LOS ANGELES (CBSLA) — Los Angeles police Sunday are reporting that a 13-year-old child has been abducted. CBSLA reporter Chris Holmstrom tweeted a photo of the Maria Roman. Maria was last seen Saturday at 3 p.m. in Van Nuys. Here’s another picture of Maria Roman. pic.twitter.com/meEgOH5S0J — Chris Holmstrom (@ChrisVHolmstrom) July 8, 2018 The Los Angeles Police Dept. is looking for Michael Stewart as a person of interest. Police said Maria and her family befriended Stewart, a transient, several weeks ago and that the man had been helping the family with tasks around the house. Maria left with Stewart Saturday afternoon to run an errand in the family vehicle, described as a 1998 red Nissan Pathfinder. The SUV’s license plate number is 8CHH187. Stewart is described as a 45-year-old male Hispanic, 5 feet 7 inches tall, who weighs 180 pounds. He has some facial hair. Both of their mobile phones were shut off at around 8 p.m., preventing police from pinging the devices. The last text the family received indicated they were having car trouble. This is a breaking news story. More details will be added as soon as they become available.

13-Year-Old Child Abducted In Los Angeles Area, Police Say
LONDON (AP) — A woman who was poisoned by a military-grade nerve agent in southwest England died Sunday, eight days after police think she touched a contaminated item that has not been found. London’s Metropolitan Police force said the case had become a homicide investigation now that 44-year-old Dawn Sturgess had died in a hospital in Salisbury. She and her boyfriend, Charlie Rowley, 45, were admitted June 30 and remained in critical condition. Police said tests showed the pair was exposed to Novichok, the same type of nerve agent used to poison former Russian spy Sergei Skripal and his daughter, Yulia, in Salisbury in March. Police suspect Rowley and Sturgess handled an item from the first attack, which Britain blames on Russia. Moscow denies involvement. Prime Minister Theresa May said she was “appalled and shocked” by Sturgess’s death. “Police and security officials are working urgently to establish the facts of this incident, which is now being treated as murder,” May said. Assistant Commissioner Neil Basu, Britain’s top anti-terrorism police officer, said the death “has only served to strengthen our resolve” to find those responsible. More than 100 police officers have been working to locate a small vial or other container thought to have held the nerve agent that sickened the two. Officials say the search and cleanup operation will take weeks or even month. Counterterrorism police are also studying roughly 1,300 hours of closed circuit television footage in hopes of finding clues about the couple’s activities in the hours before they became violently ill. Detectives want to know where the couple was to get new leads on where the contamination might have occurred. Britain maintains the March attack on the Skripals had been ordered by the Russian government, a charge denied by representatives of Russian President Vladimir Putin. The case led to the expulsion of Russian diplomats from Britain, the United States, and other countries, and tit-for-tat retaliation by Moscow. The new poisoning has frightened some residents who thought an extensive cleanup had removed the threat of any further Novichok exposure. Hospital officials said late Saturday that a number of people including a police officer had sought medical advice in the last week but had been found not to need any treatment. John Glen, the Conservative Party legislator for the region, said the new poisoning has threatened an economic rebound from the slowdown caused by the attack on the Skripals. “We need to establish quickly what they came into contact with and where,” he said. “The sentiment in the city is frustration, we want to get back to normal.” Britain’s interior minister visited Salisbury and nearby Amesbury, where the couple fell ill, on Sunday to reassure residents that the risk to the public remains low. Home Secretary Sajid Javid said the area is open for business and urged people to visit what he called one of the most beautiful parts of the country. (© Copyright 2018 The Associated Press. British Police Open Murder Probe As 1 Of 2 Nerve Agent Victims Dies
BERKELEY HEIGHTS, N.J. (CBSNewYork/AP) — President Donald Trump said Sunday he was still deliberating his decision on a replacement for Supreme Court Justice Anthony Kennedy as his self-imposed deadline for an announcement neared amid furious lobbying and frenzied speculation. “I’m very close to making a final decision. And I believe this person will do a great job,” Trump said as he prepared to return to Washington from a weekend at his New Jersey golf club. Asked by reporters how many people were being considered, the president said: “Let’s say it’s the four people … they’re excellent, every one. You can’t go wrong.” While Trump didn’t name the four, top contenders for the role have included federal appeals judges Brett Kavanaugh, Raymond Kethledge, Amy Coney Barrett and Thomas Hardiman. The White House has been preparing information materials on all four, who were part of a longer list of 25 names vetted by conservative groups. MORE FROM CBS NEWS Trump has not yet communicated a final choice, said a person familiar with his thinking who was not authorized to speak publicly. Trump has spent the weekend discussing his options with allies and will announce his pick at 9 p.m. EDT Monday from the White House. Savoring the suspense, Trump has sought to keep people guessing in the final hours, hoping to replicate his successful announcement of Justice Neil Gorsuch last year. The White House hoped to keep the details under wraps until he rolls out his pick from the East Room. In his conversations over the weekend, Trump expressed renewed interest in Hardiman — the runner-up when Trump nominated Gorsuch, said two people with knowledge of his thinking who were not authorized to speak publicly. But Trump’s final decision remained far from clear, and the president wants to keep the guessing game going. Trump has teased details of his process in recent days, saying Thursday that he was down to four people and “of the four people, I have it down to three or two.” On Saturday, he tweeted that a “Big decision” was coming soon. Republican Sens. Lindsey Graham of South Carolina and Roy Blunt of Missouri said Sunday that they believe any of the top four contenders could get confirmed by the GOP-majority Senate. “I think we can confirm any of the four names being mentioned,” Blunt said on NBC’s “Meet the Press.” ”They’re good judges. I think they’d be fine justices of the Supreme Court. I do think the president has to think about who is the easiest to get confirmed here. And I expect we will do that on sort of a normal timetable, a couple of months.” The president and White House officials involved in the process have fielded calls and messages and have been on the receiving end of public pleas and op-eds for or against specific candidates since Kennedy announced on June 27 that he would retire this summer. Some conservatives have expressed concerns about Kavanaugh — a longtime judge and former clerk for Kennedy — questioning his commitment to social issues like abortion and noting his time serving under President George W. Bush as evidence he is a more establishment choice. But his supporters cite his experience and wide range of legal opinions. Barrett has excited social conservatives since she was questioned about her Roman Catholic faith in her nomination hearings last year, but her brief time on the bench has raised questions. Outside adviser Leonard Leo, currently on leave from the Federalist Society, said on ABC’s “This Week” on Sunday that this kind of jockeying is standard, noting that “every potential nominee before announcement gets concerns expressed about them by people who might ultimately support them.” Leo said: “Brett Kavanaugh and Amy Barrett have a lot of name recognition among supporters of the president, and I think that ultimately when people like them are nominated, you’ll see a lot of folks line up.” Of the other two, he added: “Ray Kethledge and Tom Hardiman, they’re a little bit less known by conservatives. And their records are a little bit lighter. So, it might take some time.” (© Copyright 2018 CBS Broadcasting Inc. All Rights Reserved. The Associated Press contributed to this report.)

NEW YORK (AP) — Nathan Eovaldi took a perfect game into the seventh inning, C.J. Cron hit an early three-run homer and the Tampa Bay Rays routed the New York Mets 9-0 on Sunday. Eovaldi retired his first 18 batters before Brandon Nimmo lined a clean single to right field leading off the seventh. Nimmo was quickly erased on a double play, and Eovaldi faced the minimum through seven innings. The right-hander, who returned this season from his second Tommy John surgery, struck out nine and helped himself with an RBI single. Andrew Kittredge pitched the final two innings for the Rays, giving up a single in the ninth before finishing the two-hitter. Joey Wendle and Jake Bauers also homered for Tampa Bay. It was the second time this season Eovaldi (3-3) made it through six innings without allowing a hit. He threw six hitless innings in May against Oakland for a 6-0 Rays win in his first major league start since 2016. Three times this year Eovaldi has gone six or more innings and given up no more than one hit, tied with Pittsburgh’s Trevor Williams for most in the majors. Cron’s home run gave the Rays a 3-0 lead in the first. He connected on a fastball down the middle from Chris Flexen (0-2) and drove it into the second deck in left field. The homer was Cron’s 17th of the season, setting a career high. Flexen, making his first big league start since last September, struggled with command early. He only lasted three innings on a day when the Mets needed length from their starter ahead of a doubleheader Monday. He gave up five earned runs in three innings, walking three and hitting a batter with a pitch. Eovaldi knocked in a run in the fifth when he beat out an infield single to make it 6-0. A day after putting the leadoff hitter on in seven of nine innings, the listless Mets were shut out for the second consecutive game. They’ve been blanked eight times this season and have gone 14 straight series without winning one. TRAINER’S ROOM Rays: RHP Chaz Roe was placed on the 10-day disabled list with a left meniscus tear. He will have a procedure Friday and is expected to miss at least four to six weeks. RHP Jaime Schultz was recalled from Triple-A. … Gold Glove CF Kevin Kiermaier did not start due to back tightness. … SS Willy Adames sat out for the second consecutive day due to illness. … 2B Daniel Robertson was hit by a pitch on the inside of his right elbow in the first but stayed in the game. … OF Mallex Smith left with leg cramps after running the bases in the fifth. Mets: SS Amed Rosario was given a planned day off. Mets manager Mickey Callaway said Rosario will play both games Monday against Philadelphia. … RHP Noah Syndergaard was scheduled to make a rehab start at Class A Brooklyn, his first game since being placed on the disabled list May 26 with a strained ligament in the index finger on his pitching hand. UP NEXT Rays: RHP Chris Archer (3-4, 4.24 ERA) pitches the series opener Monday night at home against Detroit. It will be Archer’s first start since June 2 when he was placed on the DL for the first time in his career with a left abdominal strain. Tampa Bay manager Kevin Cash said Archer will be limited to “loosely” 70 pitches. Mets: RHP Zack Wheeler (2-6, 4.36 ERA) starts the opener against the Phillies, and RHP Corey Oswalt (0-1, 7.94) goes in the nightcap as the teams make up an April 2 postponement. TORONTO (AP) — Brett Gardner hit a tiebreaking RBI single in the 10th inning and the New York Yankees beat the Toronto Blue Jays 2-1 Sunday for their fourth win in five games. Former Yankees reliever Tyler Clippard (4-3) hit New York’s Greg Bird to begin the 10th, and Tyler Wade came on to pinch run. Austin Romine sacrificed to advance Wade to second, and Gardner followed with a single to left. Chad Green (5-1) pitched one inning for the win and David Robertson finished for his second save in six opportunities. Regular closer Aroldis Chapman, who left Saturday’s game because of a sore left knee, was available but did not pitch. New York struck quickly against Blue Jays rookie left-hander Ryan Borucki. Aaron Judge hit a one-out single in the first and moved to third on Giancarlo Stanton’s double before scoring on Miguel Andujar’s grounder. Toronto catcher Russell Martin made an acrobatic play to end the first, almost mishandling a foul popup by Didi Gregorius but cradling the ball between his glove and chest protector as he fell backwards onto the turf. Making his third career start, Borucki allowed one run and seven hits in seven innings. The left-hander struck out four of the final seven batters he faced. Yankees right-hander Domingo German held the Blue Jays scoreless until Kendrys Morales homered on a 3-2 pitch to begin the sixth, his 10th of the season. Morales became the fifth Cuban player to hit 200 career homers. German allowed one run and four hits in six innings. Blue Jays first base coach Tim Leiper was ejected for arguing in the top of the eighth. Leiper tossed two pieces of equipment onto the field before leaving the dugout. TRAINER’S ROOM Yankees: Manager Aaron Boone said LHP Chapman (left knee) and OF Aaron Hicks (left hamstring) both felt better, one day after each was forced to leave the game with soreness. Hicks did not start Sunday, but could return for Monday’s doubleheader at Baltimore. Blue Jays: Toronto put RHP Rhiner Cruz (right groin) on the 10-day disabled list and recalled LHP Tim Mayza from Triple-A Buffalo. UP NEXT Yankees: LHP CC Sabathia (6-3, 3.02) will start Game 1 of Monday’s doubleheader at Baltimore, and RHP Luis Cessa (0-1, 5.00) will be promoted from Triple-A to start Game 2. Cessa has made five appearances for New York this season, including one start. Baltimore has not named a starter for Game 1. Orioles RHP Yefry Ramirez (0-2, 2.51) will start Game 2. Blue Jays: After a day off Monday, the Blue Jays begin a two-game series at Atlanta on Tuesday. RHP Marcus Stroman (1-6, 6.50) starts for Toronto against Braves RHP Julio Teheran (6-6, 4.47). Stroman lost to the Mets last Wednesday, allowing six runs and six hits in 4 2-3 innings. (© Copyright 2018 The Associated Press. All Rights Reserved. Brett Gardner Drives In Winning RBI As Yankees Top Blue Jays In 10
TEANECK, N.J. (CBSNewYork/AP) — A father who died along with his four daughters in a Delaware highway crash was a native of the Philippines and U. S. Navy veteran who settled in New Jersey to raise his family. A Mass Sunday morning honored 61-year-old Audie Trinidad of Teaneck and his daughters, 20-year-old Kaitlyn, 17-year-old Danna and 13-year-old twins Melissa and Allison. “They were always so happy, never down,” Teaneck resident Fiona Carter said. The family was returning from a trip to Ocean City, Maryland, Friday on U.S. Route 1 when police said a pickup truck crossed the median for unknown reasons and hit the minivan and another car. The girls’ mother, 53-year-old Mary Rose, was rushed to the hospital with serious injuries and is expected to survive. Her aunt attended the Sunday memorial service. “She needs everybody’s prayers,” said Lydia Agas, who had very little sleep after attending a packed vigil Saturday night. Students at Teaneck High School made shirts memorializing Danna, who was a junior. “She was an amazing young lady, National Honors Society, very active,” said Dean of Students Olivia Betances. “All the siblings were.” Audi’s brother Danny Trinidad flew in from Florida. “In the blink of an eye, lost everything,” he said. “My brother’s a nice family man. He loves his family. They all go out during summer break and he takes his kids.” Members of the congregation recall the family attended mass every Sunday morning, always sitting in the same row. “It’s hard to wrap our head around it but we are going to get through this together,” said Brigid Dwyer Carter. Church representatives were also in Delaware on Sunday speaking with Mary Rose, helping her with the complex task of arranging services that will end with five burials. At the family’s home, flowers were left on the lawn as further proof of how much the community cares. Delaware State police say Audi, who was driving, and his wife, who was in the front passenger seat, were wearing seatbelts. The daughters in the back were not. Investigators have yet to figure out what caused the driver of the pickup trick, identified as 44-year-old Alvin S. Hubbard, to cross the median into oncoming traffic. So far, no charges have been filed. A GoFundMe page that has been set up to help the Trinidad family has already raised more than $100,000. (© Copyright 2018 CBS Broadcasting Inc. LOS ANGELES (AP) — A California police department is drawing attention to a 45-year-old murder case by tweeting about the crime as if it just happened, in the voice of the 11-year-old victim. Have you been following #LindasStory ? All of the tweets have been collected in a Moment here: https://t.co/yxv1fLFIZp pic.twitter.com/ubijjtDZkg — Newport Beach Police (@NewportBeachPD) July 7, 2018 The Newport Beach Police Department just south of Los Angeles suspended all its normal Twitter content on Saturday to post an extensive series of tweets about Linda O’Keefe, an 11-year-old girl kidnapped while walking home from school on July 6, 1973. The blue-eyed girl’s body was found the following morning in a nearby nature preserve. The department wrote the powerful tweets as if Linda herself was telling readers about the last hours of her young life. The tweets became a Moment on the social media site and have been gaining attention under #LindasStory. Although police have become more reliant on Twitter and other platforms to spread the word about important cases or public safety information, the dozens of unique tweets telling Linda’s story show how some departments are more fully embracing the power and popularity of such outlets. The tweets begin by telling readers about Linda’s morning and day at summer school, including that her mother told her she couldn’t pick her up and to take the short walk home. “No one is concerned when I don’t come home from school right away. Or not TOO concerned, anyway,” reads one post written in Linda’s voice. “It’s a different time back in 1973, and kids roam the neighborhood on their bikes for hours at a time.” The tweets detail how Linda’s parents and 18-year-old sister began looking for her and calling around to friends and family. They also explain in chilling detail how a bicyclist found her body while he was looking for frogs among cattails. “He sees something small, and pale. My hand. He sees my hand,” the tweet reads. “He screams, trying to rouse me.” Another tweet describes how the man’s friends follow his screams and see her body, as well. “They don’t know who I am, of course … or who I was,” the tweet says. “But they see a young girl’s body, still in my mom’s homemade dress. I’ve been strangled.” In addition to the tweets, the department posted what they say is a new lead , images of the suspected killer and what he might have looked like in 1973 and what he would look like now — all based on DNA evidence used to predict his eye, hair and skin color, and his face shape. In a news release about the series of tweets, the department said the posts were designed to “give Linda a voice once again.” “Years have passed since this heinous murder, but the (department) remains dedicated to justice for Linda, and committed to finding her killer,” the department said.
