ALPINE, N.J. (CBSNewYork) — The Palisades Interstate Parkway police chief has been suspended over a controversial incentives program. Starting Monday, Chief Michael Coppola will be off the job for 90 days. A review by the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office found Coppola would reward officers who wrote the most tickets and had the most arrests. Winners received better squad cars, parking spaces and meal allowances. Coppola’s private company also provided IT services for the police department. He did not charge for the service, but officials called it a potential conflict of interest. The review also showed officers misrepresented themselves as a charity instead of a labor group when soliciting donations.

DOWNEY (CBSLA) – A man has been taken into custody on drunken driving charges after he allegedly drove his car into a crowd of people outside a Downey bar early Friday morning, injuring himself and four others. The collision occurred before 2:15 a.m. outside the Anarchy Library bar, at East Foster Road and Woodruff Avenue. Witnesses told CBS2 that the suspect, a 28-year-old man, was driving down the street, revving his engine just before he lost control and slammed into the crowd. The car also struck a pole and another car. “And he revved the engine up just to show off the engine in front of everybody in front of the club, showing off the engine, revving it, driving lightning fast,” witness Mark Gonzalez told CBS2. “Then he made a turn on this street going this direction, burning rubber, skidding across the intersection, and then I didn’t see him, and then a second later, boom, we heard the crash.” Four pedestrians were hurt, three of whom sustained critical injuries, the Los Angeles County Fire Department confirmed. One of the victims was pinned underneath the car and had to be rescued. “He got pinned between two cars and he was laying on the ground right there,” witness Gregory Jones said. “Personally, it hurts my heart to see anything like that, I had to walk across the street. I couldn’t even look any longer.” All four were rushed to a hospital and are expected to survive, the L.A. County Sheriff’s Department reports. The driver was also taken to a hospital with minor injuries and was later booked on charges of driving under the influence of intoxicants.

LOS ANGELES (CBSLA) – Authorities are searching for a University of Southern California graduate student who has been missing for five days. Two undated photos of Bo John Jones. According to Los Angeles police, 22-year-old Bo John Jones was last seen by his roommate on July 8 at around 4:30 p.m. at his downtown Los Angeles apartment located in the 1100 block of West 6th Street. Security cameras caught Jones walking out of the complex at 5 p.m. His father, James Jones, told CBS2 Thursday that his son’s wallet, keys and car were left behind. His cell phone was later tracked to MacArthur Park, where it was found Tuesday near one of the playgrounds, James said. The park is about one-mile from the apartment. James does not have the phone’s password, so he has been unable to open it. “My son is a very conscientious person, he wouldn’t do anything to hurt his family,” Jones said. “He’s a straight-A student.” Bo is studying operations research engineering at USC. He is described as white, 5-foot-7, 140 pounds, with brown hair and blue eyes. He was last seen wearing a red USC t-shirt, grey shorts and sandals. Anyone with information on his whereabouts should call detectives at 213-996-1800.
