7 Hurt, Including 2 Children, After Car Slams Into Outdoor Dining Structure In Midtown

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) — Several people are hurt, including two children, after a multi-vehicle crash sent debris flying through the air during the morning commute in Manhattan. The crash happened around 8:30 a.m. at the corner of 2nd Avenue and East 50th Street in Midtown . Police said a white van was driving south on 2nd Ave. when it hit a black Toyota Camry, causing the Camry to spin out and crash into an outdoor dining area nearby. Fortunately, no one was inside the structure. The white van then crashed into a food stand about a block away at 49th Street. Police said seven people were taken to the hospital, including two children, ages 5 and 7, who were hit by debris. (Credit: Blank Slate Restaurant) A restaurant owner whose business is right in front of the scene said one of his employees heard a loud bang and rushed out to help. “He came right out, he called 911. Luckily, no one got hurt. We had people seated in all these little huts. Luckily, just some debris made it over here, nothing more than that,” Zach Israel told CBS2’s Kiran Dhillon. “We heard the sirens all morning. My son said he woke up and heard like a boom, like a bomb, or someone falling from a building and screens,” another person added. All of the victims were taken to area hospitals in stable condition and expected to be OK. Police said the driver of the van is in custody. NYPD Releases New Video Of Man Wanted After Good Samaritan Stabbed To Death Trying To Stop Robbery In Brooklyn

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) — Police are trying to track down a man in new surveillance video allegedly connected to the deadly stabbing of a good Samaritan who tried to stop a robbery in Brooklyn . Yong Zheng , 46, was killed on Feb. 26 after he intervened in what turned out to be a robbery of an illegal gambling den in Sunset Park . Zheng, who was returning from dinner with his family, saw the victims of the robbery confront the suspects and believed it may have been another anti-Asian hate crime . Zheng ran over to help and was stabbed four times by the suspected robbers. The three robbery victims were also stabbed, but are expected to be OK. Zheng was the sole provider for his family, working as a bus driver. The community has set up a fundraiser for his two young children. To donate, visit gofund.me/85622e18 . Police arrested 45-year-old William Smith for Zheng’s murder, but sources said at least two other accomplices were on the loose. Man Shot By Anaheim Police During Human Trafficking Investigation

ANAHEIM (CBSLA) – One man was shot by Anaheim police early Monday morning and several more people were arrested during a possible human trafficking investigation. The shooting occurred just before 6 a.m. in the 100 block of North Syracuse Street, according Anaheim police spokesperson Shane Carringer. Nov 9, 2020. (CBSLA) A man in his 30s was rushed to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, Carringer said. No officers were hurt. At about 11:30 p.m. Sunday, police were called to an apartment building on Syracuse Street about a scheme in which suspects helped smuggle undocumented immigrants into the U.S. and then held them for ransom, Carringer said. They were called by a relative of one of the victims. Police put the apartment building under surveillance, and while officers were eyeing the location, they were approached by a man and a confrontation ensued, resulting in the shooting. Police have not yet determined if the man shot had anything to do with the smuggling scheme, he said. Police located the victim who drew them to the location, as well as 10 other individuals who were in the apartment, Carringer said. It was not yet clear if they were all being held against their will, he added. Several suspects have been taken into custody, Carringer said, including the alleged ringleader. New DNA Testing Helps Identify Remains Of 9/11 Victim Nearly 17 Years Later

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) –  It has been nearly 17 years since the September 11 th terror attacks , and remains of one of the victims have just been identified. As CBS2’s Cindy Hsu reports, the medical examiner’s officer was able to make the ID through a new kind of DNA testing. More than 2,700 people were killed when the Twin Towers were attacked, including 26-year-old Scott Johnson who was working as a securities analyst at an investment bank on the 89 th floor of the South Tower. The Montclair, New Jersey man was a big ice hockey player, so his family donated a hockey puck in remembrance to the 9/11 Memorial Museum. You can also find his name at the South Memorial Pool. The only thing found at the scene for his family to hold onto was his wallet – until now. This week, the medical examiner’s office announced it has identified Johnson’s bone through new DNA testing, where special chemicals are used to remove DNA from the bone fragments. One of the main difficulties in the process of going through 22,000 remains is how degraded the fragments are. “These remains went through, at Ground Zero, things like fire and water, jet fuel, sunlight, mold and bacteria – these will all destroy DNA,” said Mark Desire, of the medical examiner’s office. Johnson is now the 1,642 nd person to be identified. So far, 60 percent of those who died at the Twin Towers have been identified through remains, and each time a family is notified, it hits home for the forensics team. “It gets very emotional each time, and that relationship and the ‘thank yous’ and the hugging, it’s a very special project,” Desire said. He said the office made a promise to 9/11 families to keep searching for the remains of their loved ones, and he hopes more advances in DNA testing will allow them to keep that promise. The medical examiner’s office says the last ID was made in August of last year, but the victim’s family did not want the name released.

Police: Man Admits To Stabbing Adoptive Fathers In Sherman Oaks

SHERMAN OAKS (CBSLA)  — A man was arrested Tuesday on suspicion of stabbing his two fathers at their Sherman Oaks home. The stabbing was reported at about 1 a.m. in the area of Burnett and Moorpark avenues, after an apparent argument at the family’s home. The two men, who are in their 50s to 60s, are in critical condition and undergoing surgery. When police arrived, the suspect – the victims’ 21-year-old adoptive son who was home from college – was inside the house and allegedly admitted to stabbing his fathers to officers. His face bloody, he was taken into custody. A pocket knife was recovered, police said. The suspect, who was not identified, also injured his hand during the stabbing. Investigators are working to determine the motive for the stabbing.

Deputies Investigating After Family Tied Up, Man Pistol-Whipped In Violent Home Invasion In Palmdale

PALMDALE (CBSLA)  — Sheriff’s deputies are investigating a robbery in Palmdale that resulted in a family being tied up in their own home and left one man with injuries from being pistol-whipped. Deputies say they received a 911 call around 1:40 p.m. Monday reporting a home invasion indicating there were three male suspects in the house on Erika Ln. Investigators say the recipient of the call heard a struggle in the background shortly after, then the call was disconnected. When investigators arrived to the house, they found the family inside was tied up and robbed of cash and property. Residents came home to in the middle of the afternoon stunned by the scene. “To be coming up my street and seeing all these police cars lined up in front of his house and the yellow tape streaming around the trees, I was very shocked,” one neighbor said “I asked one of the officers if had someone had been killed,” another neighbor added. “He had explained that my neighbor had just been pistol-whipped by some intruders.” One neighbor says he spoke with the pistol-whipped victim. “I spoke to him briefly, he has knots all over his face and cuts and gashes on the back of his head from the pistol-whipping, and he’s terrified, he’s terrified,” the man said. Another neighbor spoke with the victim’s relative. “He told me who was home at the time was the man of the house, his wife and their infant child,” he said. Neighbors say the victims own several convenience stores in the area. On July 2, there was another home invasion not far from this house. In that case, the victim, the owner of a Thai Restaurant, was also robbed at her home. Sheriff’s investigators tell CBS2/KCAL9’s Rachel Kim it’s too early to know if the two cases are connected.

15-Year-Old Boy Stabbed To Death, 2 Others Wounded In Brooklyn

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) –  A 15-year-old boy was stabbed to death Saturday morning in Brooklyn and two men were also wounded. Police said there was some type of dispute before the victims were stabbed around 6:10 a.m. near Belmont Avenue and Mother Gatson Boulevard. The 15-year-old who died was stabbed in the abdomen. An 18-year-old man was stabbed in the chest, and a 25-year-old man was stabbed in the right shoulder. They are both in stable condition. Police have not yet released a description of the suspect or suspects.

J.J. Watt Donated $10,000 To Family Of Firefighter Killed By Explosion

Ryan Mayer Houston Texans defensive end J.J. Watt was named the NFL’s 2017 Walter Payton award winner for his charitable efforts off the field after Hurricane Harvey devastated the Houston area last fall. Watt has continued his community outreach, recently donating $10,000 to the family of a Wisconsin firefighter who was killed in an explosion. Cody Barr, a captain in the Sun Prairie Volunteer Fire Department, was killed when a breached gas main led to an explosion Tuesday night that damaged several buildings in the town. The 34-year-old Barr is survived by a wife and two young girls and the Bethlehem Lutheran Church organized a GoFundMe campaign to support the family. A member of the community reached out to Watt on Twitter about the campaign and the NFL star came through. @JJWatt please do what you can for Cory Barr's family. He was very well known, liked & appreciated in the Sun Prairie community. He was brave and a true hero! Three Found Dead In Redondo Beach Condo Shooting

REDONDO BEACH (CBSLA) – Three people were shot to death late Wednesday night at a Redondo Beach condo. Redondo Beach police report that at 10:15 p.m.. officers responded to a report of shots fired at the condo in the 700 block of Esplanade. They arrived to find three peopled dead from gunshot wounds at the scene. The identities of the victims were not immediately released. Police did not disclose a motive in the shooting, but did say no outstanding suspects were being sought and there was no threat to the public. Investigators did not confirm if the shooting was believed to be a murder-suicide. Anyone with information on the case should call police at 310-937-6685.

Teen Driver Accused In Deadly Meadowbrook State Parkway Crash Appears In Court

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) — A teen driver accused in a deadly crash on the Meadowbrook State Parkway last month appeared in court on Wednesday. Fifteen-year-old Cindy Sanchez faces charges as a juvenile after authorities said the SUV she was driving crashed on the parkway on June 8 . She was  charged with three counts of manslaughter and three counts of criminally negligent homicide. Three teens, including Sanchez’s 13-year-old brother, David Sanchez, died in the crash. Also killed were 16-year-old Herbert Leo Aviles Maravilla and 15-year-old Marlon Carbajal, each of Uniondale. Police said six other teens, including the driver and the driver’s 2-year-old son, were also injured in the crash. On Wednesday, a family court judge ordered her to spend a year at a therapeutic facility for girls, where she will receive counseling, parenting courses and visits with her son. “There were three victims in this case, a horrible tragedy for the families, but there’s also a fourth victim. My client is only 15 years old. She regrets what happened here, she never intended for this accident, this horrible accident, to occur that morning,” defense attorney James Toner said. “She will have the rest of her life to work this out.” The baby’s 22-year-old father was also in court seeking visitation. Authorities said Sanchez was driving the SUV that was taken without permission from a friend’s father on a day the group planned to cut school for the beach when the vehicle crashed. A judge previously ordered a psychiatric exam for Sanchez. “She’s sad, she’s remorseful, she’s depressed,” Toner said. “She’s 15-years-old, lost her brother and lost friends.” The sister of one of the victims, Gissell Carbajal, said her brother Marlon “had like a heart of gold.” “When I got the call, I was at work and I was bawling that I didn’t think he would’ve passed like that it was shocking,” she told CBS2. One of the teens in the car told Carbajal it was a nightmare. “He said he closed his eyes. When he opened his eyes and either my brother or his brother were there, I was like, ‘I feel your pain I lost my brother too,’” she said. Prosecutors said no one in the SUV had a license.

Prosecutor: 2 Killed In South Jersey House Explosion

NEWFIELD, N.J. (CBSNewYork/AP) — Authorities say two people were killed when a house exploded in southern New Jersey early Saturday. The Gloucester County prosecutor’s office says the blast in Newfield was reported around 6:15 a.m. CBS Philly reports that the blast originated in basement of a house on the 300 block of Oakwood Drive and caused damage to nearby homes, scattering debris over several blocks. Debris strewn across the ground on the 300 block of Oakwood Drive in Newfield, NJ after a reported house explosion this morning. British police search for nerve agent source

More than 100 British police officers are searching for what may have contained the nerve agent that critically injured two people in Amesbury, a small English town. Investigators are still trying to establish how the victims were exposed to the lethal substance before collapsing. Charlie D’Agata reports.
