Glenn Gordon Caron On Season 5 Of CBS’ ‘Bull’: ‘We’re So Happy We’re Still Able To Do This’

(CBS Local)–  Season five of “Bull” is back on CBS and the show’s executive producer Glenn Gordon Caron is excited to be entertaining fans during such a challenging year. That’s why the season five premiere pays homage to all the men and women who made shooting the episode possible. While Caron has made hundreds of episodes of television during his career, this season’s first episode “My Corona” was important to him for a number of different reasons. “It was a little intimidating, but a little bit exhilarating,” said Caron, in an interview with CBS Local’s DJ Sixsmith. “People who have seen the episode know how it ends and it ends with the cast reaching out to the audience saying we’re so happy to be here and so happy that we’re still able to do this. That’s how we authentically felt. There was a period in May, June and July where we thought are we ever coming back. Caron loved playing with this concept and watching Michael Weatherly execute exactly what he was thinking. “It really reflected my thinking. I was asked by the network if I was going to work COVID into the show,” said Caron. “As it became clear that it was going to drag on for an extended period of time, you starting thinking about things like will I be able to go back to work, will I be able to keep my family safe and will I recognize the world out there. Those were all the things that were going on in my mind and I looked to turn them into a story. That’s why I relate to Bull because he is very much an instinctive guy as a character. Michael really dug it and we had an enormous amount of fun.” A brand new episode of “Bull” premieres Monday night at 10 p.m. EST/PST on CBS.

Billy Gardell And Folake Olowofoyeku Describe Bob And Abishola As ‘Two People Being Unafraid To Love’

Bob Hearts Abishola is back tonight at 8:30PM ET/PT with the second episode of the show’s sophomore season on CBS . Season two of Bob Hearts Abishola sees stars Billy Gardell and Folake Olowofoyeku engaged as the pair from seemingly different worlds continue building a life together. CBS’ Matt Weiss spoke to Olowofoyeku and Gardell ahead of tonight’s episode to discuss being back at work, the show’s second season and what makes Bob and Abishola such a great pair. MW: Billy, Folake, nice to see you today! Bob Hearts Abishola is back now for season two and with the way that things have gone this year, the first thing I just want to  know is how good does it feel to actually be back? BG: It’s a gift. We’re really, really grateful to be able to work. Warner Brothers has been tremendous to us, taking very good care of us with the testing facility. We’re being as safe as we can go. So far, we put six episodes in the can, nobody sick, everybody still employed, so that’s really all you can ask for. FO: It feels great. When we wrapped season one, first I was sad because we didn’t get to finish the entire season. We were short two episodes. I looked forward to getting some rest. Then I went back to work and I was surprised by how much I’ve missed everyone. It was so good; I say I’m surprised because I went to boarding school from the age of 10. I like to flaunt that I don’t really miss people [laughs] but it was good to see everyone. It’s good to be working. It’s like Billy says, we are fortunate to be in a space to be working right now. I’m grateful for that. Warner Brothers is taking very good care of us. MW: When season two does start back up, congratulations are in order! We kick things off with an engagement. That’s great for Bob and Abishola but there’s some stuff to work through with the fact that Abishola still has a husband already. Where are we going to go from here? FO: I don’t know if a lot of people know this but we don’t know very much in advance what’s going to happen in the season, but what I would love to see is a wedding in Nigeria. With COVID and everything I don’t think that’s possible. But it would be great for us perhaps in season three even to all travel to Nigeria and have some episodes there because in Yoruba culture, weddings are sometimes a week-long event. We have an introduction, engagement, have the white wedding that’s in church. Then you have the traditional wedding. Then you have Thanksgiving, that’s already like five episodes for ceremony. It would be great to see that. MW: Sounds like you can get a whole season out of that. It would just be the wedding season. BG: I think that’s what this season’s about. It’s about these two really connecting their families. Then her finding her husband connecting with him again. Trying to get the divorce. The great thing about this show is the more they have to overcome the closer they become. That’s what you root for. It’s just a beautiful show. It’s a beautiful sentiment. Beautiful show to be a part of. MW: It’s very interesting with the show too, how you see the relationship right from the beginning. You see how it builds up to where you guys are now. What is it about Bob and Abishola that does bring them together and that does make them so great together? FO: They’re two really good people. They seem to be from different worlds but that doesn’t really matter as far as loving is concerned. They’re two really good people and they find loving each other and love and balance. BG: Love and balance without a question. MW: Absolutely. We can all use some of that. BG: Yes! FO: I think that the show is a good escape for that reason. We do need love and balance right now. There’s a lot going on in our world and this show is a nice escape. A nice reminder that at the end of the day love is really what the goal is, the most important thing . BG: Absolutely. Chuck Lorre made a good decision. He said we’re going to make love our theme and not COVID. I’m glad that they did that, went that way with it. I think it’s a nice distraction for people right now. I think it’s hard not to root for these two because they’re just fearless in everything they go into. It’s hard not to root for that kind of love. It’s great to be a part of it. MW: I’m glad you brought up Chuck Lorre. This show like a lot of Chuck Lorre shows does touch on those really important topics but does it with humor in a way that makes it very entertaining to watch… BG: It’s a smart way. His trademark is yes, we’re going to talk about real things but we’re going to be compassionate and we’re going to let me see an example of kindness and goodness. I think there’s just something magnetic about that. When you believe these characters care about each other you can get you can get vested. I really love what we’re doing that way. I really do. MW: What’s it like to find that balance between importance and humor? BG: I think it’s been very easy. Folake is a very giving soul. She’s wonderful and a great actress and our whole cast is great. I think our cast felt immediately, and you tell me if I’m right Folake, but I feel like our cast immediately felt like we were doing something that made your heartbeat in the right direction. It’s so positive immediately that it just kind of carried us. FO: Yeah, I agree. MW: What does that mean to each of you to have the show back out, to give people that entertainment and that break from things that are going on in the real world? FO: It’s surreal sometimes. A lot of times I’m just so extremely grateful. It’s almost like an understatement, but I’m just in awe how everything is just aligned perfectly to be in this situation. I’m hoping we’re giving back by providing a lot of laughter during this time. I’m very glad. I’m very grateful to be in this in this position with this pool of people with this amazing team. BG: Every now and then the universe puts you in the right place at the right time and if you embrace that good comes from that. Our show is about two people being unafraid to love and I’m a big fan of that. MW: Absolutely. Great show with a great message and coming at a perfect time when a lot of people really need it. Pounder plays coroner Dr. Loretta Wade and the show has exceeded her wildest expectations. Initially, Pounder thought “NCIS: New Orleans” was going to be the type of formulaic show that was going to wrap everything up at the end of the episode. However, the drama has been quite the opposite of that and that’s why Pounder thinks the series has resonated with people across the country and the city of New Orleans. “Just like the city that I’m in New Orleans, it’s is different and the show is different,” said Pounder, in an interview with CBS Local’s DJ Sixsmith. “New Orleans is a character that creates different types of characters and beings and this show has paid attention to where they are. I’m able to be a sassy coroner and a woman who adopts two kids because they need a home. There is a humanity in her [Dr. Wade] that is not so easy to see. It affected New Orleans a great deal and it was one of the cities at one point that had very high numbers and they were rapidly increasing. A huge part of this city is tourism. Bourbon Street was closed down and the French Quarter was closed down and people were getting very anxious about when they would go back to work. We are focusing on the anxiety of our city and how COVID-19 is affecting each and every one of us. Tim Heidecker On Showtime’s ‘Moonbase 8’: ‘We Wanted To Make Something That Would Make You Laugh’

(CBS Local)–  Showtime is the place to be this weekend because a hilarious new comedy called “ Moonbase 8 ” starring John C. Reilly, Fred Armisen and Tim Heidecker premieres on Sunday, November 8. The series is about three astronauts training at NASA’s Moon Base Simulator in the Arizona desert and they are wondering if they will ever get their opportunity to go to the moon. While training, these astronauts encounter many challenges like loneliness, self-doubt and their own incompetence. Heidecker has known Reilly and Armisen for years and he thoroughly enjoyed the opportunity to work with two great comedians in this arena. “It was a lot of fun. I have been friends with John and done a lot of work with John C. Reilly,” said Heidecker, in an interview with CBS Local’s DJ Sixsmith. “I’ve done some stuff with Fred [Armisen] and we just had this desire to work together. We wanted to find a way to cram us all into the same room and literally in the show that’s where we find ourselves. We are isolated from the rest of the world in the middle of the desert training to live on the moon. It was this homegrown, homemade project that we did on our own with A24 and luckily found a home with Showtime.” Heidecker has been making audiences laugh for decades as a stand-up comedian and an actor/producer in projects like “Bridesmaids” and several Adult Swims shows and specials. He says that this is exactly the show that he, Reilly and Armisen wanted to make. The type of classic comedy where you put very capable people in stressful situations that require a lot of experience, talent and knowledge. The other thing that we were interested in is as the space program becomes more and more normal, it’s important that it’s not just these test pilots that have this daredevil kind of attitude. It is going to require regular types to be somewhat involved. We take it to the extreme place where these guys don’t belong in the program.” Heidecker says the best part of this show was being able to work with his friends. While he has known and worked with Reilly and Armisen in the past, “Moonbase 8” provided the runway for their comedy to shine in a new way. “I got to work with one of the best actors working in John C. Reilly and working with one of the funniest people I know in Fred Armisen. We wanted to capture that sense of humor that we enjoy privately with each other between the takes and on set as you’re waiting for things to happen. That’s the spirit and energy we had in making this project. New Jersey Attorney General Responds After NJ Radio Hosts’ ‘Turban Man’ Comments

(AP/CBS) – The nation’s first Sikh-American attorney general is responding after two New Jersey radio hosts repeatedly referred to him as “turban man.” Gurbir Grewal tweeted on Thursday that he’s the 61st attorney general of New Jersey. He wrote: “I’m a Sikh American. I have 3 daughters. And yesterday, I told them to turn off the radio.” . @nj1015 : My name, for the record, is Gurbir Grewal. I’m the 61st Attorney General of NJ. Grewal (@GurbirGrewalNJ) July 26, 2018 WKXW-FM hosts Dennis Malloy and Judi Franco made the comments Wednesday while discussing Grewal’s recent order to suspend marijuana prosecutions in the state, reports CBS Philly.com . Malloy reportedly said he couldn’t remember Grewal’s name — and told Franco “I’m just going to say the guy with the turban.” The pair continued to call Grewal “Turban Man” throughout the segment. Malloy and Franco acknowledged their words might be offensive, but Malloy said “if that offends you then don’t wear the turban and maybe I’ll remember your name.” On Thursday evening, the station — known as New Jersey 101.5 — said it suspended the veteran hosts for 10 days. Malloy and Franco issued a written apology to Attorney General Gurbir Grewal and the Sikh and East Asian communities, writing they are “deeply sorry” for the pain they caused. The station released the following statement: “We offer our sincerest apologies to Attorney General Gurbir Grewal as well as the Sikh and Asian communities for a series of insensitive comments we made on our show. For 21 years, the Dennis and Judi show has been unscripted and free form. We use humor and sarcasm to make a point and add color to the broadcast; in this instance, we were off the mark. It was a mistake we both deeply regret. We respect all cultures and beliefs and are deeply sorry for the pain caused to the Sikh community, our co-workers and our beloved listeners. We take these comments seriously and echo Dennis and Judi’s sincere apology to Attorney General Grewal and his family, as well as the Sikh and Asian communities. Dennis and Judi are known for their plainspoken brand of humor, but in this case, the language used was clearly demeaning and inappropriate. New Jersey is a state that is rich in diversity, and our radio station has served as the people’s voice for nearly 30 years. Cher, Reba Among 2018 Kennedy Center Honorees

WASHINGTON (AP)  — Cher, composer Phillip Glass, country music star Reba McEntire and jazz legend Wayne Shorter will be honored for lifetime achievements in the arts at this year’s Kennedy Center Honors. The national arts center also announced Wednesday a special award for the genre-bending musical “Hamilton,” as part of the gala set for Dec. 2. Before last year’s program, several honorees threatened a boycott if President Donald Trump attended. He and first lady Melania Trump decided to skip the event “to allow the honorees to celebrate without any political distraction,” as the White House put it. The White House said it’s too early to know whether Trump will participate in this year’s ceremony. Trump may attend the Group of 20 summit in Argentina, which ends Dec. 1. Glass said he hopes Trump does show up as a conciliatory gesture to the arts community. “If he were to come, it would represent a real broadening of his perspective,” Glass said. “American arts really is our biggest contribution to the world, far more than our politics.” Last year, the Kennedy Center’s president, Deborah F. Rutter, publicly thanked Trump for allowing the night to focus solely on the arts and the honorees. But she also said she hoped to see the president attend in the future. “I always hope that the person in that office makes a point of showing as much support for American arts and culture as his predecessors did and as his successors will,” Rutter said in an interview. The “Hamilton” honor marks a first-time honor for a specific piece of art, and a first for a contemporary work. The award will go to the four main creators of the musical: writer and actor Lin-Manuel Miranda, director Thomas Kail, choreographer Andy Blankenbuehler and music director Alex Lacamoire. The musical is playing at the Kennedy Center through mid-September. “This work has had such a huge impact in such a short time. It not only changed the way that people think about art, it changed the way they think about history and the storytelling of history,” said Rutter, who didn’t think awards like this would become regular events. “We felt it was important to honor it in real time and not 30 years in the future.” The four men said in a statement that the honor was “humbling beyond our wildest expectations for our show.” One of the special aspects of the Kennedy Center program is that each recipient is given a personalized introduction and performance by participants kept secret from the honoree. Sex Abuse Victims Accept Arthur Ashe Award For Courage

LOS ANGELES (AP) — More than 140 survivors of sexual abuse by a former team doctor for USA Gymnastics and Michigan State University joined hands on stage to be honored with the Arthur Ashe Award for Courage at the ESPYs. The women who spoke out against the abuse by Larry Nassar stood together Wednesday night in a powerful and solemn closing to the show highlighting the past year’s top athletes and moments in sports. Kim had tears in her eyes as she listened to the Arthur Ashe recipients. “We must start caring about children’s safety more than we care about adults’ reputations,” Klein said. “If we can just give one person the courage to use their voice, this is worth it.” Raisman added, “For too long we were ignored. It could have been avoided. All we needed was one adult to have the integrity to stand between us and Larry Nassar.” The audience gave the group a prolonged standing ovation and remained on its feet while the women spoke. “What a powerful stage up here,” host Danica Patrick said before signing off. White won best Olympic moment with his final-run performance in South Korea featuring back-to-back 1440s to take gold, and best male Olympian. The Astros were honored as best team for winning the franchise’s first World Series. LeBron James, soon to be starring across the street at Staples Center with the Los Angeles Lakers, won best NBA player for the third straight year on his 14th consecutive nomination in the category. Brady claimed best NFL player, while Mike Trout of the Los Angeles Angels won MLB player. On a big night for Olympians, the U.S. women’s hockey team earned best game honors for their shootout victory over Canada in the gold-medal game in South Korea. Donovan Mitchell of the Utah Jazz earned breakthrough athlete honors. Quarterback Nick Foles received the championship performance trophy for leading the Philadelphia Eagles to their first Super Bowl title. The Minnesota Vikings earned best moment honors for beating the New Orleans Saints on the last play of the NFL championship game. Notre Dame’s Arike Ogunbowale won in the best play category for hitting a buzzer-beater in the NCAA women’s title game. The best coach award was given posthumously to Aaron Feis, Scott Beigel and Chris Hixon, all of whom died in the mass shooting at Florida’s Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School. Former quarterback Jim Kelly received the Jimmy V Award for Perseverance for his struggle with jaw cancer. Fellow NFL Hall of Famers Dan Marino and John Elway presented Kelly with the honor. A new CBS News series called “Whistleblower” tells the stories of heroic people who put everything on the line to expose wrongdoing. In the show’s premiere, Alex Ferrer talks to people who blew the whistle on a pediatric dental chain they say used unsafe practices on young patients.
