SYLMAR (CBSLA) — A baby rescuers were looking for off the side of a cliff in Sylmar was found safe Tuesday morning at a relative’s home in the San Fernando Valley. The child’s father had reported at about 1 a.m. that he and the baby’s mother had argued and she claimed to have tossed the baby over a cliff near Lopez Canyon and Kagel Canyon roads, according to Los Angeles County sheriff’s Deputy Tracy Koerner. Los Angeles County firefighters and search and rescue teams from Altadena and Crescenta Valley were dispatched to the scene to look for the child, while the parents were detained for questioning. During the investigation, the mother admitted she did not throw the baby over a cliff and that the child was at a relative’s home, Koerner said. The age or sex of the baby was not immediately available, he said. (© Copyright 2018 CBS Broadcasting Inc. All Rights Reserved. City News Service contributed to this report.)

(CBS News) — New restrictions are in place for boaters near Hawaii’s Kilauea volcano after a lava explosion injured 23 people on a sightseeing tour. One woman suffered a broken leg and others were burned when the blast sent rocks crashing through the boat’s roof. “The explosion looked like a gigantic firework, right off the side of the boat,” said passenger Kirk Olsen, who says the sightseeing boat was about 100 yards off the coast when a basketball-sized lava bomb crashed through the roof. Capturing the irresistible, horrifying beauty of Kilauea volcano “It was suddenly bedlam. There was screaming… You’d look on the floor and there were hot lava rocks glowing,” Olsen said. The boat that was hit is run by Lava Ocean Tours, one of several companies that takes visitors to see Kilauea’s lava pouring into the ocean. Tourists on nearby boats could see the thick plume of steam and hot ash blasting into the sky, reports CBS News’ Carter Evans. Nearly two dozen people on board were treated for burns and scrapes and one woman was hospitalized with a broken femur. The Coast Guard recently changed the rules for lava tour operators to allow them to take visitors as close as 50 meters from shore. But after Monday’s incident boats are required to stay 300 meters out at all times. Kilauea’s latest eruption started in early May and the lava flow has now destroyed more than 700 homes. “What happened today shows the unpredictable nature of a volcano, you just can’t know what’s going to happen,” Olsen said. Even though the vast majority of the Big Island is unaffected by the lava, concerns about the volcano have hurt tourism there. It’s unclear if this accident and the new restrictions will have any further impact. © 2018 CBS Interactive Inc. All Rights Reserved.

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork/AP) — The jury begins a third day of deliberations Tuesday in the corruption retrial of former New York Senate Majority leader Dean Skelos and his son, Adam . The jury ended the day Monday without reaching a verdict in federal court in Manhattan. The once-powerful Republican is accused of using the clout of his office to pressure businessmen into giving jobs to his son. Prosecutors say the jobs came with big salaries and required relatively little work, and amounted to bribes. The defense says Skelos was just trying to help his struggling son find employment. Defense lawyers say the senator never took official action for any of the businessmen. The father and son were convicted of bribery, extortion and conspiracy in 2015 but the convictions were overturned after a Supreme Court decision narrowed the definition of political corruption. There is an overwhelming consensus among U.S. intelligence and law enforcement that Russia orchestrated a campaign to interfere in the 2016 U.S. presidential election. The president has been reluctant to accept this conclusion despite all the evidence, making him a nearly solitary figure in his administration and his own party. Paula Reid reports.
