NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) — Birds are coming to Broadway , but the wooden statues won’t sing, rather inform. For the last four months, Nicolas Holiber has used reclaimed and recycled wood to build bird statues. The goal is to install 12 of them in Upper Manhattan and bring awareness to how real life birds are impacted by climate change. “For me, this is a great environmental message… Combining of two amazing things: art and conservation,” said artist Nicholas Holiber. The Brooklyn artist has partnered with the Broadway Mall Association and the organization, New York City Audubon. He is using money from a Kick-Starter campaign to fuel his “Birds on Broadway” project. Holiber says each statue represents a bird that is either native to New York City or passes through on their migration routes. “They all are part of a group of over 300 North American species… that are in peril or face threats due to climate change,” he said. The nearly nine-foot tall birds are expected to land on Broadway April, 2019. They will take over Broadway, every 10 blocks or so, from W 64th St. to W 166th St. “Art brings people together,” said Holiber’s assistant Bishop Mcindoe. “It makes people put aside their ego and settle their differences.” Each statue will explain the problems these birds face and what help they need. Some New Yorkers are already looking forward to learning about this. “I don’t think too many people are aware of what’s going on,” said Upper West Side resident Mizunay Symesom. “I think it’s important for the next generation to actually see it,” said Upper West Side resident Peter Miranda. Holiber says he doesn’t plan on water proofing his creations — so New Yorkers can see the wear and tear from the weather. “Seeing that change and thinking maybe about what’s going on,” said Holiber. The organization Big Reuse has donated the wood that’s left over from the city’s demolition and remodel projects. The birds will be up for eight months.

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) – The common denominator behind many diseases is inflammation, and while powerful anti-inflammatory drugs help, they often have serious side effects. Now medical experts say a tiny battery-powered stimulator could do the same thing for people suffering from inflammation-related diseases, reports CBS2’s Dr. Max Gomez. Take the case of 29-year-old Kelly Owens, a young woman who looks like the picture of health – a vast improvement over a year ago. Owens was suffering from severe inflammatory arthritis and Crohn’s disease, an affliction that started when she was in middle school. “It was a lot of abdominal pain, diarrhea, nausea,” recalls Owens “I was leaving class and having to go to the bathroom 20 times a day.” Numerous powerful anti-inflammatory medicines failed to control her Crohn’s or her arthritis, which sometimes landed her in a wheelchair. Her remarkable transformation was thanks to an early version of a tiny nerve stimulator that shut down the inflammation underlying both Owens’ Crohn’s and arthritis. “We are able to make devices that use electric current to hack into the signals in the body’s nerves and to turn on the anti-inflammatory signal in the nerve to stop the inflammation,” said Dr. Kevin Tracey. Tracey pioneered this entirely new way to modulate inflammation through bio-electronic medicine at the Feinstein Institute for Medical Research at Northwell Health on Long Island. The key is the vagus nerve, a large bundle of fibers that innervates internal organs throughout the body. By placing a very low-power stimulator on the nerve in the neck, doctors can activate the nerves that go to the spleen where they release chemicals to shut down the inflammatory cells there. “Patients with drug refractory rumitoid arthritis had very significant reductions in their disease activity, which was maintained for up to two years,” said Dr. David Chernoff. This nerve stimulator developed by Setpoint Medical is much smaller than the one in Owens’ body. It just takes a small incision to place it alongside the vagus nerve in the neck. And the result? “Vagus nerve stimulation has been a miracle to me,” she said. The new and improved nerve stimulator is programmable and uses so little power to activate the right nerves that it’s rechargeable by simply wearing a collar from time to time. It takes only a few minutes of stimulation several times day to stop the inflammation. Fore more information, click here or contact Dr. Diane Horowitz at 516-708-2550.

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) – The second half of the baseball season starts Friday for the Yankees and Mets with part two of their Subway Series at Yankee Stadium, and Noah Syndergaard will be on the mound for the Mets. On Thursday, he spent his final day off with some kids at a baseball camp in New Jersey, reports CBS2’s Otis Livingston. The youngsters were full of questions for the star. “Will you have three strikeouts tomorrow?” one little boy asked. “I hope I have a lot more than three,” the pitcher replied. “Will you throw a no-hitter tomorrow?” another boy asked. “I’m gonna try… They’re a good team,” the pitcher replied. But not all the questions were about baseball. Somebody even asked the man nicknamed “Thor” if his long blond locks bother him when he pitches. “It’s worth it, having the hair so,” answered Syndergaard. “How long did it take to grow your hair?” one boy asked. “I’ve been growing it out for the last three years, now I’m just in a maintenance phase,” answered Syndergaard. It’s been a rough season for Syndergaard and the Mets. He was injured since late May until making a successful return last Friday. He and Mets ace Jacob deGrom have been at the center of trade rumors recently, but the fan favorite is hoping he stays put in the Big Apple. “I love New York City,” he said. “I love doing things like this, seeing all the young Mets fans out here and it brings a lot of joy to myself personally. “I’ve embraced New York City and New York has embraced me, and hopefully I can stay a Met for the remainder of my career,” he continued. “But for right now, I really have no say in that. I have zero control over it.” The Citi Noah Syndergaard Baseball Pro Camp works with Tickets For Kids Charities to provide camp scholarships to disadvantaged kids. Thursday’s group consisted of roughly 200 youngsters in grades 1 thru 8 – mostly Met fans, but ironically, it was a Yankees fan that won the homerun hitting contest with Syndergaard pitching. “It feels really good,” said Gavin D’Altrui. “It’s fun to hit off of him, too.” The Subway Series will feature two teams headed in opposite directions: The Yankees near the top of the majors, the Mets closer to the bottom. But after losing two of three on their home field in June, expect the Mets to be geared up for a win in the series.

LINDEN, N.J. (CBSNewYork) – More and more New Jersey municipalities are joining the conversation on marijuana legalization. The state’s second-largest city is following New York City and Philadelphia, implementing a decriminalization policy. As CBS2’s Meg Baker reports, there are mixed feelings on the issue. While some municipalities are passing resolutions in opposition, Jersey City is taking a more progressive approach. Decriminalization went into effect there on Thursday. “We are downgrading all marijuana offenses that come through the city ports of Jersey City to local ordinance violation, which will not add to a criminal record or have any of the other collateral consequences of a misdemeanor conviction,” said Jake Hudnut, Jersey City’s new chief municipal prosecutor. Hudnut’s recommending a fine of no more than $50 or five hours of community service if marijuana charges are not dismissed. He’s on the same page as Gov. Phil Murphy , calling it a social justice issue. “People of color are three times more likely to be arrested and prosecuted for marijuana possession, even though cross-racial usage of marijuana appears to be the same,” he said. So where do things stand at the state level when it comes to legalizing adult use of marijuana? “We’re close to getting an agreement with the administration and hopefully the Assembly leadership, so we can have hearings and potentially a vote before the end of the summer,” said State Sen. Nicholas Scutari. Scutari is the lead sponsor of the bill. He says legislators are digging into the details before holding public hearings. “Tax rates, how many dispensaries there will be, how many grow facilities there will be, where they will be located, what’s going to be required for these people in order to get a license to either grow, manufacture or sell,” he said. Political expert Jim McQueeny says there may be more going on behind the scenes. Hesitation may be brewing, because the entire Assembly is up for reelection in 2019, he says. “I think they’re really concerned that voters might think they’re going pell-mell into this thing and opening up places for distributors to be selling marijuana with Slurpees at Wawa and 7-Eleven,” he said. Scutari says decriminalization keeps drug dealers in business and hopes to firm up wavering support for legalization on both sides of the aisle in the next six weeks.

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) – Police are descending on New York area airports to put the brakes on fake cabbies who claim to offer bargains, but are likely a ripoff. Many travelers have been getting repeatedly hassled by drivers offering car services, but these are not legit cab , limo or ride-share drivers, reports CBS2’s Dave Carlin. “Why can’t the airport regulate that a little better?” said David Bennet, a businessman in from Dallas who says he’s seen little improvement. For years hidden camera investigations have shown “hustler drivers” cruising and aggressively soliciting people , with mixed results. “Since I’ve never been here, I definitely would never jump in and go with a random person,” said Valerie Terry of Louisville, Ky. Others are pressured into taking rides that wind up over-charging them and putting their lives at risk. Ride-share and cab drivers who say that they follow the rules welcome the tough new crackdown, but they hope it goes far enough. “They’re ripping off people left and right,” said Manoj Kumar of Richmond Hill. It seems you could easily identify them just from what they’re doing, so why do we still get it every single time though the airport? “It’s very lucrative for someone to come here and do these illegal fares,” said Charles O’Connor. “We’re going to request legislative action to increase the fines and penalties… By hitting people in the wallet, absolutely.” The addition of more undercover enforcement officers is not a new promise, but it’s right on the heels of a man with many previous solicitation arrests who was caught after leading officers on a chase. Rooting out repeat offenders is the main thrust of this effort at LaGuardia, John F. Kennedy and Newark airports. Last year there were nearly 700 solicitation arrests at LaGuardia and Kennedy, and the goal is to push to double that number for 2018.

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) – Kenny Bazile was convicted Thursday of second-degree criminal possession of a weapon and second-degree manslaughter in connection with the 2015 killing of Carey Gabay , a former aide to Gov. Andrew Cuomo. Gabay was hit in the head by a stray bullet on a Brooklyn street in 2015. Prosecutors say a turf war between two gangs sparked the shooting, which happened hours before the annual West Indian Day parade. A block in Clinton Hill, Brooklyn where Gabay once lived has been renamed in his honor . Five men faced charges in the killing . Gabay was a Harvard-educated lawyer who served as first deputy general counsel at the Empire State Development Corp. “Carey was an inspiring public servant whose life was cut short by senseless gun violence. I commend the men and women of law enforcement for their relentless pursuit of justice and thank the prosecutors for their work in honoring Carey’s legacy,” Cuomo said in a statement. “Nothing can bring Carey back to his wife Trenelle, his family and all those who loved him, but I hope this guilty verdict gives them some comfort that justice has been served. Carey will be forever missed.”

SAN FRANCISCO (CBSLA/AP) – The University of California has reversed course, decreasing tuition for the first time in nearly 20 years, this after it had previously planned to hike tuition . The UC Board of Regents announced Thursday that tuition would drop by $60 for in-state students for the 2018-19 year, bringing the total resident tuition and fees to $12,570. The board is holding two days of meeting at the UC San Francisco Mission Bay. The decrease is due to the end of a temporary surcharge which had been in effect since 2007 to recoup legal costs from losses in two class-action lawsuits which cost UC nearly $100 million. The UC had planned earlier this year to raise tuition for all students by $342. UC officials scrapped that proposal in April. In March, however, the board voted to raise nonresident tuition next year by 3.5 percent, to $28,992. The state budget that took effect July 1 boosted funding for the state’s public universities in an effort to stave off tuition increases. The UC system last lowered tuition for the 1999-2000 academic year. Regents approved a 5 percent tuition decrease for that year. In April, the California State University system chose not to raise tuition at its 23 campuses for the 2018-19 year. In 2017, amid large protests, the CSU Board of Trustees approved a 5 percent increase in tuition, bringing annual tuition for 2017-18 for a resident student to $5,742. ATLANTA, Ga. (CBS Local/CNN) – An outbreak of salmonella linked to raw turkey products has affected at least 90 people across 26 states, the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention announced Thursday. Among them, 40 people have been hospitalized, but no deaths have been reported. Illnesses have been reported in Alaska, California, Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Hawaii, Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Oregon, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia and Wisconsin, according to the CDC . In interviews with health officials, people who have gotten sick reported eating different types and brands of turkey products purchased from several locations, the CDC noted in its announcement. Of 61 people interviewed, 37 reported preparing or eating turkey products that were purchased raw, including ground turkey, turkey pieces and whole turkey before they began experiencing symptoms, according to the CDC. Two of the 61 people interviewed became sick after pets in their home ate raw ground turkey pet food. Three of the people interviewed reported working in a facility that raises or processes turkeys or living with someone who worked in such facilities. Samples of raw turkey pet food, raw turkey products and live turkeys have tested positive for the outbreak strain of salmonella, which could mean the outbreak is “widespread in the turkey industry,” the CDC said. The first cases of illness in the outbreak began in November and they continued to this month. Symptoms of salmonella infection include diarrhea, fever and stomach cramps about 12 to 72 hours after being exposed to the bacteria. The symptoms usually last four to seven days, and most people recover without treatment. In rare cases, salmonella infection can cause death if the patient isn’t treated promptly with antibiotics. An estimated 1.2 million salmonella cases occur annually in the United States and various foods are the source for about 1 million of those illnesses, according to the CDC. The US Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service is monitoring the outbreak. On Thursday, the agency said in a statement that it has not identified a single source for the outbreak at this time. The USDA and the CDC said they “have shared this information with representatives from the turkey industry and asked about steps that they may be taking to reduce Salmonella contamination.” The food safety service “reminds consumers to wash their hands thoroughly after handling any raw meat and poultry products, cook these products to the safe recommended temperature, and use a food thermometer,” the statement said. The CDC noted that the outbreak is a reminder that raw turkey products can have germs that easily spread around the kitchen and make people sick. To help prevent salmonella infection from raw turkey, the CDC advises to: Wash your hands before and after preparing or eating food. Cook raw turkey thoroughly to an internal temperature of 165 degrees Fahrenheit, and heat leftovers to 165 degrees Fahrenheit. Thoroughly wash hands, counters, cutting boards, and utensils with warm, soapy water after touching raw turkey and use a separate cutting board for raw turkey and other raw meats if possible. Avoid washing raw poultry before cooking, as germs in raw poultry juices can spread to other areas and food. Avoid feeding raw diets to pets, as germs like salmonella in raw pet food can make your pets sick. The-CNN-Wire & © 2018 Cable News Network, Inc., a Time Warner Company. All rights reserved.
