(CNN)- Wildlife rangers in northern Australia captured a massive 600 kilogram (1,300 pound) crocodile after first spotting it nearly a decade ago. The crocodile, estimated to be more than 60 years old, was found lurking near a boat ramp in the Katherine River. At 4.71 meters (15.45 feet), the croc is the longest-ever trapped in the region. The previous record holder was a 4.6 meter-long croc captured in 2011. Though the average saltwater crocodile is about 5 meters (17 feet) long, according to National Geographic, captures of this size are rare, park authorities said. Wildlife officials have been searching for the crocodile since it was first spotted in 2010, according to Tracey Duldig, the acting director of Wildlife Operations in the Northern Territory. They sought to capture and isolate it so in order to prevent it from “interacting with humans.” The reptile will now “be taken to a croc farm in the Katherine region,” she said. Saltwater crocodiles, affectionately referred to as salties, can be spotted throughout the Northern Territory. So far this year, 187 of them have been captured in the Top End — the northernmost part of the Northern Territory, according to the Northern Territory Parks and Wildlife website, which advises visitors to be “crocwise.” “Croc danger is real. Do not become complacent or risk your life,” it warns.

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) – An author is alleging sexual assault accusations against Def Jam Records co-founder Russell Simmons in an online essay posted nearly three decades later. Alexia Norton Jones said in an article on Variety.com she went on a date with the hip hop mogul in November 1990 that ended with an assault at Simmons’ apartment in downtown Manhattan. Jones, a 31-year-old model and actress at the time of the alleged attack, is the granddaughter of late book publisher W.W. Norton. The accusations are the latest in a string of reports from more than a dozen women accusing Simmons of sexual assault or rape, according to reports by The Los Angeles Times and The New York Times . Simmons denied wrongdoing in the case of Jones and other complaints against him. Amid the allegations, he stepped down from his companies in November. “I’m deeply saddened by this story from Alexia,” Simmons told Variety in a statement posted on the magazine’s website. “At no time did she share these feelings about her first sexual encounter with me, which took place roughly 28 years ago. I have taken multiple lie detector tests that affirm I never sexually assaulted anyone. Alexia and I dated, were intimate and attended multiple events together after she alleges the incident occurred in 1990.” Earlier this year, Jennifer Jarosik filed a lawsuit against Simmons , accusing him of raping her. She says she approached Simmons to be interviewed and to help her produce and finance a film. In December 2017 , the NYPD announced that it had opened a preliminary investigation into allegations of sexual misconduct by Simmons – a day after three women told the New York Times that Simmons raped them .

AUSTRALIA (CBS Local) – Scientists in Australia say they’ve discovered the oldest color found in nature: bright pink . Researchers from the Australian National University (ANU) say they studied samples of rocks taken from deep beneath the Sahara desert and crushed the billion-year-old shale deposits down to unlock their true colors. “The bright pink pigments are the molecular fossils of chlorophyll that were produced by ancient photosynthetic organisms inhabiting an ancient ocean that has long since vanished,” said Dr. Nur Gueneli from the ANU Research School of Earth Sciences. The pink fossils are about 600 million years older than any other ancient pigments found in nature. Scientists added that the microscopic lifeforms may have been the original bottom of the food chain a billion years ago, before animals existed on Earth.

BURBANK (CBSLA) – Studio giant Warner Bros. this week disclosed that it is considering fully financing a $100 million aerial tram from its lot in Burbank to the famed Hollywood Sign in Griffith Park. An artist rendering of a proposed tram which would run from Warner Bros. in Burbank, Calif., to the Hollywood Sign in Griffith Park. July 2018. (Warner Bros.) The studio met with Los Angeles city officials Monday to inform them of its proposal to fund a one-mile tram, which would go from its parking lot up to Mount Lee, where the sign is located, the Los Angeles Times reports. A statement released by Warner Bros. to CBS2 Tuesday read, in part: “The concept of an aerial tram as a solution is one that been suggested in the past and was most recently highlighted as a potential solution in the comprehensive strategies report by Dixon Resources Unlimited.” The tram, which Warner Bros. is calling the Hollywood Skyway, would take about six minutes one-way. “Because of our property on Forest Lawn Drive, Warner Bros. has one of the shortest and most direct routes to the back of the Hollywood Sign,” the company said. The popularity of the Hollywood Sign has created major headaches for residents in the area as hundreds of thousands of tourists descend on Griffith Park every year. In January, transportation consulting firm Dixon Resources Unlimited released a comprehensive report on several possible solutions to ease traffic congestion and improve tourist access to the sign. It included creating an aerial tram, constructing a second Hollywood Sign on the other side of the mountain, and developing a shuttle service up Beachwood Canyon. This third option was in response to the city’s controversial closure , in April of 2017, of the Beachwood Drive gate to the Hollyridge Trail, one of the main access points to the Hollywood Sign. The tram would not require any taxpayer dollars. Warner Bros. would entirely pay for its “design, construction, operation and maintenance.” Warner Bros. did not confirm a timeline for the project. “We are in the early stages of work on this project and we are embarking on a ‘listening tour’ of city departments, neighborhood residents and environmental groups,” Warner Bros. said in its statement. “We want feedback from a diverse cross-section of stakeholders as a part of the design process.” The Hollywood sign was originally built in 1923 to read “Hollywoodland” to advertise a local real estate development.
