UNIONDALE, N.Y. (AP) — Matt Martin scored twice and the New York Islanders beat the Buffalo Sabres 5-2 on Thursday night in the opener of a three-game series. Noah Dobson, Anthony Beauvillier and Jordan Eberle also scored for New York, and rookie Ilya Sorokin stopped 16 shots. The Islanders improved to 5-0-1 in their last six overall and 8-0-2 at the Nassau Coliseum to remain the only team without a regulation loss at home. “That’s when we’re at our best, when we have four lines rolling,” Martin said. “We’re a tough team to beat when we’re playing like that. This was a good one. We just got to keep it going.” Taylor Hall and Rasmus Ristolainen scored for Buffalo, which has lost five straight (0-5-1). The Sabres are 2-8-1 since taking a two-week break for a COVID outbreak. Jonas Johansson, making his second start of the season with starter Linus Ullmark injured, finished with a career-high 40 saves. “It was a very bad game,” Ristolainen said. “I feel like every time we were kind of getting back at it, getting the momentum in their zone, and getting some good shifts then we made a mistake. I made unfortunately a lot of mistakes today that cost us the game.” The teams continue the series with afternoon games at the Coliseum on Saturday and Sunday. Sorokin, coming off 20-save shutouts in his previous two games, had six saves in the first period, four in the second and six in the third to improve to 3-2-1. With Buffalo trailing 3-1, Jeff Skinner hit a goal post from the left circle in the opening minute of the third. Eberle then put the Islanders ahead 4-1 as he scored on a rebound of a shot by Anders Lee at 3:14, beating Johansson on the glove side. Ristolainen pulled the Sabres back within two at 7:23, jamming in the rebound of a shot by Jack Eichel for his third. Martin got his second of the night and fourth of the season as he converted the rebound of his own shot from the right doorstep with 5:32 left. It was Martin’s third career two-goal game, and first since March 25, 2014, at Carolina. The Islanders, in the midst of a stretch of 19 games in 33 days, got their seventh straight win against the Sabres, including four this season. “I think it’s important if we’re going to have success, the games where we have everybody contributing, being on the right side,” Islanders coach Barry Trotz said. “We’ve got a very busy stretch here, we’re going to have to manage it.” Hall got the Sabres on the scoreboard at 3:08 of the second. Sorokin made a save on Cody Eakin’s shot from the left side, but Hall put in the rebound from the right side to make it 2-1. Beauvillier restored the Islanders’ two-goal lead on a breakaway with 5:02 left in the middle period. Beauvillier, playing in his 300th career game, got a pass from Brock Nelson, sped ahead of Ristolainen and skated in and beat Johansson for his second. “Nelly put it in the space for me and yeah, it felt pretty good to score a goal,” said the 23-year-old Beauvillier, in his fifth NHL season. “Feels like yesterday I first started playing here. I wouldn’t call myself an older guy. I’m still young at heart, I guess. It’s been a fun ride so far and looking forward to the rest of it.” The Islanders outshot the Sabres 18-6 while scoring twice in a dominant first period. Dobson put the Islanders up 1-0 as he got a pass from Eberle in the middle and fired a shot past Johansson’s blocker for his second with 9:25 left. Martin doubled New York’s lead on a fortuitous deflection as he sent the puck from the left corner beyond the goal line off Johansson’s mask and in with 3:39 left. “Initially I was looking to find (Casey Cizikas) or (Cal Clutterbuck) around the net,” Martin said. “They weren’t really open. Everyone kind of gravitated to them and I took a look at the goalie and saw he was down and just tried to put it there. Luckily I was able to hit my spot and it went in.” Trotz said Martin has been working on that shot in practice and liked that it worked. “Well-placed shot and really timely goal for us,” Trotz said. FINISHING STRONG The Islanders are outscoring opponents 26-13 in the third period this season for a league-best plus-13 margin in the period. New York has a 17-5 margin in the third at home. SCORING DROUGHT Hall’s goal early in the second was only his second of the season and first since Buffalo’s season-opener against Washington on Jan. 14. He got the Sabres’ first goal of the season in his first game with the team after signing a one-year, $8 million deal in the offseason. THREE IN A ROW This is the second time in franchise history the Islanders are facing the same opponent in three straight games. New York previously did it March 4-10, 2012, against New Jersey. The Islanders will do it three more times this season: March 11-14 against New Jersey, March 18-22 against Philadelphia and April 22-27 against Washington. This is the only time all the games are in the same arena. The Sabres are playing three straight against the same team in the same season for the first time. (© Copyright 2021 The Associated Press. Traffic Accidents In LA Dropped Nearly 42% During Pandemic Period, New Report Shows
LOS ANGELES (CBSLA) — The number of traffic collisions in Los Angeles is down nearly 42% in the first nine months of this year, according to a report released Friday. Between January and the end of September, the city recorded 24,541 collisions, a steep drop from the 42,279 accidents during the same time last year, according to Los Angeles Police Department data analyzed by Crosstown. The decline began in March, the month that Mayor Eric Garcetti ordered all nonessential businesses to close, leading to more people staying home due to the coronavirus pandemic, Crosstown reported. In March, there were 2,917 collisions, a 41% drop from the same month a year ago. The difference is most stark between April and July, when far fewer people were driving to work or to run errands. This year, the LAPD recorded between 1,723 and 2,159 collisions each month. The 2019 figures were all at least twice as high, bouncing between 4,487 and 4,858. As traffic began to start again, the number of collisions in August climbed to 2,983, a boost of more than 800 from July. September was a bit lower, with 2,662 collisions, according to the LAPD, but the figure is still well above March-July levels when the roads were all but empty. One thing that has not changed is where accidents happen. Downtown was the top spot for collisions both this year and last. However, the 1,234 collisions from January through September in the community is down 43% from the same time frame last year. (© Copyright 2020 CBS Broadcasting Inc. All Rights Reserved. NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) – Neighborhood policing gets officers out of patrol cars and onto the sidewalks. Now, it’s getting a transit twist. The NYPD Transit Bureau is adding 100 newly hired officers. As CBS2’s Dave Carlin reports, they will report daily to subway stations and apply neighborhood policing practices, growing bonds between law enforcement and the public and looking out for crime. “They’re responsible for the quality of life conditions, they’re responsible for the turnstile jumpers,” said NYPD Transit Bureau Chief Edward Delatorre. The officers are being added to four transit districts – District 3 in Manhattan and the Bronx, District 4 in Manhattan, District 32 in Brooklyn and District 20 in Queens. Two other districts got neighborhood policing back in April. “We now have half of our 12 transit districts up and running with neighborhood coordination officers,” NYPD Commissioner James O’Neill said. The NYPD says the number of officers added to patrol subway stations and platforms will continue to rise. “We intend to and will roll out the rest of the districts in early 2019,” said Delatorre. Some straphangers say even though the same officers will report to the same subway stations day after day, earning people’s trust could still be a challenge that takes time. “For police to get to know the community and for the community to get to know them is a good idea,” Megan McLaughlin, of Sugar Hill, said. “They cannot do their job as well as they should under the circumstance that there’s so much mistrust,” said John Rosenthal, of Inwood. The NYPD says when neighborhood policing is fully rolled out in the subways, it will mean a 15 percent increase in staffing for transit enforcement.

PALO ALTO, Calif. (CBSLocal) – A teenager is in serious trouble after going on a bizarre crime spree when his phone reportedly ran out of data. The 17-year-old suspect from Palo Alto was arrested after allegedly breaking into an area home, waking up a sleeping couple, and asking them to give him their WiFi password. “The male victim got out of bed, confronted the suspect, and pushed him down the hallway and out the front door of the house before calling police. No one was injured,” Pal Alto police said in a news release . The couple – both reportedly in their 60s – told officers that two kitchen knives went missing from their home during the teen’s alleged break-in, however police didn’t find any weapons on the suspected burglar when he was caught. According to authorities, the teen’s crime wave allegedly started a day earlier on July 21. The teen is believed to be the same person who came up to the window of a different home and asked a woman inside for her Wifi password. The teen reportedly claimed his phone was out of data. When the woman and another teen in the home ordered the suspect to leave their property, he allegedly fled on one of the their bikes. Officers say they found the stolen bike near the same location where the suspected WiFi-seeking crook was stopped by police. According to the release, “officers returned the bicycle to the victim and are recommending that the District Attorney’s Office add a charge of misdemeanor petty theft against the suspect.” The suspect – who was not publicly identified because he’s a minor – was taken to Santa Clara County Juvenile Hall and is facing a felony charge of burglary. He’s also been charged with prowling and providing false information to an officer, both misdemeanors.

Ryan Mayer Fantasy football season is nearly upon us. So, if you’re like me, and were focused on other things over the last few months, you probably need a quick refresher before your league holds its draft. That’s what we’re here for, to take you through the projections of the top 10 rankings for each position while also pointing you to where you can find overall projections for all off the players heading into this season. We already did quarterbacks , now it’s time to focus on the real backbone of any fantasy team: running backs. For as devalued as running backs have become in today’s NFL, at least from a contract perspective, a top-tier guy or breakout star could make your fantasy season. So, as you prepare your draft strategy, here’s a look at who CBS Sports is projecting to be the top guys headed into this season. Once again, we note that this is based on standard scoring projections. For PPR, go here . Positions | QB | 1) Todd Gurley, Los Angeles Rams Owner of the new highest-paying contract for a running back, Gurley flourished last season under the offensive system of new head coach Sean McVay. CBSSports.com is expecting more of the same this year, as the Rams brought everybody back and added wide receiver Brandin Cooks. CBSSports.com Projections- 291 Fantasy Points (18.2 FPPG) 1,392 rushing yards 12 TDs & 694 receiving yards with 5 TDs 2) Le’Veon Bell, Pittsburgh Steelers Bell has consistently been one of the most productive backs for fantasy owners over the past several years. Heading into this season, Bell will be even more motivated to produce, as his contract dispute with the Steelers has ended with him playing on the franchise tag once more. To prove he’s worth a big contract, Bell will likely want to put up big numbers and CBSSports.com is projecting him to finish with 20 more fantasy points than he did last season. CBSSports.com Projections- 260 Fantasy Points (16.25 FPPG) 1,350 rushing yards with 10 TDs & 728 receiving yards with 2 TDs Credit: Adam Bettcher/Getty Images 3) Alvin Kamara, New Orleans Saints A breakout star in 2017, Kamara proved to be effective both in the running game and in the passing game, exactly the kind of dual-threat back that proves to be the most useful in fantasy football and actual football these days. He won’t get as many carries as the two guys above him, since he’s splitting the backfield with Mark Ingram. But Kamara still promises to be an effective fantasy option regardless. CBSSports.com Projections- 231 Fantasy Points (14.4 FPPG) 933 rushing yards with 9 TDs & 732 receiving yards with 5 TDs 4) Ezekiel Elliott, Dallas Cowboys Elliott missed time last year due to the NFL’s suspension for some of his off-field antics, and he couldn’t replicate his dominant rookie campaign because of it. With no suspension looming over him this time around, Elliott should once again be the focal point of the offense. When you consider the unsettled nature of the passing game due to a questionable receiving corps, Elliott should see even more of the ball in 2018. CBSSports.com Projections- 213 Fantasy Points (13.3 FPPG) 1,348 rushing yards with 8 TDs & 388 receiving yards with 2 TDs 5) Kareem Hunt, Kansas City Chiefs Hunt, like Kamara, was a middle-round pick who became a star once the season began. He tailed off down the stretch, so did the Chiefs really, but this year he’s likely to be a bit more of a security blanket, as K.C. will trot out first-time starter Patrick Mahomes. After showing dual-threat capability last year, Hunt will look to build on his debut year. CBSSports.com Projections- 200 Fantasy Points (12.5 FPPG) 1,118 rushing yards with 8 TDs & 402 receiving yards with 3 TDs 6) David Johnson, Arizona Cardinals Johnson was the number one overall pick in many leagues last year after proving to be a workhorse running and catching the football in 2016. Then he dislocated his wrist in the opener, ending his season before it got started, much to the frustration of fantasy owners. Because of that, the projection systems aren’t quite as high on him this season. But there’s a pretty good chance that with Sam Bradford at QB and a depleted receiving corps outside of Larry Fitzgerald, Johnson will be asked to pick up the slack on offense. CBSSports.com Projections- 197 Fantasy Points (12.3 FPPG) 818 rushing yards with 6 TDs & 883 receiving yards with 3 TDs Credit: Tom Pennington/Getty Images 7) Saquon Barkley, New York Giants The rookie running back out of Penn State may be the most hyped RB we’ve seen since Adrian Peterson coming out of Oklahoma. However, Barkley is hyped for a different reason. Barkley is in the same mold as most of the guys on this list, outside of Zeke Elliott. He can catch out of the backfield and also provides a dominant presence in the ground game. People are expecting big things from Barkley, CBSSports.com’s projection system included. CBSSports.com Projections- 192 Fantasy Points (12 FPPG) 1,123 rushing yards with 8 TDs & 425 receiving yards with 2 TDs 8) Melvin Gordon, Los Angeles Chargers Did you know Gordon ended last season as the running back with the fifth-most fantasy points? I certainly didn’t. He was productive for the Chargers, but purely by playing for the Chargers, the ‘other’ team in L.A., he didn’t get much notoriety. But he’s a solid fantasy option, and CBSSports.com expects more of the same this season. CBSSports.com Projections- 188 Fantasy Points (11.7 FPPG) 1,030 rushing yards with 8 TDs & 406 receiving yards with 3 TDs Credit: Kevin C. Cox/Getty Images 9) Leonard Fournette, Jacksonville Jaguars The Jaguars battering ram of a running back had a solid rookie season, as Jacksonville tried to beat their opponents into the ground with the running game and a ferocious defense. This year is likely to be more of the same, as Blake Bortles is still the QB for the Jags, and he lost receivers Allen Hurns and Allen Robinson. While Bortles finds chemistry with the new guys, Fournette will chug along on the ground. CBSSports.com Projections- 183 Fantasy Points (11.4 FPPG) 1,148 rushing yards with 9 TDs & 290 receiving yards with 1 TD 10) Jerick McKinnon, San Francisco 49ers This is the biggest surprise of the projection system to me. McKinnon has never started more than seven games in his career, so it’s unclear what he’ll do with a full-time role. But, based on his part-time stats, it’s understandable to see this kind of projection with a full 16-game load. CBS Sports Projection- 176 Fantasy Points (11 FPPG) 885 rushing yards with 7 TDs & 552 receiving yards with 2 TDs
