Matt DeLucia CBS2 Meteorologist/Weather Producer Today is by no means a washout, but there will be scattered showers and storms at times. Through this afternoon its the hit or miss variety… some will see them, some will stay dry. Otherwise, its a mostly cloudy day with temps in the mid and upper 80s. The humidity has really crept up from yesterday, so we’re flirting with an oppressive feeling out there. CBS2 By tomorrow, things are downright miserable again. Highs will be in the low 90s and coupled with dew points in the low 70s, it’ll be feeling more like 95-100 at peak heating. Its a mostly sunny day with some pop-up storms as we get into the afternoon. The good news is that its really just a 1-2 day affair. CBS2 A strong front rolls through on Tuesday, likely bringing a round of strong to severe storms. Temps ahead are still near 90, but behind it… another shot of refreshing air! Temps mid to late week in the low to mid 80s with much lower humidity and plenty of sunshine. Enjoy the rest of your weekend, just have the umbrella handy!

SANTA MONICA (CBSLA) — Welcome to Candytopia, an immersive, experimental adventure into the world of candy. The pop-up museum in Santa Monica is kind of like a modern-day Willy Wonka’s chocolate factory where you are encouraged to admire art coated in candy. “I love all candy. Ask my dentist,” says “Candy Queen” Jackie Sorkin, who recalls struggling with math and science as a kid. “We do have so much appreciation for engineering, for math, for how we formulate and create these beautiful pieces that requires hundreds, to thousands, to millions of pieces of candy,” she said. The disciplines of STEAM are designed, smashed, pinned and melted together at the Candytopia workshop in Los Alamitos, Calif., where calculating math is monumental. Engineering principles come into play balancing the weights with the structure of each sculpture. Same goes for chemistry. “We treat our products with certain chemicals and sealants and bonds and things that make them last for a very long time,” she said. Take the Gummy bear, for example. “I can turn the Gummy bear into something totally crazy and different,” says Sorkin who used hundreds upon hundreds of the small, fruit gum candies treat to create Van Gogh’s Starry Night. “It’s a learning process. We want people to feel it, smell it, touch it,” said Sorkin. “Just don’t eat it, don’t lick it, don’t bite it.” For Sorkin, who once struggled in school, Candytopia is a culmination of her perseverance. “Not everything is supposed to be so easy for us. The struggle builds the character and that makes the dreams come true,” she said. “I never, ever, ever gave up on this crazy idea and now look – it’s Candytopia!”

CLEVELAND (AP) — New York Yankees catcher Gary Sanchez will begin a rehab stint on Sunday at Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre as he recovers from a groin strain. Sanchez has been sidelined since June 25, but has steadily improved in recent days and is ready to return to the field. Yankees manager Aaron Boone said Saturday that as long as Sanchez continues to progress, the plan is for him to start behind the plate in the club’s first game after the All-Star break — July 20 against the New York Mets. Sanchez is batting .190 with 14 homers and 41 RBIs in 63 games. While Sanchez has been out, Austin Romine has handled the bulk of New York’s catching duties. Boone said the Yankees miss Sanchez most because he’s a “dynamic hitter” who gives New York’s lineup more length. Sanchez hit 33 homers and drove in 90 runs last season, his first full campaign in the majors. (© Copyright 2018 The Associated Press. All Rights Reserved. The new dramedy “Eighth Grade,” about a painfully shy 13-year old stumbling through her last week of middle school, is the first film for writer-director Bo Burnham and for its young star, Elsie Fisher. But there’s more to the movie than the usual teen angst and acne. There’s the loneliness that, research tells us, is becoming more pervasive for young people as social media increases in influence. Tracy Smith talks with Burnham, and with San Diego State professor Jean Twenge, author of “iGen,” about how the internet is making adolescence even tougher.
