NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) – A sweet deal to score children fuzzy new friends went wrong Thursday when overwhelmed Build-A-Bear Workshop stores across the nation shut down a special promotion halfway through the day, leaving thousands of children and parents disappointed. The promotion priced the company’s stuffed animals equal to each child’s age, starting at $1. Customer response went far beyond expectations. Huge lines were reported outside stores in Boston , San Francisco, Seattle, Chicago and New York. At around 1:45 p.m., the company tweeted that all stores would stop taking new orders today. “Urgent Alert: Per local authorities, we cannot accept additional Guests at our locations due to crowd safety concerns. We have closed lines in our stores. Build-A-Bear Promotion Goes Out Of Control As Crowds Mob Stores
WASHINGTON (CBSNewYork/AP) – Yelling and chaos erupted at a House Judiciary Committee hearing Thursday as Republican lawmakers challenged FBI agent Peter Strzok over his text message saying “we’ll stop” the election of Donald Trump. Strzok testified publicly for the first time since being removed from special counsel Robert Mueller ‘s team, telling lawmakers that texts he traded with FBI lawyer Lisa Page in the run-up to the 2016 presidential election reflected personal views that he never once acted on. The interaction with Page fueled GOP suspicions of partisan bias over the course of the 2016 election and Hillary Clinton email investigatio n. “At no time, in any of those texts, did those personal beliefs ever enter into the realm of any action I took,” Strzok said. Strzok also said he had been advised not to answer specific questions about the on-going investigation into Russian election interference . That set off a testy back and forth between Democratic Rep. Jerrold Nadler of New York and Republican Chairman Bob Goodlatte of Virginia: Goodlatte: “Mr. Strzok, please be advised that you can either comply with the committee’s directive to answer the question, or refuse to do so. The latter of which will place you at risk of a contempt citation and potential criminal liability. Do you understand that?” Nadler: “Point of order Mr. Chairman.” Goodlatte: “The question is directed at the witness.” Nadler: “I have a point of order before he answers the question.” Goodlatte: “The point of order is not well taken.” Nadler: “You don’t know what the point of order is, you can’t say it’s not well taken.” Goodlatte: “The point of order, the witness will answer the question.” Nadler: “Mr. Chairman, I raise my point of order and I insist on it.” The Justice Department’s inspector general has criticized Strzok and Page for creating the appearance of impropriety through the texts. But the report said it found no evidence of political bias in the FBI’s decision not to pursue criminal charges against Clinton. SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. (CBS Local) – A judge has ruled that hundreds of lawsuits claiming “Roundup” weed killer causes cancer can proceed to the next phase in court. U.S. District Judge Vince Chhabria said on July 10 that cancer victims and their families could present expert testimony that links the chemical to non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma. The lawsuits filed against Roundup maker, Monsanto, claims the agricultural biotech company knew about the cancer risk and failed to warn customers. Chhabria called evidence alleging Roundup ingredient glyphosate is a cause of Hodgkin’s lymphoma “rather weak”, however the judge added that the testimony of three experts could not be dismissed as “junk science.” Judge Chhabria is reportedly presiding over more than 400 lawsuits in state and federal court filed against Monsanto. “We will continue to defend these lawsuits with robust evidence that proves there is absolutely no connection between glyphosate and cancer,” Monsanto Vice President Scott Partridge said in a statement obtained by WebMD . “We have sympathy for anyone suffering from cancer, but the science clearly shows that glyphosate was not the cause.” “We look forward to taking the next step – getting our clients their day in court,” Michael Baum, an attorney for the plaintiffs, said via the Associated Press.

Judge Allows Lawsuits Claiming Weed Killer Causes Cancer To Proceed
BALTIMORE (AP/CBS Local) — Maryland’s highest court will review a decision to reopen a high-profile case for a man whose murder conviction was chronicled in the hit podcast “Serial.” Earlier this year, the Maryland Court of Special Appeals ordered a new trial for Adnan Syed, upholding a 2016 lower court ruling. But the state’s top court has now agreed to consider whether Syed’s murder conviction should be reinstated. A Thursday court document says the case will be set for argument during a December session. Syed was convicted in 2000 of killing his high-school sweetheart. His story was widely publicized in the 2014 “Serial” podcast, which cast doubt on his guilt and inspired armchair investigators. A lower-court judge vacated Syed’s conviction in 2016. Prosecutors appealed to Maryland’s intermediate appeals court, which granted a new trial. ODESSA, Fla. (CBS Local)– Dave Warden III has an unfortunate story that he’ll be telling for a long time thanks to his Samsung phone. The Florida man claims his phone began to start smoking on the kitchen counter as he was finishing up dinner. “There was popping, cracking, tingling.” Warden said. Warden’s problems only got worse, as the smoke quickly turned into flames. The Samsung phone owner then attempted to throw the phone in the sink, but missed the sink altogether. Warden said he was left with burns on his hands from the incident. “It burned for so long that we actually had enough time to grab my phone and actually get video of it burning up.” A spokesperson from Samsung released the following statement about Mr. Warden’s situation. “Samsung takes customer safety very seriously and we stand behind the quality of the millions of Galaxy devices in use in the United States. We have not received any reports of similar incidents involving a Galaxy S9 device and we have reached out to Mr. Warden to learn more about the specifics behind this experience and to resolve the matter. We are aware that this device was purchased through a non-authorized third-party and we encourage consumers to always purchase Samsung products from one of our authorized retailers or carriers to ensure the product continues to meet Samsung’s high quality and safety standards. Until Samsung is able to thoroughly examine any unit, it is impossible to determine the true cause of an incident. Mobile phones are complex products and there are many factors that could contribute to their malfunction. Any customer who has questions about a Samsung product should contact us directly at 1-800-SAMSUNG.” Samsung has had several issues over the years with phone bursting into flames. Two years ago , a Samsung phone went up in flames as a 6-year-old from New York was playing games on it. The boy suffered first-degree burns and part of his house was damaged during the incident.

LANCASTER (CBSLA) — Will neckties become verboten in the city of Lancaster? Lancaster Mayor R. Rex Parris is expected at this week’s council meeting to ask the city attorney to look into the feasibility of forbidding city employers from requiring workers to wear neckties to work. As part of his proposal, Parris cited a new study that suggests wearing neckties may lower blood flow to the brain, potentially curbing creativity and analytical thinking. The study published in the journal Neuroradiology argues that restricting circulation by such an amount — researchers say around 7.5 percent on average — could be deadly for someone with high blood pressure. “I spend a lot of hours every week on an elliptical or a bike just to increase blood flow to my brain, and it turns out every morning when I put on a tie I’m diminishing it,” he said. Lancaster Mayor Rex Parris says he will continue to wear neckties as a litigator, but he wants to ease the rules for city employers. But Parris – who is himself a well-known litigator – said he continues to wear neckties because most courts require such attire in the courtroom. Minneapolis, Minn. (CBS Local) – Teachers are getting excited about a sale happening at Target just for them. Target answered a question on Twitter Thursday morning confirming the “Teacher Prep Event” starts July 15. Pictures had been shared on social media advertising the sale running from July 15-21. The link listed in the ad initially didn’t work; however, by Wednesday afternoon it was an active link- but no information was on the site. As of Thursday morning the link still doesn’t have any information- but Target did say the site will go live on July 15. The advertisement says: “For the first time ever, we’re giving teachers a special 15% off deal on select classroom supplies in-store and online during our Teacher Prep Event July 15-21.” SEE: Pay Based On Your Age At Build-A-Bear On Thursday As for what is part of the rumored deal: writing supplies, notebooks, folders, binders, arts & crafts, storage, organization, disinfecting wipes, facial tissue, hand sanitizer, and food storage bags. According to the sign, teachers will need to verify their status on Target’s website by providing a name, email, school, and school zip code. Once verified, teachers will get a one-time-use promo code for online purchases and a coupon to use in-store.
