originated in basement of a house on the 300 block of Oakwood Drive and caused damage to nearby homes, scattering debris over several blocks.
