NEW YORK (CBSNewYork/AP) — Students attending college at one of New York’s public universities this spring will have to quarantine at home for a week, then be tested for COVID-19 , officials announced Sunday. The spring semester will start later than usual, on Feb. 1 instead of Jan. 22, and there will be no spring break, which was canceled to prevent the spread of the coronavirus through the end of the academic year. Graduation plans for the Class of 2021 will be similar to those for the Class of 2020, whose diplomas arrived by mail after scaled-back or virtual ceremonies. “The state guidance won’t allow for big gatherings right now, so unless something dramatically changes, we don’t see that,” State University of New York Chancellor Jim Malatras said in an interview. He encouraged campuses to take time they didn’t have last spring to be more creative with the next round of ceremonies. SUNY issued the spring semester guidance as students at its 64 colleges and universities statewide made plans to leave for Thanksgiving break later this month and finish the rest of the fall semester remotely. They’ll also have to either show a recent negative test or get a test when they return to campus. After that, the regular surveillance testing that Malatras said has allowed campuses to manage the virus this fall will continue. SUNY can process up to 200,000 tests a week using a $15 FDA-approved saliva test developed by SUNY Upstate Medical University, he said. “The testing has been the thing that has really been a game changer for us,” said Malatras, who was named SUNY chancellor in August. Since August, SUNY has conducted more than 371,700 COVID-19 tests with an overall positivity rate of 0.48%, officials said Sunday. SUNY Oneonta sent students home for the remainder of the semester in early September after off-campus parties led to a spike. SUNY Cortland also is all remote through the semester’s end after closing classrooms in early October. SUNY Oswego and Binghamton University have seen temporary stops in in-person learning. The spring semester guidance, developed with input from public health experts, faculty, students and unions, combines new protocols with some already in place, like mandatory mask-wearing even while social distancing, the chancellor said. New York state is scrambling to contain a resurgence of the coronavirus that in March cut short the last spring semester for colleges nationwide. Hospitalization rates have been slowly climbing in New York and the state on Wednesday began requiring many travelers to get a coronavirus test before and after they arrive if they want to avoid a 14-day quarantine. Many of SUNY’s more than 400,000 students have continued to attend classes remotely even after the campuses reopened in the fall with classrooms, dining halls and residential buildings reconfigured to allow for social distancing. Under New York state guidance, colleges that record either 100 active cases or an on-campus positivity rate above 5% within a two-week window must pause in-person learning for two weeks. Madeleine Albright, Hillary Clinton and General Colin Powell filmed their scenes on July 11, the first week of production for the political drama, according to CBS. In the episode, star Tea Leoni’s character, Secretary of State Elizabeth McCord, turns to the former secretaries of state to ask their advice on how to respond to a delicate situation. The fifth season of “Madam Secretary” premieres on Oct. 7 on CBS.

Odds are when you think about history, visions of textbooks that painstakingly outline every battle fought in the Civil War or the events the precipitated the fall of the Roman Empire come to mind. It’s flashing back to your childhood and your grandmother’s kitchen table, where she would spin yarns about her own upbringing or the family heritage, tales told so many times that they’ve been permanently etched into your brain. The anecdotes date back generations, centuries or more, to times (almost) long forgotten. History is in the past. Yet, World Wrestling Entertainment continues to find ways to turn it 180 degrees and make history in the future . On October 28, 2018 a major chapter in the sports entertainment history book will be written when the first-ever all-women’s pay-per-view will be held. Fittingly, WWE has chosen to call it Evolution. It’s the payoff for all of the blood, sweat and tears given by every female WWE superstar to ever set foot in the ring. Women are main eventing RAW and SmackDown , and with Ronda Rousey under contract, the company’s lead attraction is a woman. And all of it has spawned a modern-day cyber grassroots movement. “Three years ago, our fans demanded a change with the hashtag, #GiveDivasAChance, and an evolution started,” WWE Executive Paul “Triple H” Levesque, said in comments distributed by the company shortly after the event was announced. “Since that time, our female Superstars have over-delivered in every opportunity presented to them, and I expect nothing different during our first-ever all-women’s pay-per-view event.” The opportunities Levesque is referencing are the first-ever women’s Royal Rumble and Money In The Bank matches, both of which were huge hits with the audience. Evolution is an all-hands-on-deck event for every female WWE Superstar currently on the roster and perhaps those yet to sign a contract, as the finals of the second annual Mae Young Classic will be held on the show. The stacked card also features the Women’s Championships from both RAW and SmackDown as well as NXT being defended. WWE is also promising that the women from the forthcoming NXT UK brand will be represented. “This historic event marks another milestone in WWE’s women’s evolution,” said Stephanie McMahon, who has largely stepped away from an on-camera role to focus on her job as WWE’s Chief Brand Officer. “The spotlight just got brighter for these athletic, talented women, who will once again showcase to the world that they can break down barriers and blaze their own trails.” But this isn’t just about the future. Nor is it exclusively about the present. Rightfully, the women who paved the way for this night to happen will be honored as well. These are the WWE Superstars who have already made history as trailblazers in the industry. Hall of Famers Trish Stratus and Lita are already booked, and other names are expected to be announced in the coming months. The pay-per-view marks the second time this year that the company will pay homage to its legends. Torrie Wilson, Molly Holly, Michelle McCool, Vickie Guerrero, Jacqueline, Beth Phoenix, and the aforementioned Stratus and Lita were all entrants in the Royal Rumble. Perhaps we’ll see some of their familiar faces again. It wouldn’t be out of bounds to propose a tag match pitting the current roster against the women of yesteryear. A rekindling of old feuds may also be in order. Mickie James vs. Trish Stratus and LayCool vs. The Iiconics would fit the bill perfectly. Evolution will take place at the Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum in New York. For what it’s worth, John Morrison — now John Hennigan — tells me that he’s very pleased with the MLW operation. A ticket pre-sale for the co-branded Ring of Honor/New Japan Pro Wrestling “G1 Supercard” show on WrestleMania weekend in New York is set for August 8, two days before they go on sale to the general public. Likely in an attempt to stifle ticket brokers, each HonorClub member is being emailed a one-time code needed to make the purchase, and there is also an eight-ticket limit. Speaking of Ring of Honor, Women of Honor regular Karen Q has been added to the list of competitors in the upcoming Mae Young Classic. She joins former ROH standout Deonna Purrazzo on the card. Purrazzo recently signed a contract with WWE after playing a key role in the development and launch of the Women of Honor Championship earlier this year. The masked luchadora Zeuxis, NXT UK ’s Isla Dawn, and former NCAA basketball champion Lacey Lane have also been announced as tournament competitors. The latter recently signed with NXT after training under the tutelage of The Dudley Boyz. Velvet Sky and Angelina Love have reunited as The Beautiful People and are accepting limited bookings. The wildly popular former TNA Knockouts will be appearing at Starrcast next month. In a recent interview with Press Slam, Velvet Sky accuses WWE of trying to copy The Beautiful People gimmick on two occasions. First with LayCool and more recently with the Iiconics. Chuck Carroll is a former pro wrestling announcer and referee turned sports media personality who now interviews the biggest names in wrestling. WWE To Make History With Evolution
(CBS Local)– Harvard’s student-run newspaper, The Crimson, is reporting one of the university’s sororities is ending the female-only Greek life tradition by becoming gender-neutral. Harvard’s chapter of the all-female sorority Kappa Alpha Theta will rebrand itself as as a gender-neutral “social group,” called “Theta Zeta Xi.” The soon-to-be former sorority will disaffiliate from its national organization in the fall of 2018, the club announced Monday, according to The Crimson. The announcement comes at the heels of a decision by Harvard to crack down on single-gender social clubs. Penalties imposed by the university in 2017 ban members of single-gender clubs and Greek organizations from holding student group leadership positions, becoming varsity athletic team captains and from receiving college endorsement for prestigious fellowships, The Crimson says. The Crimson reports that a statement was issued by Kappa Alpha Theta defending the decision as an “act of good faith.” Theta members voted unanimously to go co-ed, according to the statement. The sorority previously took a different stance. Last year, after Harvard administration voted to adopt the sanctions on single-gender clubs, the group released a statement pledging to continue its tradition of allowing only women to be the members, the Boston Globe reported.

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) — Two Oscar winners are bringing star power to a new mini-series about a dramatic 2015 Upstate prison break. David Sweat and Richard Matt’s mug shots were on front pages everywhere after the convicted killers broke out of maximum security Clinton Correctional Facility in Dannemora. They were aided by lovesick prison seamstress Joyce Mitchell. The manhunt gripped the nation and has now grabbed Hollywood’s attention. Director Ben Stiller is finishing Escape at Dannemora in time for a premiere this fall. “I think this story has every element that would grab Hollywood,” Chelsia Rose Marcius, journalist and author of Wild Escape , told CBS2. “There’s so much material to work with, there’s so much of a story to be told.” Escape at Dannemora is based off of Marcius’ book. She spent 100 hours interviewing Sweat, who told Marcius he felt “born again” during his 22 days on the run. In the upcoming miniseries he’s portrayed by actor Paul Dano, from 12 Years A Slave and There Will Be Blood . “David Sweat had not been out of prison for 12 years,” Marcius recalled. “Just simple things like seeing the lakes and rivers and mountains were a big deal for him.” Oscar winners Benicio Del Toro and Patricia Arquette star as Richard Matt and Joyce Mitchell, and Sopranos star Michael Imperioli was cast as New York Governor Andrew Cuomo. Showtime, the network slated to air the miniseries, has not yet released a picture of the actor as the governor. Cuomo’s schedule shows he spent time with Imperioli and series writer Bret Johnson in December. “I think in the series the governor is a supporting character, but during the event he was a leading man, touring the prison, leading the briefings, he was all over it,” Marcius said. “During the escape, during the manhunt he said ‘this is made for TV, this is a movie script’.” Sweat certainly had a flair for the dramatic, leaving a taunting note for investigators to find. Escape at Dannemora is schedule to premiere at a festival in France in October.

MADISON, N.J. (CBSNewYork) – MADISON, N.J. (CBSNewYork) – An alternate way of getting to the train station may be just down the road in New Jersey. Soon a select group of commuters could be powered by electric scooters, reports CBS2’s Natalie Duddridge. A transit company called Boxcar teamed up with the mayor of Madison to give people a new option for traveling a short distance from home to the train station and solve the commuter parking problem “One way to get cars out of downtown and people onto mass transit might be electric scooters,” said Boxcar SEO Joe Colangelo. “That’s really our target market here in the suburbs.” Online applicants will be chosen to test out the proposal this fall. Riders will each get a scooter for free that can go up to 15 miles on a single charge. “We’re going to require you to have a driver’s license and to participate in a safety training session and to wear a helmet,” said Colangelo. Safety was one of the issues the mayor wanted to tackle before green lighting the pilot program. “One of our council members was in China and talked about the fact that they have a share program and that their scooters were all over the place, and he was concerned,” said Madison mayor Robert Conley. Boxcar says it will build a secure storage facility inside the train station. When users return, they can ride it home, keep it overnight and charge it back up.
