OAK PARK (CBSLA) — The campus of Oak Park High School was closed Wednesday following a threat made on Facebook. Authorities said the threat was made by a 74-year-old man who blames the school for his son’s death. CBS2’s Greg Mills says the man’s son died on June 1 and attended the school decades ago. The threat was taken seriously — the man who allegedly posted it boasted about knowledge of explosives and weapons. Morton Green was arrested in Laughlin, Nevada and faces charges of criminal threats. On July 8, he allegedly posted: “SOME ONE ASKED ME WHAT I PLANNED TO DO FOR THOSE RESPONSIBLE FOR MY SON’S DEATH? THE ANGER I HAVE AND MY KNOWLEDGE OF EXPLOSIVES, AND SHOOTING GIVES ME SO MANY DIFFERENT OPTIONS…THEY TOOK HIS LIFE AWAY, NOW IT IS TIME TO SEE IF THEY STILL THINK IT WAS FUNNY ABUSING MY SON. NO ONE KNOWS THE ANGER AND PAIN I SUFFER NOW AND THEN.” He posted on June 2nd that his youngest son was “found dead yesterday.” Mills says that since that day, there were almost daily postings about politics, his son and his anger with the staff at the high school. What apparently prompted that anger goes back 23 years, Mills reported. An LA Times article refers to a lawsuit filed on behalf of then-14-year-old Robert Green. The lawsuit claims that Green was harassed and ridiculed by football coaches because his hair was too long. Lucky Kellner filed the suit. Calls to Kellner by Mills were not returned. Due to the threatening posts, Oak Park canceled summer activities Wednesday. The school contacted parents and activities resumed Thursday. The Ventura County Sheriff’s Department and Las Vegas Police arrested Green in Laughlin, Nevada. He is awaiting extradition. His bail was set at $100,000.

UNION CITY, N.J. (CBSNewYork) — Three children were killed and several other people were injured when a fire ripped through a home Friday morning in Union City, New Jersey. The flames broke out just before 9 a.m. Friday at the multi-family home on 25th Street. “The fire went to five alarms with extensive heat, our firefighters operated judiciously, and we got the fire under control,” North Hudson Deputy Fire Chief Nick Gazzillo said. Two-year-old Jason Gonzalez and his 7-year-old brother Christian were killed in the blaze, along with their 5-year-old cousin Mailyn Wood, CBS2’s Jessica Layton reported. Late Friday night, officials said two other children remained in critical condition, as well as one woman. A man was listed in stable condition. Two dozen firefighters were injured — six were hospitalized and 18 were treated on the scene. “I just came close to the building, I tried to help them. You know, like knock on the doors… I went to the second floor, tried to help them to people came out,” neighbor Eudes Hernandez told CBS2’s Clark Fouraker. “It was two ladders. Once they climbed up and they went inside, everybody just started screaming frantically,” said neighbor Eddie Miranda. “All of them were unconscious. One’s face appeared to be burned. They took out a lady, her hair was burned, both of her arms were burned.” The Red Cross is assisting the roughly 30 people displaced by the fire. “I am heart broken,” Union City Mayor Brian P. Stack said in a statement. “It is a very difficult day for Union City. I continue to pray for the victims and their families and offer any resources I can to assist them. I am extremely thankful for the efforts of our first responders who gave their all under extremely difficult circumstances.” “I wish I could’ve done something,” said Miranda. “My heart goes out to the family, my heart goes out to the first responders. They did everything they could, but I guess it’s unfortunate that time wasn’t on their side.” The cause of the fire is under investigation.

NEW YORK (CBSNews) — The fallout continued Friday for Papa John’s, as business partners and even universities that have accepted large sums from the pizza chain’s founder scrambled to distance themselves after John Schnatter admitted using a racial slur during a business call. The University of Louisville announced that the school’s football stadium will no longer carry the Papa John’s name. The stadium is to be redubbed “Cardinal Stadium” effective immediately , university president Neeli Bendapudi said Friday. Later that day, Schnatter admitted to using the N-word on a conference call and apologized, but said it was taken out of context. In a radio interview with WHAS in Louisville, Schnatter said he feels “sick” about the incident. Explaining how he came to use the slur, he said was “just talking the way that the Colonel talked,” according to The Associated Press — a reference to the Colonel Sanders of KFC. But “I said it, and it’s wrong,” he told the station. Cutting ties The University of Kentucky, which houses the “John H. Schnatter Institute for the Study of Free Enterprise,” on Friday said it would no longer use Schnatter’s name. “We appreciate Mr. Schnatter’s understanding that his unacceptable language is contrary to the values of the University of Kentucky,” it said on Twitter. However, believing that maintaining ties with him would create a “barrier,” the statement said, “neither the Gatton College of Business and Economics nor the Institute will recognize Mr. Schnatter in any way.” Schnatter helped found the center in 2005 with a he made an $8 million gift to the school. The Charles Koch Foundation contributed $4 million to help start the center. Even Papa John’s Pizza is moving to distance itself from the man who started the company. The chain on Friday said it was pulling Schnatter’s image from its marketing materials. It also plans to launch a listening tour and hire an outside auditor on matters of inclusion, it said. “We want to regain trust, though I know we need to earn it,” CEO Steve Ritchie said in a statement. Papa John’s does not plan to change its name, according to the Associated Press. The face of the company Schnatter has long been the face of the Papa John’s brand, and the company has acknowledged in regulatory filings that its business could be hurt if his reputation was damaged. That scenario seemed to play out last year after Schnatter blamed disappointing pizza sales on the outcry surrounding NFL players kneeling during the national anthem. At the time Papa John’s was an NFL sponsor. He resigned as CEO soon after. This week, Schnatter stepped down from his role as chairman of the board of the pizza chain. He remains the company’s largest shareholder, however, owning about 30 percent of Papa John’s shares. Sports teams are also pulling the plug on partnerships with Papa John’s in wake of Schnatter’s comments. The New York Yankees said on Friday they were ending their relationship with the franchise. “In response to the reprehensible remarks made by Papa John’s founder and owner, the New York Yankees are suspending their relationship with the company,” the MLB team said on Twitter . Previously, the Miami Marlins said they were ending their relationship with the chain, including ending a promotional deal and closing the Papa John’s concession stand at Marlins Park, according to the Miami Herald . The Tampa Bay Rays made a similar move on Thursday, ending a promotion offering fans half-price pizza after a game in which the team scored six or more runs. Also on Friday, the NFL’s Atlanta Falcons and Atlanta United of Major League Soccer said they are suspending their partnerships with Papa John’s and reexamining the relationship, according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution . “The divisive comments made and acknowledged by the company’s founder are reprehensible and do not align with our core values,” AMB Sports and Entertainment, a group representing the franchises, said in a statement. Hometown fallout Fallout from the incident is having local repercussions as well. Schnatter’s hometown of Jeffersonville, Indiana, is putting distance between itself and the man it once called a “hometown hero.” The mayor of Jeffersonville, Mike Moore, returned a $400,000 donation from Schnatter to restore the Nachand Fieldhouse , a historic gym. Schnatter had pledged $800,000 to renovate the building, which also carried his name until earlier this week . “I’m not going to allow that name with those comments to be attached to anything in the city of Jeffersonville,” Moore told CBS News affiliate WLKY. “An $800,000 gift to the city of Jeff is enormous, but the city of Jeff is worth more than $800,000. It’s not for sale,” Moore said. Schnatter is also a frequent donor to Republican candidates in Kentucky and nationwide. (© 2018 CBS Interactive Inc. All Rights Reserved. HEMET (CBSLA) — A heat wave in Hemet last weekend might have claimed the life of a local father. Eddie King was 37 years old and healthy. A father of four with no pre-existing medical conditions, his fiance Nicole Young says. On Friday afternoon King was overcome by triple digit heat and rushed to the hospital. King called Young from the local hospital, saying he had fainted in the heat at their storage facility. It was 113 degrees that Friday afternoon. “He said he passed out. Woke up and they were loading him into the ambulance from heat exhaustion and dehydration,” said Young. Chief Scott Brown with the Hemet Fire Department confirms that AMR picked King up at a Cube Smart Storage on Florida Avenue Friday afternoon. They transported him to Hemet Valley Medical Center for “heat exposure” and possible “heat injury.” When he called he thought he had been at the hospital for long enough. “They had triaged him. They had put an IV into his arm. But then they had accidentally ripped it out so when they tried to put it back in the same arm he wouldn’t let them,” said Young. King told her he was going to leave. A source tells CBSLA King left the hospital on his own against medical advice to stay. At 11 p.m. it was still near 90 degrees outside. Since Young was out of town, King walked. He made it less than half a mile down the road. “My assumption is he got as far as he could walking, laid down to rest and couldn’t go anymore and just never woke up,” said Young. King was found dead under a tree the following morning. His shoes were off. His head resting on the curb like a pillow. “Like a bad nightmare,” said Young. The Riverside County Coroner’s Office says his official cause of death could take weeks, pending toxicology results. But Young says they told his family he had signs of dehydration and hyperthermia — overheating caused by extreme heat. “I don’t think he knew he was as sick as he was or I don’t think he would have left,” said Young. This was the third in a series of suspected heat-related deaths that weekend. The family has set up a GoFundMe page to help pay for medical, funeral and other expenses.

Hemet Father Dies In Extreme Heat
WASHINGTON (CNN) — The top Democrats in Congress on Friday called for President Donald Trump to cancel his upcoming summit with Russian President Vladimir Putin after the Justice Department announced indictments against 12 Russian nationals, that accused them of engaging in a “sustained effort” to hack Democrats’ emails and computer networks. “President Trump should cancel his meeting with Vladimir Putin until Russia takes demonstrable and transparent steps to prove that they won’t interfere in future elections. Glad-handing with Vladimir Putin on the heels of these indictments would be an insult to our democracy,” Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer said in a statement. The top Democrat in the House, Rep. Nancy Pelosi of California, tweeted, “@realDonaldTrump must immediately cancel his meeting with Putin.” Pelosi had said in an earlier statement, “The stakes for the upcoming Trump-Putin meeting could not be higher. President Trump must demand and secure a real, concrete and comprehensive agreement that the Russians will cease their ongoing attacks on our democracy. Failure to stand up to Putin would constitute a profound betrayal of the Constitution and our democracy.” The call to cancel the summit came after a week in which Democrats have expressed widespread concerns about Trump’s ability to sit down and challenge Putin in a one-on-one meeting, which is scheduled for Monday. White House press secretary Sarah Sanders said Friday the summit will not be canceled. In an interview on Capitol Hill, Virginia Sen. Mark Warner, the top Democrat on the Senate Intelligence Committee, said he is concerned that the President’s “ad-hoc” style of going into meetings and “winging it” is not appropriate and that the meeting should be called off with Putin. Warner said he’s concerned the US “President can be taken advantage of” by Putin, and that if a meeting cannot have additional attendees it should be scrapped. “There should be no one-on-one meeting between this President and Mr. Putin,” Warner told reporters Friday. Sen. Tammy Duckworth, an Illinois Democrat, also called for scrapping the meeting. “We must bring to bear the full force of U.S. sanctions against Russia as well as consider their expansion against broader sectors of the Russian economy,” Duckworth said in her statement. “Donald Trump must immediately cancel his planned summit with Vladimir Putin until Russia demonstrates its willingness to come back into the community of nations that respect the rule of law, legal norms and democratic institutions.” The Justice Department announced its indictments in special counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation of Russian interference in the 2016 election. All 12 defendants are members of the GRU, a Russian federation intelligence agency within the main intelligence directorate of the Russian military, who were acting in “their official capacities.” Rep. Jerry Nadler, the top Democrat on the House Judiciary Committee, said Trump should demand the extradition of the Russians indicted on Friday, but he predicted that would not happen. “He should demand that,” said Nadler of New York. “I’m sure he won’t.” Nadler said he didn’t think that Trump should cancel the summit, but he agreed that the President should not be meeting with Putin alone. Sen. Bob Menendez, the top Democrat on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, also called for “the Russian spies indicted by the United States for interfering in the 2016 U.S. presidential election.” “Second, the Treasury Department must immediately impose sanctions mandated by Congress on the Russian intelligence officers indicted today,” said Menendez of New Jersey. “And third, the President should demand Putin return Crimea to Ukraine, release individuals from Crimea imprisoned by Russia on political grounds, and fulfill his pledge to remove Iran from Syria.” “It is time for this President to stand up for America. It’s time for him to put on his big boy pants and push back against Russia,” California Rep. John Garamendi said in an interview with CNN’s Wolf Blitzer on “The Situation Room.” “If we continue to be a little baby in the background as the President thinks we should be, then we’re going to continue to get pushed around and there’s going to be a very serious consequence in Europe, in the United States, in every free election around this world,” said the member of the House Armed Services committee.
