Angels Trade Gold Glove Winning Catcher To Astros For Lefty Prospect, Cash

ANAHEIM (AP) — The Los Angeles Angels on Thursday traded slick-fielding catcher Martin Maldonado to the Houston Astros for lefty prospect Patrick Sandoval and $250,000 in international signing bonus pool money. Maldonado’s contributions behind the plate helped the Angels’ starters post a 3.77 ERA, which ranked fifth in the American League despite numerous injuries and significant inexperience in their rotation. A Gold Glove winner last season, Maldonado is also hitting .223 with 32 RBIs in 78 games. “Martin has been a huge part of what we know has been a terrific year on the mound,” Angels manager Mike Scioscia said. “There’s no doubt that Martin had the respect of everybody, not only the coaching staff but the players, and contributed greatly to where we needed to be on the defensive side.” Maldonado, who is owed $1,362,903 from his $3.9 million salary, is eligible for free agency after the World Series. He understood that a trade was possible given the Angels trailed Houston by 15½ games in the AL and began the day 10½ games back of Seattle for the second wild-card berth. “I’m going to be a free agent. We haven’t played the way we want to play, and today is business. They got to do whatever is best for the team,” Maldonado said. Maldonado said he was initially caught by surprise when he was informed of the trade, but welcomed the opportunity to join the defending World Series champions. “Playing against those guys, it’s a team that they never give up,” Maldonado said. “They compete from the first pitch to the 27th out, so I’m looking forward to learn more as soon as I get there about those pitchers and those guys.” The Astros designated catcher Tim Federowicz for assignment. Dodgers To Honor Andre Ethier At Retirement Ceremony Next Month

LOS ANGELES (CBSLA) — The Dodgers announced Wednesday that the team will honor Andre Ethier next month with a pre-game retirement ceremony on Friday, August 3. Ethier’s 12-year Dodger career will be honored prior to the 7:10 p.m. game against the Houston Astros, the team said. Actor Jason Bateman will emcee the event. There will be tributes from teammates past and present. Fans are encouraged to arrive early. “I look forward to coming back to Los Angeles and Dodger Stadium, places I’m so lucky to have called home for the last 12 years,” said Ethier. “There’s nothing like stepping out on the field at Dodger Stadium and looking up and seeing the faithful Dodger Blue supporting you, and I’m grateful for the reception and support I received in all my years playing there. I’m humbled by this evening and look forward to sharing it all with you.” Ethier, 36, played all 12 of his Major League seasons with Los Angeles and helped lead the Dodgers to seven division titles and eight postseason appearances from 2006-17. He batted .285 with 303 doubles, 162 home runs and 687 RBI in 1,455 games, earning two All-Star selections (2010, ’11), a 2009 Silver Slugger Award and a 2011 Gold Glove. During the course of his career, Ethier earned a reputation for coming through in the clutch and finished his career with 14 walk-off RBI, the second most in Los Angeles history (Dusty Baker, 16), while posting career marks of .282 with runners in scoring position and .315 with the bases loaded. Fittingly, his last Major League at-bat resulted in a clutch hit – a pinch-hit RBI single in Game 7 of the World Series against the Astros. He holds the Los Angeles record for hit by pitches (58) and also consecutive hits, stringing together a hit in 10 consecutive at-bats from Aug. 22-25 which tied Edward Konetchy’s franchise record set in 1919. His 30-game hitting streak from April 2-May 6, 2011 remains the second longest in franchise history behind only Willie Davis’ 31-game run in 1969. The ever-popular Dodger was originally selected by the Athletics in the 2nd round of the 2003 First-Year Player Draft out of Arizona State University and acquired by the Dodgers in a December 2005 trade in exchange for Milton Bradley and Antonio Perez. In addition to his contributions on the field, Ethier was passionate about his impact off the field and provided support to under served communities, including donations of $375,000 to the Los Angeles Dodgers Foundation during his time with the club. These funds were used to revitalize and rename the Union Rescue Mission Learning Center, now The Maggie and Andre Ethier Learning Center, which provides classes to homeless men and women in Los Angeles. The Baseball Report: Matheny’s Out, deGrom’s Agent Sends Mets A Message

Ryan Mayer The St. Louis Cardinals missed the playoffs just four times between 2000 and 2015, while making the World Series four times and winning twice. The franchise was seen as one of the gold standards in the league and had seemingly undergone a successful transition at manager from Tony LaRussa to Mike Matheny. Well, the last two and a half years haven’t been as kind to the Cardinals, and on Saturday it cost Matheny his job. St. Louis, 48-46, have missed the playoffs each of the last two seasons and enter the All-Star break seven-and-a-half games back of the Cubs in the division race and four games back in the battle for the Wild Card. The franchise hasn’t missed the playoffs in three consecutive seasons since 1997-1999 and clearly, executives thought a change was needed in order to avoid that fate. In addition to the team’s performance on the field, there were incidents off the field, like the situation between closer Bud Norris and reliever Jordan Hicks , that seemed to factor into the decision. Either way, over the course of his six-and-a-half seasons at the helm of the squad, Matheny went 592-474 with a World Series appearance back in 2013, when the Cards lost to the Red Sox in six games. While the Cardinals are looking for a new manager, the New York Mets could be looking for a new ace if they don’t negotiate a new contract with Jacob deGrom. Reports this week indicated that deGrom’s agent had told the team that the 30-year-old righty is interested in locking into a long-term deal to stay in the Big Apple. But, that came with a caveat. deGrom’s agent, Brodie van Wagenen of CAA, told reporters that if the Mets do not share that same interest in a long-term contract, the team should immediately begin looking for a trade. That’s not quite an outright trade request from deGrom, but it’s as close as one can get. In fairness to deGrom, he is certainly out-performing his contract, as through 123 innings pitched this season he’s allowed just 23 earned runs, good for a minuscule 1.68 ERA. He becomes arbitration-eligible after this season, but the team still has two years of control through the arbitration process before he could become a free agent in 2021. LOS ANGELES (AP) — Yasmani Grandal homered, Enrique Hernandez hit a solo shot on his first pitch in the seventh inning for the go-ahead run, and the Los Angeles Dodgers rallied for a 5-3 win over the Angels on Sunday to gain a split in the Freeway Series. Each team won three games in the season series, with four decided by one run. The Dodgers ended the first half with a National League-leading 129 homers, tying their record for the most homers before the All-Star break set in 2000. All-Star Max Muncy leads the team with 22. The Dodgers (53-43) head into the break atop the NL West by a half-game over Arizona. The Angels continue heading in the opposite direction. They fell to 49-48 and are 14 games behind the AL West-leading Astros. All-Star Kenley Jansen retired the side in the ninth for his 27th save a day after serving up a 10th-inning homer to Kole Calhoun in the Dodgers’ 5-4 loss. The Angels’ Jefry Marte blasted a three-run homer on his first pitch from Clayton Kershaw to tie the game 3-all in the fourth. Justin Upton led off with an infield single to Kershaw and Ian Kinsler followed with a single to set up Marte’s fourth homer of the season. The Dodgers led 3-0 in the second. Grandal homered, Hernandez hit a sacrifice fly to center field and Kershaw helped himself with a two-out RBI single. Kershaw didn’t figure in the decision, allowing three runs and six hits in 6 2/3 innings of his fifth start since coming off the disabled list. He struck out eight and walked four on 108 pitches, the most he’s thrown since working under restrictions in his first four outings back. Kershaw escaped a bases-loaded jam in the first. He retired seven in a row before the Angels got to him in the fourth. Kershaw gave up a two-out walk to All-Star Mike Trout in the seventh and was replaced by Kenta Maeda (7-5), who got out of a bases-loaded situation by striking out Kinsler. Maeda had one strikeout in one-third of an inning. Taylor Cole (0-2) took the loss, allowing one run and three hits in two innings. He struck out one. Trout was 2 for 10 in the three-game series. He walked twice Sunday, extending his franchise record for walks in the first half to 84. Angels starter Deck McGuire gave up three runs and four hits in three innings. He struck out two and walked two. Marte and Matt Kemp of the Dodgers snapped their bats in two over their knees in frustration after striking out to end the first and fifth innings, respectively. UP NEXT Angels: Resume play on Friday with a three-game series in Anaheim against the World Series champion Astros. Dodgers: Open the second half Friday at Milwaukee to begin a 10-game trip. NEW YORK (AP) — Daniel Murphy and Trea Turner each hit a two-run single in Washington’s five-run seventh inning, helping the Nationals beat the New York Mets 6-1 on Sunday. Matt Adams added two hits and scored a run as Washington salvaged a split of its four-game set against New York. A preseason favorite to win the NL East and contend for a World Series championship, the disappointing Nationals hit the All-Star break with a 48-48 record, good for third in the division. The Meadowlands Racetrack in East Rutherford started taking sports bets at 11 a.m. Saturday. The track is located in the sports complex where the NFL’s New York Giants and Jets play, about six miles (10 kilometers) from New York City. The daily fantasy sports provider FanDuel is running the space, and says bettors are now able to wager on the World Cup final, men’s and women’s tennis, and Major League Baseball games. Later this year, gamblers will be able to place bets on everything from first downs to wins and losses in all major American sports. “The things that we will be bringing will be like being able to bet in the middle of a game, so that as the score changes the odds change,” FanDuel Chief Operating Officer and President Kip Levin says. It becomes the fourth sports betting outlet in New Jersey, following the state’s U.S. Supreme Court victory in a case that cleared the way for all 50 states to legalize sports betting. Monmouth Park racetrack in Oceanport, near the Jersey shore, and the Borgata and Ocean Resort casinos in Atlantic City had already offered it. Those three outlets took in $16.4 million in sports bets in the first two weeks it was legal. Some of the money raised was bet on events which haven’t even happened yet, like the World Series. In taxes alone, New Jersey has raised almost $294,000. “There was no legislation done in New York, so everybody in New York has to come, if they want to make a legal sports bet, here to the Meadowlands or Monmouth or Atlantic City,” Monmouth Racetrack CEO Jason Settlemoir said. Legislators predicted sports betting would raise 20 to 40 million dollars in tax revenue per year. Dodgers’ Chase Utley To Announce Retirement: Report

(CBS SPORTS/CBSLA) – Chase Utley is in the midst of his 16th season at the big-league level. It will be his last. Currently in his third full season with the Los Angeles Dodgers, Utley will reportedly announce this afternoon his intent to retire at the end of the year. Though Utley has not been an effective player this season (he entered Friday with a 77 OPS+), he was without a doubt one of the best second baseman of his era — and could well find himself in Cooperstown down the road. Utley made six All-Star teams, won four Silver Slugger Awards, and earned MVP votes in five consecutive season. He’s a career .276/.358/.466 hitter who, from 2005-13, hit .290/.378/.503 with 202 home runs and 123 stolen bases. Here’s a look at where he ranks among second basemen since he debuted in 2003: Hits: fourth Doubles: second Home runs: second Runs batted in: second Stolen bases: sixth Batting average: 26th On-base percentage: eighth Slugging percentage: third Wins Above Replacement: second Robinson Cano is the one second baseman with more WAR than Utley since 2003. Meanwhile, Ian Kinsler is the only other second baseman within 10 wins of Utley. (Dustin Pedroia is 13 wins back, and Ben Zobrist is 21 wins behind.) Utley’s advanced metrics stack up well historically, too. His 65.6 career WAR includes 49.3 coming during his peak. The average Hall of Fame second baseman, for reference, notched 69.5 career WAR with 44.5 coming during their peak. Add in how he was a pivotal part of some great Philadelphia Phillies teams, including the 2008 World Series champions, and he could get the nod from those who prefer their Hall of Famers to have enjoyed team success in addition to individual accolades. Of course any discussion of Utley’s career is not complete without mentioning his takeout slide on Ruben Tejada during the 2015 postseason. The league subsequently changed the rules concerning how baserunners were allowed to slide. Tejada, for his part, never recovered to play as he did before the incident. Utley was expected to hold a news conference at 3:15 p.m. Friday afternoon.

Who Is MLB’s First-Half MVP?

Ryan Mayer MLB teams have already passed the midway point of the season in terms of games played. However, next week, when teams take a few days off for the All-Star Break, will mark the unofficial halfway point. With the Midsummer Classic scheduled for next Tuesday, July 17th, it’s a good time to look back on the season to date, recalibrate some predictions for the postseason, and examine some of the most interesting storylines as the July 31st trade deadline approaches. In order to do that, we caught up with four CBS Local sports anchors to get their thoughts on who the first-half MVP was, what potential trades they see their teams making and predictions on how the pennant races will shake out. There were a variety of answers to the MVP question, but one player did get multiple votes. That would be Los Angeles Angels center fielder Mike Trout. “Even though the Angels aren’t great, Mike Trout is, and it’s hard to argue with the season that he’s having, that he isn’t the best player in baseball,” said Mark Viviano of WJZ in Baltimore. “That makes him the most valuable. He’s got my vote.” KYW in Philadelphia’s Don Bell agrees with Viviano’s assessment, adding that Trout’s Wins Above Replacement number of 6.9 at the halfway mark puts him on pace for the best season of his career. However our other two anchors, WBBM in Chicago’s Ryan Baker and CBS 11 in Dallas-Fort Worth’s Keith Russell had different picks in the A.L. race. Russell’s choice was a bit more outside-the-box. “I think it’s Boston’s J.D. Martinez”, said Russell. “I know that a guy who predominantly plays D.H. has never won MVP, but this may be the year. When you’re in the top five in batting average, lead the majors in home runs and RBI, does it really matter that you don’t play the field?” For Baker, his eyes are set on Houston, and their diminutive but powerful second baseman. “Jose Altuve. I can’t think of a player that does more for his team than Altuve, both at the plate and on the field with the energy he brings,” said Baker. With the trade deadline looming on the horizon, MLB teams have differing strategies, depending on their record and short-term future. Some teams, like the Orioles, White Sox and Rangers are likely to be sellers at the deadline, while the Phillies and Cubs are expected to be among the teams looking to add a piece or two for the stretch run. We asked the guys who they thought could be on the move for their respective franchises. “The Orioles are a team that are trading away some of their best players,” said WJZ’s Viviano. “Manny Machado, Zach Britton, Adam Jones, Brad Brach, all these guys as free agents are probably going to find their way out of town because the Orioles are going to go into a rebuilding mode.” Viviano, along with many others in the baseball world, is expecting Machado to be dealt prior to the deadline, KYW’s Don Bell is just fine with that, saying he wants the Orioles superstar to come to Philly. “The place to go would be Baltimore to get Manny Machado,” said Bell. “You know he’s a free agent at the end of the year and it would be a short-term rental, but it would add a huge pop to their lineup, and it would potentially help them win the division for the first time in seven years. Meanwhile, down in Texas, CBS 11’s Russell wants to see the Rangers deal away one of their beloved veterans, not because he’s under-performing, but rather to give him a shot at winning a ring. “I would personally like to see the Rangers trade away Adrian Beltre,” said Russell. “I know how great Beltre is. I know he’s going to be in Cooperstown one day. But that’s why he deserves a shot to win a World Series ring.” In Chicago, WBBM’s Baker is watching a pair of teams with opposite needs going into the deadline. The Cubs could be buyers, while the White Sox, are continuing to rebuild. “I know Cubs have some issues with their starting rotation: Yu Darvish’s health, the reliability of Tyler Chatwood and Kyle Hendricks taking a step back this year, but I really don’t see Theo [Epstein] making a big trade for an arm,” said Baker. “But, if he does so, one guy who I think might be expendable is Ian Happ.” “On the other side of town, one guy who’s come off the disabled list and is really looking like the All-Star that he was last year is Avisail Garcia,” said Baker. “He would be the one guy I would potentially look to trade if I can get another nice haul in return.” For more of the guys’ opinions on the first half and looking ahead to the rest of the season, take a look at the video above.
