CLEVELAND (AP) — Indians manager Terry Francona trusted Corey Kluber to keep the Yankees from scoring. At this point, he has no better option. New York Yankees’ Aaron Hicks hits an RBI double during the eighth inning to take the lead against the Cleveland Indians at Progressive Field on July 12, 2018. (Photo by Jason Miller/Getty Images) Kluber gave up a go-ahead double to Aaron Hicks with one out in the eighth inning as New York scored late against Cleveland’s ace and downed the Indians 7-4 on Thursday night in the Yankees’ first visit to Progressive Field since last year’s AL playoffs. After fouling a pitch off his foot, Hicks drove a 3-2 delivery from Kluber (12-5) to deep center field, scoring Didi Gregorius easily from first base when the ball one-hopped the wall. Although Kluber was at 100 pitches through seven innings, Francona elected to stick with him in the eighth rather than turn things over to his shaky bullpen, which has the league’s highest ERA and is missing Andrew Miller. “I thought he was fine,” Francona said of Kluber. “And he was at what, 100? And I thought he was throwing the ball well. I thought he was in command of what he was doing.” The Yankees added another run in the inning on Greg Bird’s sacrifice fly off Oliver Perez. Brett Gardner homered twice and Gregorius also connected for the Yankees, who overcame a 2-0 deficit and won the Division Series by beating Kluber in Game 5 last October. New York is 30 games over .500 for the first time this season, and for the first time before the All-Star break since 1998, when it won the World Series. Yankees All-Star ace Luis Severino only pitched five innings, but manager Aaron Boone got four hitless innings from Adam Warren, David Robertson (6-3), Dellin Betances and closer Aroldis Chapman, who got three outs for his 25th save — in his first appearance since Saturday because of a sore left knee. “Every win’s a good win,” Boone said. “That was a good win up against a great pitcher. Up and down the lineup we had big at-bats in big spots. On a night when Sevy didn’t have his best, the rest of the guys were able to come through in a big way.” Jose Ramirez and Edwin Encarnacion homered off Severino, who was denied his major league-leading 15th win. The marquee matchup between Kluber and Severino — two of baseball’s top pitchers — had everyone excited. “This is one of those games where if I wasn’t a manager, I’d come watch the game,” Francona quipped beforehand. But neither Kluber nor Severino brought their ‘A’ game. The All-Stars each gave up two homers, both were hit harder than expected and they were forced to pitch out of trouble throughout their stints. Severino allowed four runs and nine hits in five innings and recorded just one strikeout, his fewest since 2016. “We did a great job against Severino. He’s got exceptional stuff,” Francona said. “We scored. We made him throw pitches. We got him out after five, but their bullpen is also exceptional. They brought in four guys that are pretty good and they kind of did a number on us.” Kluber, who lost the decisive Game 5 to the Yankees last October while battling a stiff lower back, was at 100 pitches to start the eighth, but Francona stuck with him anyway. The right-hander walked Gregorius on four pitches to start the inning and then gave up the double to Hicks, who was just 3 for 25 in his career against the two-time Cy Young Award winner. “I was looking for a heater,” Hicks said. “I was looking for something middle-in I could drive. I got a lot of changeups. I was swinging and missing at it a lot. The pitch before that I got a heater that I just missed. I think that’s what got me a changeup in that situation. I just wanted to stay on the ball.” WHAT A RELIEF Since June 1, New York’s relievers have a 1.64 ERA — the lowest in the majors and a full run better than second-place Houston (2.70). RAM TOUGH Ramirez connected for his fourth homer in three games to tie it 4-all in the fifth. The 25-year-old has 28 homers, breaking Albert Belle’s club record for the most before the All-Star break. Ramirez is also tied with Boston’s J.D. Martinez for the major league lead. TRAINER’S ROOM Yankees: C Gary Sanchez (strained right groin) could begin a minor league rehab assignment Sunday. Sanchez, who has been out since June 25, has been doing hitting, catching and agility drills. Indians: Miller will pitch batting practice to hitters Saturday at Double-A Akron, the next step in his comeback from knee inflammation that has sidelined the elite reliever since May 26. Miller said he expects to pitch in a “handful of minor league games” before he’s activated. UP NEXT A pair of rookies square off as Cleveland’s Shane Bieber (4-1) gets his first career start against the Yankees — or any AL East team — on Friday versus New York’s Domingo German (2-4), who had a season-high 10 strikeouts on June 14 against Tampa Bay. CARSON (CBSLA) — Have you seen Julio Cesar Roman? Carson Station Detectives say Roman is the suspect in a nasty and unprovoked attack on a convenience store clerk last month. Officials say Roman walked into a store in the 900 block of West Sepulveda Boulevard in Carson around 6 a.m. on Saturday, June 16. They say he attacked clerk Darlecia D’Andrade after making a purchase and asking to use the bathroom. Officials said he slashed her repeatedly in the face and abdomen with an unknown object. Ramon then ran out of the store, hopped into a car and went southbound on Vermont Ave. Authorities still don’t have a motive for the attack. Roman is described as Latino, 23-years-old, 5 feet 5 inches tall and 150 pounds. He has brown hair, and hazel eyes. When last seen, Roman was wearing a black and green hat with a message about loving “weed,” a red T-shirt, and black pants. RELATED LINK: Caught On Tape — Suspect Ambushes, Repeatedly Stabs Gas Station Clerk The red four-door sedan he drove away in has been located. A felony arrest warrant has been issued. NEW YORK (AP) — Max Scherzer isn’t going to begin a debate over who should start the All-Star Game for the National League. He’s content to let others sort that out while he keeps winning. Scherzer made a final pitch to start the Midsummer Classic on his own mound, Anthony Rendon hit two homers and Bryce Harper also connected, leading the Washington Nationals over the New York Mets 5-4 Thursday night. Scherzer (12-5) didn’t dominate over his seven innings, but managed to tie Philadelphia’s Aaron Nola for the NL lead in wins. He struck out five, boosting his league-leading total to 182. Washington Nationals’ Max Scherzer pitches against the New York Mets during their game at Citi Field on July 12, 2018. (Photo by Al Bello/Getty Images) His first half assessment? “Pretty good,” he said. “I’ve been pretty consistent, giving the team a chance to win.” The three-time Cy Young Award winner exited with a 2.41 ERA, and perfectly lined up to pitch on regular rest next Tuesday night in the All-Star Game at Nationals Park. Scherzer deflected a question on whether he should get the start, saying it was “an All-Star question” that he’d talk about at the right time. Before the game, Nationals manager Dave Martinez was more definitive. “I don’t want to be biased,” he said, “but Max Scherzer, yeah, of course.” Fans at Citi Field would rather see Mets ace Jacob deGrom make the start — he tops the majors with a 1.68 ERA, but is just 5-4 in 19 starts because of poor run support. “I know how good he is,” Scherzer said. “He’s having a great year.” Washington won for just the sixth time in 17 games and nudged back over .500 at 47-46. The Mets fell to 37-54, their most losses before the All-Star Game since dropping 60 in 1993. Scherzer gave up three runs and five hits, including home runs by nemesis Jose Bautista and Kevin Plawecki. Rendon hit a two-run homer off Steven Matz (4-7) in the first and added a solo drive in the third. His fourth career multihomer performance gave him six homers in 13 games. Matz was pulled after striking out Juan Soto to start the seventh, and left with a 3.38 ERA. “He’s just maturing as an overall major league pitcher. And his stuff has gotten better,” manager Mickey Callaway said. “He’s been fantastic for us.” Rendon singled in the seventh off Tim Peterson and then Harper, already assured a starting spot in the All-Star outfield, greeted lefty Jerry Blevins with his 23rd homer to make it 5-2. Bautista hit an RBI single in the first and a solo homer in the fourth. He is 11 for 23 lifetime against Scherzer with two home runs and four doubles. Plawecki homered in the seventh off the Washington ace. Kelvin Herrera relieved to begin the eighth and gave up a solo homer to Asdrubal Cabrera. Ryan Madson closed for his fourth save. MORE MAX Scherzer beat out an infield single for his 11th hit, tied with Colorado’s German Marquez for most among pitchers this year. Scherzer also put down his first sacrifice bunt of the season and lined out. “Max is Max. He wants to be the best at everything. Pitching, hitting, bunting,” Martinez said. “He tells me he can play the outfield if need be.” MORE STATS Cabrera’s 17th homer marked the most by a Mets second baseman before the All-Star break. … Matz had held opponents hitless in their last 26 at-bats with runners on base until Soto singled with one out in the first and Rendon followed with a home run. TRAINER’S ROOM Nationals: RHP Stephen Strasburg, out for nearly a month because of shoulder inflammation, threw a bullpen that went well, Martinez said. Strasburg will make rehab start Sunday for Class A Potomac and is expected to throw 80-85 pitches. … 1B Ryan Zimmerman (oblique strain), sidelined since May 10, could rejoin the Nationals right after the All-Star break at home vs. Atlanta, Martinez said. Mets: OF Yoenis Cespedes has been taking grounders at first base while rehabbing at the spring complex in Port St. Lucie, Florida. The oft-injured slugger hasn’t played in the majors since mid-May, and the Mets think a position shift might ease the toll on his legs. The team is seeing whether moving to first might be an option for next season. UP NEXT Nationals: RHP Tanner Roark (3-11, 4.76 ERA) is tied for the major league lead in losses. He got no-decisions in two starts vs. the Mets this season. Mets: RHP Noah Syndergaard (4-1, 3.06) is expected to come off the disabled list for his first big league start since May 25. The 2016 All-Star has been sidelined by a strained ligament in his right index finger. Callaway is looking forward to lining up a healthy rotation led by ace Jacob deGrom, Syndergaard, Matz and Zack Wheeler after the break, when the Mets open up at Yankee Stadium. “Obviously, the first half was not a success and it was unacceptable,” Callaway said. NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) – In a city full of electric, eye-catching advertisements, one controversial billboard is turning heads in Times Square. The pink billboard prominently place in one of the tourist capitals of the world says “Got cravings? Girl, tell them to #SuckIt” and features a smiling young woman sucking on a lollipop, which the company Flat Tummy says are supposed to suppress your appetite. Sophie Vershbow, 28, who has struggled with eating disorders in the past, says it’s nothing short of a dangerous diet ad. “It’s so potentially harmful to so many people walking by it, and I felt like we finally needed to take a stand and try and get it taken down,” she told CBS2’s Jessica Layton. She tweeted, “Hey Twitter, Let’s use our power for good by guilting @FlatTummyCo into taking down their Times Square billboard advertising appetite suppressants. Love, A former-anorexic teenage girl.” Hey Twitter, Let’s use our power for good by guilting @FlatTummyCo into taking down their Times Square billboard advertising appetite suppressants. Have we actually gone mad? Why aren’t there any boys in the ad? Why is it (expletive) PINK? Because you feel men can look however they want? Their goals are to be successful. But ours are to just be smaller?” Some moms have called it a body-shaming billboard. “Obviously, it’s suggesting that if you have a flat tummy, you’re a better person, and I don’t link that message,” one woman said. “Not really offensive to me,” said another. Celebrities like Kim Kardashian have promoted the product, and while some people say you can’t police every sign you seen, the company’s claim that the 35 calorie pops are natural and safe have not be evaluated by the FDA, Layton reported. Flat Tummy has not responded to CBS2’s request for comment, but the company’s website does say you should consult your doctor before trying any of its products or any dietary supplements at all. The companies that own the billboard also did not return our calls or emails.

Some Women Say Body-Shaming Billboard In Times Square Has Got To Go
COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) — Prosecutors on Thursday dropped charges against porn star Stormy Daniels just hours after she was arrested and accused of illegally rubbing undercover police officers’ faces against her bare breasts during a performance at a strip club. Her attorney — Michael Avenatti — said she was “set up” in a Columbus police sting operation, calling it an “absurd use of law enforcement resources.” Police said they routinely conduct such undercover operations. The 39-year-old adult film star, who claims to have had sex with Donald Trump before he became president, was charged with three misdemeanors, each punishable by up to six months in jail and a $1,000 fine upon conviction. She was released on $6,000 bail around daybreak Thursday. By early afternoon, prosecutors said they were dropping the case because Ohio’s law against physical contact between strippers and customers applies only to someone who “regularly” performs at a club. In Daniels’ case, it was her first appearance at Sirens in Columbus. A witness also said there were other dancers on the premises doing the very same things. A person who answered the phone at Sirens declined to comment. (credit: MySpace) Columbus police chief Kim Jacobs said “one element of the law was missed in error.” “A mistake was made, and I accept full responsibility,” she said. Officers were well within their area of responsibility when making the arrests, she added. But she said the officers’ motivations will be reviewed internally. Without providing details, she said unsubstantiated allegations about their motivations were circulating on social media. Daniels’ lawyer called for an investigation into the arrest, saying some of the officers had what appeared to be “very Pro-Trump” social media pages. The lawyer, Michael Avenatti, tweeted screenshots from what he claimed was the Facebook page of one officer with a pseudonym and asked people to help confirm it. Daniels considered reappearing at Sirens but later opted for a different club, Vanity Gentlemen’s Club, a Thursday night performance confirmed by manager K.J. Kopras. Police said Daniels, whose real name is Stephanie Clifford, smacked the faces of two female officers and one male officer with her bare breasts during the Wednesday night show. Officers knocked on the door of her tour bus after the performance and took her into custody in an arrest that Avenatti said left her “traumatized and rattled.” She was booked under a 10-year-old state law known as the Community Defense Act, which says dancers at “sexually oriented” businesses are prohibited from touching customers and vice versa. Police said two other dancers were arrested along with Daniels. Prosecutors will decide whether to pursue charges against those women. Thursday, Daniels said she was going to use her tip money to pay to get the other dancers out of hot water. Police said Daniels’ arrest was part of a long-term human trafficking investigation of adult clubs. They said they have made numerous arrests under the no-touching law but did not immediately provide a number. The police department “engages in these operations routinely,” spokesman Sgt. Dean Worthington said. Franklin County Municipal Court records show 23 similar cases this year, including the charges against Daniels, 14 last year and six the year before. Daniels has said she had sex with Trump in 2006, when he was married. Trump has denied it. Before the election, she was paid $130,000 to stay silent in a deal handled by Trump’s personal attorney Michael Cohen. She is suing to invalidate the nondisclosure agreement.

NEW YORK (AP) — A federal jury in New York convicted key players Thursday on charges related to Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s “Buffalo Billion” economic redevelopment program. The Manhattan jury returned its verdict after a monthlong trial put a spotlight on how lucrative contracts worth hundreds of millions of dollars were awarded for redevelopment projects aimed at revitalizing upstate New York, particularly Syracuse and Buffalo. “We are absolutely heartsick over the verdict,” said Michael Miller, a lawyer for Alain Kaloyeros, formerly the president of the State University of New York’s Polytechnic Institute. Defense lawyers promised appeals. “Alain Kaloyeros is innocent,” Miller said. “He did not rig bids. Not a penny was lost. Not a bribe was paid.” Prosecutors said Kaloyeros arranged for a Buffalo developer, Louis Ciminelli, and his company LPCiminelli to win a development job in Buffalo worth a half billion dollars. Kaloyeros, praised by Cuomo for his ability to bring high-tech jobs to Albany, was counted on by state officials to repeat the success with the Buffalo Billion project. Prosecutors maintained a corrupt bidding process steered deals to favored developers. More: Cuomo’s ‘Buffalo Billion’ Project At Center Of Corruption Probe As guilty verdicts were announced, Ciminelli shook his head. Kaloyeros looked down. Outside court, attorney Paul Shechtman, representing Ciminelli, called it a “difficult time to try a political corruption case.” He noted that former New York state Senate leader Dean Skelos , a Republican, was on trial on corruption charges on the same floor. And former state Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver , a Democrat, was convicted in May of corruption. Over 30 New York state lawmakers have left office under a cloud of criminal or ethical allegations since 2000. Over a dozen were convicted of charges including authorizing bribes and diverting charity money for personal use. “I think you have a state and a lot of citizens in this state that think it is dysfunctional and that there is a culture of corruption,” Shechtman said. Also convicted were developers Steven Aiello, 60, and Joe Gerardi, 58, executives at Syracuse-based COR Development. Prosecutors said they unfairly won a $100 million job in Syracuse. The defendants were convicted of conspiracy to commit wire fraud and other charges. They could face over a decade in prison at sentencings set for October. Stephen Coffey, Aiello’s lawyer, said he was “shocked to see this verdict go right down the line. Guilty on everybody.” He, too, blamed the current political climate. “These aren’t great times to try this case,” Coffey said. “All these public corruptions. Everything going on in Washington.” Cuomo, a Democrat, had praised Kaloyeros, who led many of Cuomo’s efforts to lure high-tech investment upstate. Cuomo once called Kaloyeros his “economic guru.” After the verdict, Cuomo said in a statement: “The jury has spoken and justice has been done. There can be no tolerance for those who seek to defraud the system to advance their own personal interests. Anyone who has committed such an egregious act should be punished to the full extent of the law.” Cuomo was not charged or accused of wrongdoing. The trial tarnished a program that the governor had made a centerpiece of his efforts to lift the upstate economy. Prosecutors said Kaloyeros was in a conspiracy to secretly enable developers who were big contributors to Cuomo’s campaigns to win contracts. Ciminelli and others in his company contributed nearly $100,000 to Cuomo’s campaign while COR executives and their relatives contributed $125,000 to Cuomo’s 2014 re-election campaign. Cynthia Nixon, who is challenging Cuomo in September’s Democratic primary, said he’s either “corrupt or he is spectacularly incompetent.” “We’re supposed to believe that the master architect of the governor’s economic development plan doled out nearly a billion dollars without the governor’s knowledge or guidance?” she said. “I for one don’t believe that. But if the governor truly didn’t know what his top aide and highest-paid state employee were doing, that’s arguably even worse.” Defense lawyers insisted chosen developers were given no advantages. Brian Kolb, minority leader of the state Assembly, said the convictions are “business as usual in Andrew Cuomo’s Albany.” “Friends get favors, campaign accounts get fatter and taxpayers get the bill,” he said. “Change in Albany is long overdue.” One watchdog group, the New York Public Interest Research Group, called for immediate ethics reforms that have long been stalled in Albany. They include tighter limits on campaign contributions, more robust ethics enforcement, and greater transparency about state spending on economic development. (© Copyright 2018 The Associated Press. APPLE VALLEY (CBSLA) — Police in Apple Valley are investigating an attempted murder-suicide they say stemmed from a possible domestic violence situation. Deputies from the Apple Valley Police department were called to a residence Wednesday afternoon in the 17000 block of Quantico Road following a report of shots fired. Police say the suspect then turned the gun on himself and took his own life. Medical personnel declared the man dead on scene. The teen was transported to St. Mary Medical Center and later airlifted to Loma Linda Medical Center in serious condition. It was unclear what the relationship was between the victim and the shooter. Officials said there were “several” people inside the home at the time of the shooting including an adult female and five juveniles. It was also not known if there were witnesses to the shooting. NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) — Baseball Hall of Famer Cal Ripken Jr. is best known for playing in more than 2,100 straight games. But a member of the New York Mets broadcast team has him beat — working for more than 4,000 straight games. As CBS2’s Steve Overmyer reports, Chris Majkowski’s work day begins like any other. For a quarter century, every Mets radio broadcast has relied on him. “What is it that I do?” he said. “Simply put: Get them on the air, keep them on the air and whatever else happens in between.” He sets up the equipment, researches stats and times out the commercial break. Apart from missing one game to attend his sister’s wedding, Majkowski has been the man behind the broadcasters for every Mets game over the past 25 years. “I probably would be watching the game every night anyway,” he said. “So why not come here, see it live and pick up a couple bucks?” “Every day working with him has been a gift, really,” said Mets radio announcer Howie Rose. “He’s an absolute treat. He’s the most valuable resource we have in the radio booth.” On this night, “Maj” added one more responsibility. He’s throwing out the first pitch. “I don’t wanna be the guy who’s on the SportsCenter’s Not Top 10 for the rest of the year,” he joked. The mound at Citi Field has been the source of catastrophe. Gary “Babba Booey” Dell’Abate hit the umpire, and 50 Cent’s pitch was enough to give anyone anxiety. “If he throws it to the backstop, that doesn’t really concern me,” said Mets TV announcer Gary Cohen. “It’s the three hopper into home plate.” For the better part of his adult life, Majkowski has built up a reputation as a pro’s pro and a true iron man, but it could all be washed away with one bad pitch. Fortunately, he came through like a champ. Over the years, Majkowski has been the backbone of the Mets broadcasts. On this night, he earned his own celebration.

SMITHTOWN, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) – A Long Island teen who has battled cancer for years celebrated her Sweet 16 Thursday. As CBS2’s Cindy Hsu reports, her community came together to give her the best birthday. It was a day of beauty for Erika Gottlieb her friends at Cactus Salon & Day Spa in Smithtown. The services were a gift from the salon. “I’ve been very happy and excited and surprised,” she told Hsu. Gottlieb has been through a lot. She was an active 12-year-old when a rare bone cancer hit, keeping her in the hospital for 237 days straight. She had to have parts of her hip and pelvis removed and underwent 14 operations, which left her unable to walk. When she finally returned home, hundreds of people rallied behind her. “Erika was in the hospital for almost nine months. So to come home and to have so many people and her friends with her… It keeps Erika smiling and keeps our whole family together,” her mother, Cindy, said. Gottlieb is now a leader in training for children’s cancer camp with the group Kids Need More. Melissa Firmes, the founder of the organization, is recovering from leukemia. “Erika has helped me and shown me how to recover. She’s shown me how to have a good attitude,” she said. Jess Rosenbloom, one of her friends from camp with brain cancer, came all the way from Canada for her Sweet 16. “I don’t care if we fly, if we drive, if we walk, we’re going,” she said. “She just has the power to make everybody laugh, to make everybody smile.” “Think positive, never give up, and you always people around you,” said Gottlieb. While she will be getting lots of presents, she said the best gift is that she’s now cancer free. She’s doing well but still needs to get scans every six months and will need to be monitored by doctors for the rest of her life.
