NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) — Police have widened the search area for a missing 19-year-old man at a park on Long Island after his parents received some unusual text messages. The desperate family of Louis Germosen has been virtually camped out at Hempstead Lake State Park in West Hempstead since Sunday after receiving some cryptic text messages, telling them this is where they should search for missing son. “I just hope that he just got hurt and somebody has him inside of their house and he’s going to come back alive,” Martha Flores, Louis’ mother, told CBS2’s Carolyn Gusoff. Germosen disappeared on June 28. A flurry of anonymous text messages sent to a cousin on Sunday directed Louis’ mother, father and stepmother to a pond at Hempstead Lake Park with the words “Good luck God bless.” “We’re been searching since we found out,” says Louis Germosen, the teen’s father. “We’ve been following leads. It doesn’t matter who or where – overnight – asking people around, we go to stores, places where he used to frequent.” Adding to their worst fears is the possibility of gang involvement. While his parents say Louis was not a gang member, friends told them he may have last been seen with members of MS-13. “I mean, he’s a good kid. But now we’re just finding out maybe – gang involvement,” says Suzanne Bayer, Louis’ stepmother. “One gang [is] hearing something about MS-13 now. And we’re scared to death.” “We want him to come back we don’t care if he’s got in trouble with anybody,” said Flores. “If he thinks we’re mad at him because he’s been gone too many days, we don’t care we just want to know he’s ok. New york State Park police searched Sunday, along with Nassau water rescue and canine units. “It’s like hell. It’s every parent’s worst nightmare,” said Bayer. “You know, it won’t happen to you, then all of a sudden it happens to you. Its undescribable. I can’t even explain it.”

Desperate Search Underway For Missing Long Island Teen
LONG BEACH (CBSLA) — Wearing a hospital gown and sitting in a wheelchair, a Long Beach man appeared in court for the first time to face charges he killed a fire captain in a botched murder-suicide attempt. Thomas Kim, 77, appeared frail as he faced a judge Monday morning. Neighbors tell KCAL9’s Dave Lopez that Kim was receiving treatment for cancer and a kidney disorder at the time of the deadly incident. Kim is accused of killing Long Beach Fire Capt. David Rosa, 45, as he responded to reports of a fire and explosion at Kim’s apartment complex, Covenant Manor. Prosecutors say Kim set off a firebomb, which triggered the alarm and the building’s sprinkler system, then shot Capt. Rosa, another firefighter and a male resident. The second firefighter survived his gunshot wounds, but the other victim is still hospitalized. Authorities previously said that Kim was trying to kill his upstairs neighbor and himself by setting off the explosion. A handgun and gasoline were recovered from his apartment, police say. Thomas Kim appeared frail during a court appearance Monday morning.(credit: CBS) A massive memorial for Capt. Rosa was held last week in Long Beach, drawing hundreds of firefighters from across America to pay tribute to their fallen comrade. At least six firefighters were present in the courtroom today, all of whom told Dave Lopez they were personal friends of Capt. Rosa. Kim remained silent throughout the hearing and did not enter a plea. He is due back in court August 15.

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork/AP) — Plastic straws seem to be becoming a thing of the past and Starbucks is joining the trend. The coffee chain announced Monday that it would be eliminating all single-use plastic straws by the year 2020. Instead, Starbucks said it will use a strawless lid that it designed, developed, and manufactured. It will become the standard for all iced coffee, tea, and espresso beverages. New strawless lids from Starbucks. (credit: Starbucks Coffee Company) If you’re bent on still using a straw for your drink, don’t worry, Starbucks says it will begin offering straws made out of alternative material for customers upon request. The company cited environmental threats to the ocean and estimated this move will get rid of more than one billion plastic straws per year. Just a week ago, Seattle banned plastic drinking straws and utensils. Similar proposals are being considered in places like New York and San Francisco. The push to ban plastic straws gained traction after a viral video in 2015 showed rescuers removing a plastic straw from a sea turtle’s nose in graphic detail. While plastic drinking straws have become one of the more high-profile environmental issues, they make up only about 4 percent of the plastic trash by number of pieces, and far less by weight. Straws add up to about 2,000 tons of the nearly 9 million tons of plastic waste that ends up in waters around the globe each year. In February, Dunkin’ Donuts said it would eliminate polystyrene foam cups from its stores by 2020. McDonald’s also said this year that it would use only recycled or other environmentally friendly materials for its soda cups, Happy Meal boxes and other packaging by 2025. The strawless lids will begin to appear in Seattle and Vancouver Starbucks this fall, with phased rollouts within the U.S. and Canada next year. A global rollout of the strawless lids will follow, beginning in Europe where they will be used in some stores in France and the Netherlands, as well as in the United Kingdom. Starbucks To Eliminate Plastic Straws By 2020
Ryan Mayer The Midsummer Classic is set for next Tuesday, July 17th in Washington D.C. at the home park of the Washington Nationals. With just over a week before the teams take the field, Major League Baseball announced the results of the voting for both league’s All-Star teams, as well as the starting line-ups for each. There’s still a chance for players to make the teams, as fans can participate in the “Final Vote” on MLB.com all week, with five players given as options for each league. Outside of that final roster spot, there will likely be changes, with players being replaced due to injuries, but for now, here’s what each team looks like . The starters are as follows: American League: C Wilson Ramos, 1B Jose Abreu, 2B Jose Altuve, 3B Jose Ramirez, SS Manny Machado, OF Mookie Betts, OF Mike Trout, OF Aaron Judge, DH J.D. Martinez National League: C Willson Contreras, 1B Freddie Freeman, 2B Javier Baez, 3B Nolan Arenado, SS Brandon Crawford, OF Nick Markakis, OF Matt Kemp, OF Bryce Harper The newest name to the All-Star experience is outfielder Nick Markakis. Markakis has been in the league for 13 seasons now (nine with Baltimore, four in Atlanta) but had never been selected to an All-Star team. This season, with the Braves, it would be hard to argue for his exclusion considering he’s hitting .322/.389/.490 with 10 homers and 59 RBI in 89 games. The most notable snubs? Tampa Bay Rays pitcher Blake Snell and Seattle Mariners ace James Paxton. Snell has posted a 12-4 record with a 2.09 ERA across 19 starts in the first half for the Rays, while Paxton is 8-3 with a 3.49 ERA in 19 starts of his own. While the All-Star roster reveal has gotten most of the spotlight in the past day, rumblings out of Baltimore about a potential Manny Machado trade have been building since late last week. According to multiple reports, seven teams have made offers to the Orioles for the 26-year-old shortstop. The consensus in terms of the appeal of those trade offers seems to be: Dodgers, Brewers, Diamondbacks, Phillies, Braves, Indians and Cubs. The Dodgers and Brewers are the perceived frontrunners in the race to secure Machado’s services for the second half of the season. Machado has been a third baseman for much of his career before moving to shortstop with the O’s this season. Entering play on Monday, he’s hitting .313/.382/.560 with 21 homers and 60 RBI in 88 games. His contract is up at season’s end, meaning any team that acquires him will only have half a season to try and convince him to stay, otherwise he will hit the free-agent market this winter. HOLLYWOOD (CBSLA) — French actress Emmanuelle Seigner blasted an invitation to join the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences as “offensive” and criticized the body for the way it has treated her husband, film director Roman Polanski. The group behind the Academy Awards recently touted its largest and most diverse class of invitees from all aspects of filmmaking. The 2018 class, 49 percent female and 38 percent people of color, is the academy’s latest move to diversify its white male-dominant voting membership. Seigner is best known in the U.S. for her work in Julian Schnabel’s “The Diving Bell and the Butterfly.” She responded to the academy’s invitation with a letter to the French newspaper Le Journal du Dimanche, blasting “the insufferable hypocrisy” in their dealings with Polanski, according to the Los Angeles Times. The celebrated director, known for films like “Rosemary’s Baby,” and winner of the 2003 Oscar for best director for “The Pianist,” was expelled from the academy, along with Bill Cosby, “in accordance with the organization’s Standards of Conduct.” The expulsion comes decades after Polanski fled the U.S. in 1978, before he could be sentenced for unlawful sexual intercourse with a minor, a charge to which he pleaded guilty. In her letter, Seigner criticized the way the Academy treated Polanski – expelling him after awarding him an Oscar for “The Pianist,” a move she called “a curious case of amnesia!” Citing Polanski’s work directing “unforgettable female characters,” Seigner argued that artists aren’t exempt from justice, “but it should be the same justice that exists for all, not a justice that goes back on its word and violates its own principles. That was the case in Los Angeles in 1977, when his first confinement in prison was supposed to be his punishment. Today, Roman has served more than the maximum sentence for the offence committed.” Seigner and Polanski have been married since 1989. (© Copyright 2018 CBS Broadcasting Inc. All Rights Reserved. Starbucks plans to stop offering plastic straws by 2020
LONDON (AP) — British Prime Minister Theresa May dug in her heels Monday after the resignation of two top government ministers over Brexit negotiations whipped up a storm that threatened to topple her fragile minority government Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson quit with a resignation letter accusing May of flying “white flags” of surrender in negotiations with the European Union. He said “the Brexit dream is dying, suffocated by needless self doubt ” Johnson followed Brexit Secretary David Davis out the door as a hard-won government consensus on future trade ties with the bloc disintegrated less than three days after it was forged, and nine months before Britain is due to leave the EU. Davis resigned late Sunday, saying May’s plan to maintain close trade and regulatory ties with the EU gave “too much away, too easily.” If Davis’s resignation rattled May, Johnson’s shook the foundations of her government. The tousle-headed blond Johnson is one of Britain’s best-known politicians, and one of the most prominent advocates for Brexit. Some euroskeptic lawmakers dream of replacing May with a staunch Brexiteer such as Johnson, a populist, polarizing figure who has never made a secret of his ambition to be prime minister. With Britain due to leave the currently 28-nation bloc on March 29, 2019, EU officials have warned Britain repeatedly that time is running out to seal a deal spelling out the terms of the divorce and a post-split relationship. Minutes after Johnson quit, May defended her Brexit plan to lawmakers in the House of Commons, with Johnson absent from his usual place on the Conservative front bench. She said she and the two departed ministers “do not agree about the best way of delivering our shared commitment to honoring the result of the referendum” in which U.K. voters opted to leave the EU. May’s plan seeks to keep the U.K. and the EU in a free-trade zone for goods, and commits Britain to maintaining the same rules as the bloc for goods and agricultural products. May said the plan would deliver frictionless trade with Europe and was the “only way to avoid a hard border” between the U.K.’s Northern Ireland and EU member Ireland. Britain and the EU agree there must be no tariffs and immigration checks along the currently invisible frontier, but working out how to achieve that has been a major stumbling block in negotiations. Rebuffing claims that her proposals make too many concessions to the EU, May said her “smooth and orderly Brexit” would leave Britain free to make its own laws and trade deals. The resignations came just days after May announced she had finally united her quarrelsome government behind a plan for a divorce deal with the EU. Government unity began to fray within hours of Friday’s announcement. Brexit-supporting lawmakers were angered by the proposals, saying they would keep Britain tethered to the bloc and unable to change its rules to strike new trade deals around the world. They also argued that the proposals breach several of the “red lines” the government had set out, including a commitment to leave the EU’s tariff-free customs union. In his resignation letter, Davis said the “`common rule book policy hands control of large swathes of our economy to the EU and is certainly not returning control of our laws in any real sense.” Johnson said in his letter that May’s plan to keep close economic ties with the bloc means Britain is heading for a “semi Brexit” that would leave Britain with the “status of a colony” of the EU. Britain and the EU hope to reach broad agreement by October so the national parliaments of the remaining countries can ratify a deal before Britain leaves. The timetable increasingly looks overly optimistic, and EU frustration with British division and chaos is growing. European Council President Donald Tusk said Monday that “the mess caused by Brexit is the biggest problem in the history of EU-UK relations and it is still very far from being resolved.” Opposition Labour Party leader Jeremy Corbyn said the government was incapable of delivering Brexit. “How can anyone have faith in the prime minister getting a good deal with 27 European Union governments when she can’t even broker a deal within her own Cabinet?” he asked. May has hung on to power longer than many expected after she lost her majority in a June 2017 snap election that she had called in hopes of strengthening her hand in Brexit talks. The fear among May’s allies is that more resignations may follow. Steve Baker, a junior Brexit minister, resigned along with Davis. May appointed staunchly pro-Brexit lawmaker Dominic Raab as the country’s new Brexit secretary. She did not immediately name a replacement for Johnson. The loss of two senior ministers and the anger among Brexit-supporting backbench lawmakers makes May’s position as leader increasingly tenuous. Davis insisted he did not want his resignation to become a rallying cry for May’s ouster. “I like Theresa May, I think she’s a good prime minister,” Davis said. But other pro-Brexit lawmakers were furious at what they saw as a sell-out of the clean Brexit they desire. Euroskeptic Conservative lawmaker Peter Bone said party activists felt “betrayed” by the government plan. Under Conservative Party rules, a confidence vote in a leader can be triggered if 48 Conservative lawmakers write a letter requesting one. May was asked by an opposition lawmaker Monday whether she would contest a vote of confidence rather than resign. “Nice try,” she said with a touch of bravado. “But I’m getting on with delivering what the British people want.” (© Copyright 2018 The Associated Press.
