ST. PETERSBURG, Russia (AP) — France is back in the World Cup final for the first time since Zinedine Zidane’s headbutt in 2006. Twelve years after one of soccer’s most infamous moments, Samuel Umtiti used his head to score from a corner kick in the 51st minute and earn France a 1-0 victory over Belgium on Tuesday in the first of the all-European semifinals. The French players danced on the field after the final whistle and shook the hand of Thierry Henry, who helped Les Bleus win the World Cup in 1998 and is now Belgium’s assistant coach. France will face either Croatia or England in the final on Sunday in Moscow. Those two teams play in the other semifinal match on Wednesday, also in Moscow. France goalkeeper Hugo Lloris produced a great save in each half, denying the potent Belgian attack of Eden Hazard, Kevin De Bruyne and Romelu Lukaku the chance to advance the country to its first major final. Belgium reached the quarterfinals at the 2014 World Cup and the European Championship in 2016 but has yet to fulfil its lofty expectations. The world now gets to see France’s luxury squad, collectively valued in excess of $1 billion and headlined by teenage sensation Kylian Mbappe, in another major final. Two years ago at home, the French surprisingly lost to Portugal 1-0 in the Euro 2016 title match. In 2006, they were beaten in a penalty shootout by Italy in a World Cup final that was overshadowed by Zidane headbutting opposing player Marco Materazzi in the chest in extra time. Zidane was sent off in what was his final match. In a tournament dominated by goals from set pieces, France’s took the lead from a corner. Antoine Griezmann curled in the ball from the right and Umtiti got in front of tall Belgium midfielder Marouane Fellaini to knock in his header at the near post. Up in the corporate seats, French President Emmanuel Macron reacted to the goal by shaking the hand of King Philippe of Belgium as FIFA president Gianni Infantino watched on between them. The goal capped an impressive display by Umtiti, who helped to shut out the most productive attack in the World Cup with 14 goals, and meant three defenders have now scored on France’s route to the final. Benjamin Pavard and Raphael Varane scored in previous matches. In search of the equalizer, Belgium repeatedly sent over crosses from both wings but Umtiti and Varane, both center backs, used their bodies cleverly to hold off Fellaini and Lukaku. France coach Didier Deschamps has faced some criticism for being too pragmatic and functional despite having so many stars in his squad, but the organization of the team was superb and Belgium was largely restricted to only minor chances that were kept out by the flying Lloris. Deschamps now has the chance to become the third person to win the World Cup as a player and a coach, after Germany great Franz Beckenbauer and Brazil’s Mario Zagallo. As France captain, Deschamps won soccer’s most prized trophy in 1998. (© Copyright 2018 The Associated Press. All Rights Reserved. NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) — An investigation was underway Tuesday after police say a 67-year-old woman was shot in the face while waiting at a bus stop on Staten Island. Chopper 2 was live over the scene after police say shots rang out around Jersey Street in the St. George section around 12:30 p.m. Investigators canvassed the area after police discovered the victim lying unconscious with a gunshot wound to her face. The victim’s niece says her aunt, Frances Williams, was waiting at the stop to go to her job as a home care aid when she was shot. “Somebody called me so I came up the street to find out what was going on with my aunt and they said she’s shot in the neck and she’s in critical condition,” Priscilla Lewis said. It wasn’t immediately clear why Williams was shot, or what circumstances led up to the shooting.

NORTH CASTLE. N.Y. (CBSNewYork) — Many in the town of North Castle say they’d rather deal with parking problems than a collapsing cliff. A popular Ralph’s Italian Ices is looking to buy a plot of land next door to expand their parking lot, but those who live by fear it will cause issues. “I spent the last eight years taking care of my parents, fighting to keep them at home, safe and as healthy as possible,” said resident Nora Kanze-Manuele. Now Manuele is fighting for the safety of her childhood home in North Castle. She says the backyard has naturally been caving in for years, but it’s a possible man made problem she is trying to avoid. One that is right behind her home: the new Ralph’s Italian Ices of North Broadway. “Many us have lived a long time in this neighborhood and then for someone to come in here for about a year and all of a sudden, create such havoc,” said Manuele. Manuele and her neighbors say if the shop owner buys the plot of land next door to the business to make it a parking lot, and hammers away at the large hill that separates their homes and the establishment, it could cave in. Just like the office on the other side of the property that had to stop construction. “There wasn’t enough parking, they started to dig into the cliff and the cliff came down,” explained Manuele. “It seems like it is going to erode,” said another resident, Gail Lombardi Norris. Someone who would be greatly impacted by this sale is another neighbor Betty Sanchirco. “For them to take that piece of property and have the potential owner cut into the back of my property, it would leave the edge of my backyard on a cliff,” said Sanchirco. Her backyard is right next to the land for sale, but we spoke to the owner of Ralph’s who right now says there is nothing to fear. “I really don’t know what they are worried about, there is so much there,” said owner Scott Rosenberg. The owner believes there is plenty of room between the houses and the land for sale. Promising he will even keep the popular pedestrian path that would be on his new land. “You have a geotech engineer to certify the structure, the mountain, to make sure it’s safe,” said Rosenberg. “Make sure it’s all in accordance to the town and city.” Home owners who live up high are thinking low of this business’s possible expansion which the city says he has the right to do. There will be a town hall meeting tomorrow where the owner of Ralph’s will be speaking with local leaders about the sale. If it goes well, he says he will submit a plan to them soon.

UNION, N.J. (CBSNewYork) – NFL training camps open in just over two weeks. Many young players in the area are already putting on the pads in these 90-degree temperatures. So what better player to give advice on dealing with the conditions than two-time Super Bowl MVP Eli Manning ? As CBS2’s Otis Livingston reported, hydration was the theme Tuesday as Manning participated in the Offense-Defense Youth Football Camp on behalf of the Gatorade Beat the Heat program. The 14-year NFL veteran passed on some sage advice. “I know I have a better plan to attack it now than when I was 14 years old. In between two-a-days, I would go for a swim and drink a soda. Now, it’s wake up and start hydrating right from the get go,” he said. The New York Giants are coming off a terrible 2-14 season, where Manning’s 210 game streak as starting quarterback came to an abrupt end. Now, they have a new general manager, coach and players, and Manning’s looking forward to hitting the restart button. “That’s the great thing about football is what you did last year doesn’t matter. Good or bad, it’s all about what you can do this year. (I’m) excited about the guys we have, the new coaches. (I’ve) been texting with the guys, and everybody’s excited to get rolling and see what we can do this year,” he said. Manning isn’t alone. His talented teammates on the offense, led by Odell Beckham Jr., are so excited they put together a music video on Instagram documenting their recent shirtless workouts. “I know they’ll have to make some adjustments. We do practice with our shirts on with the Giants, so I know the friction. They’ll have to make an adjustment the first few weeks, so it might be something new for them and take some time to get used to that,” said Manning. After he spoke to the kids Tuesday at Kean University, he even participated in the team portion of drills and played quarterback, of course. He looked in mid-season form, tossing his touchdown pass to a lucky camper. “I was like, I better catch this ball,” camper Justin Valentin said. “Speechless.”
