ENCINO (CBSLA) — Residents at an apartment complex in the San Fernando Valley have gone six days without running water, just in time for another approaching heat wave. The taps at the 509-unit Encino Oaks apartment have been dry since Sunday, when a water pipe broke. Some of the disgruntled residents said that as soon as the 47-year-old complex’s management fixes one pipe, another one breaks. Crews were working on the third break Friday. “It’s a nightmare! It’s terrible,” said one man. “Like 19th century!” said Arman Arman. “We take water from [the] pool for [the] toilet,” he chuckled. “It’s impossible to live without water, you know. It’s second to air,” one woman said. One tenant, however, said his neighbors are overreacting. “I don’ think it’s a big deal.[…] Immediately,[…] there were Sparkletts trucks pulling up with hundreds and hundreds of cases of water to drink,” he said. Portable toilets were also provided. Still, senior citizen Alfredo Lima said it’s difficult for him to access the water, given his age. “I need the water.[…] Very hot. I’m 84-years-old, you know. It’s too much,” said Lima. The condo association released the following statement: “The Association is working with the appropriate governmental authorities and is complying with their orders and requirements in order to restore water service to the community as quickly as possible.” Many residents fear their homeowners association fees will increase with all the fixes. The repairs come as another extreme heat wave is forecast to hit the Southland on Monday.

ELMSFORD, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) — A CBS2 investigation that began with an anonymous letter has now prompted a school board leader to resign. An anonymous letter popped into CBS2’s Tony Aiello’s mailbox Monday, urging CBS2 to check out the village of Elmsford, and Michael Colasuonno, who had been running for reelection as a board of education trustee. Until Tuesday night, Colasuonno was chairman of the board, Aiello reported exclusively Wednesday. But he then learned that CBS2 uncovered evidence that Colasuonno misled the board about his residency. “Everybody has to follow the law,” one woman said. “Maybe he should resign,” another said. And indeed Colasuonno did resign at 10 p.m. Tuesday. “Effective immediately, I am resigning from the Elmsford Board of Education and withdrawing my nomination as a candidate for this coming election,” Colasuonno wrote to the district clerk of the Elmsford Union Free School District. State law requires school board members to be registered voters in their own school district. For years, Colasuonno claimed to live on Woodlands Avenue in Elmsford – in a house owned by his sister – Rose Ann Zeppieri. “He’s in our residence. He lives here,” Zeppieri told Aiello. But Colasuonno’s voter registration showed he moved 20 miles north in 2013. He voted in Yorktown Heights last fall, Aiello reported. Neighbors on Beechwood Lane confirmed that Colasuonno lives in there with his wife, Dorothy. She was home when Aiello came to the house, but she refused to come to the door. Colasuonno ignored repeated request for comment. His seat on the board is unpaid, and it was not clear why he wanted to stay on even after moving out of the district. The district superintendent said ballots have already been printed for the school board vote on Tuesday, but the levers on the voting machines will be locked so votes cannot be cast by Colasuonno.
