NEW YORK (CBSNewYork/AP) — One of the Yankees’ strengths is getting a whole lot stronger. The Bronx Bombers have completed a deal with the Baltimore Orioles to acquire lefty relief pitcher Zach Britton. In return, the Yankees are sending Double-A starter Dillon Tate and Triple-A pitchers Josh Rodgers and Cody Carroll to Baltimore. Britton pitches in the ninth inning against the Seattle Mariners at Oriole Park at Camden Yards on June 27, 2018. (Photo by Greg Fiume/Getty Images) The 8-year-pro is recently back after missing 2 and a half months following surgery on his right Achilles tendon. In 2018 he’s posted a 3.45 earned run average to go along with four saves and 13 strikeouts through 15 and a third innings pitched. In 2016, Britton was exceptional. He was 2-1 with a 0.54 ERA and 47 saves in 47 chances. He converted an AL-record 60 consecutive save opportunities from Oct. 1, 2015, to last Aug. 21. Over his eight-year career, all with the Orioles, Britton is 30-22 with a 3.22 ERA and 139 saves. Trade: The Yankees have acquired LHP Zach Britton from the Baltimore Orioles in exchange for RHP Dillon Tate, RHP Cody Carroll and LHP Josh Rogers. — Yankees PR Dept. (@YankeesPR) July 25, 2018 Britton signed a 1-year deal with the Orioles for $12 million before the start of the 2018 season and is slated to become a free agent at the end of the year. If the trade is completed, he’ll join an already dominant Yankees bullpen led by flame throwing closer Aroldis Chapman. “I think he’s one of the best relievers in the game,” Chapman said Tuesday night through a translator following the team’s 4-0 win over Tampa Bay . “Having the opportunity to add somebody like that with so much talent would be very helpful.” Baltimore is in full-scale sell mode as the July 31 non-waiver trade deadline approaches. The last-place Orioles traded All-Star shortstop Manny Machado to the Los Angeles Dodgers last week and are seeking buyers for center fielder Adam Jones and reliever Brad Brach, both eligible for free agency after the World Series. Tate, 24, was selected by Texas with the fourth-overall pick in the 2015 amateur draft and was traded to the Yankees the following year in the deal that brought Carlos Beltran to the Rangers. Tate is 5-2 with a 3.37 ERA in 15 starts this season for Double-A Trenton of the Eastern League, striking out 75 and walking 25 in 82 2/3 innings. Rogers, also 24, is 6-8 with a 3.95 ERA this year for Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. He was an 11th-round selection three years ago. Carroll, 25, is 3-0 with a 2.38 ERA in 32 appearances for the RailRiders, striking out 55 and walking 18 in 41 2/3 innings. Carroll was a 25th-round pick in 2015. BALTIMORE (AP) — Greg Bird hit his first career grand slam to back a dominating pitching performance by Sonny Gray, and the New York Yankees beat the Baltimore Orioles 9-0 Wednesday night for a split of the four-game series. Rookie Tyler Wade and Austin Romine also homered for the Yankees, and Giancarlo Stanton had four hits. Facing Dylan Bundy (6-9) in the third inning, Bird launched a drive off the right-field foul pole to put New York up 5-0. It was the second night in a row he homered and had four RBIs. Gray (6-7) allowed three hits, walked one and struck out eight over six innings. The right-hander had lost three straight starts, the last two in which he gave up a collective 11 runs over 4 1/3 innings. Facing the last-place Orioles couldn’t have come at a better time for Gray. He’s 3-0 with a 2.00 ERA against Baltimore and 3-7 with a 6.32 ERA against everyone else. The victory enabled New York to improve to 5-5 against the Orioles this season. In this series, Baltimore won 5-4 and 6-5, and the Yankees’ wins were by a total of 17 runs. In the pivotal third inning, Stanton singled in a run before Bird ended a nine-pitch at-bat by pulling a curveball down the line. Wade went deep in the sixth, and Romine connected in the seventh. Wade’s long ball, his first in the big leagues, came on his 100th at-bat. New York has 154 home runs this season, a major league record before the All-Star break. The Yankees have played 91 games; the 1999 Seattle Mariners hit 151 in 87 games. TRAINER’S ROOM Yankees: Manager Aaron Boone said LHP Aroldis Chapman (left knee) is “good to go.” Chapman has not pitched since leaving in the ninth inning Saturday at Toronto. … C Gary Sanchez, on the disabled list since June 25 with a right groin strain, ran and did catching work Wednesday. “I would say he’s getting closer,” Boone said. Orioles: RHP Andrew Cashner was placed on the 10-day disabled list with a neck strain. He’s not expected to miss more than one start. … RHP Chris Tillman (back) is slated to conclude his rehab assignment Sunday with Triple-A Norfolk, although manager Buck Showalter floated the idea of starting him in place of Cashner vs. Texas on Sunday. MOVING PIECES Manny Machado insists he’s a shortstop. But if he gets traded by the Orioles to the Yankees before the July 31 non-waiver trade deadline — one of the many rumors out there — New York could ask him to play 3B next to Didi Gregorius. So where does that leave Yankees 3B Miguel Andujar? “Those are things I have no control over,” Andujar said through an interpreter. “I don’t pay attention to that stuff.” Neither does Boone, who said, “When you’re in a pennant chase, there’s going to be stories that are real, fake, everything.” UP NEXT Yankees: RHP Luis Severino (14-2, 2.12 ERA) seeks to add to his major league-leading win total Thursday night in the opener of a four-game series in Cleveland. Orioles: RHP Kevin Gausman (4-6, 4.11) starts against Philadelphia on Thursday night at Camden Yards in the makeup game of a May 15 rainout. (© Copyright 2018 The Associated Press. BALTIMORE (AP) — Brett Gardner had four hits, homered and drove in three runs to help the New York Yankees beat the Baltimore Orioles 10-2 Monday night for a doubleheader split. In the opener, Danny Valencia snapped an 0-for-25 skid with a three-run homer off CC Sabathia, and Baltimore ended a six-game losing streak with a 5-4 victory. The split left the Yankees a 4-4 record against Baltimore and dropped them 2½ games behind first-place Boston in the AL East. The first game ended with Gardner grounding out as a pinch hitter with the potential tying run on third base. He returned in the nightcap to torment the Orioles at the plate and in center field, where he made several fine, running catches. Gardner led off with a single off Jefry Ramirez (0-3) and scored on a double by Didi Gregorius. In the fourth, Gardner hit his seventh homer, a two-run drive that made it 3-0. That was enough offense for Luis Cessa (1-1), who allowed three hits over six shutout innings. A four-run eighth —highlighted by Austin Romine’s two-run homer and an RBI double by Gardner — ended any doubt. Despite allowing a home run to Tim Beckham, Giovanny Gallegos finished for his first major league save. New York had a season-high 17 hits, at least one from every starter. In the first game, Baltimore trailed 4-2 in the sixth when Sabathia (6-4) walked Mark Trumbo and yielded a double to Jonathan Schoop. With the New York bullpen buzzing in an effort to get a reliever ready, Sabathia served up a 2-1 pitch that Valencia drove far over the center-field wall. “To come through big with the home run there to put us ahead, it feels nice. Can’t deny that,” Valencia said. It would be the final pitch for Sabathia, who allowed five runs and seven hits in five-plus innings. The 37-year-old lefty is winless in nine starts against the Orioles since May 4, 2016. Mike Wright (2-0) struck out four in two innings of relief, Mychal Givens fanned two in the eighth and Zach Britton followed for his second save. Recalled from Triple-A Norfolk to be the 26th man for Baltimore in the doubleheader, Jimmy Yacabonis allowed three runs over five innings in his second major league start. Giancarlo Stanton put the Yankees up 1-0 with his 22nd home run in the second inning. It was 3-0 before Manny Machado doubled and Trumbo connected in the fourth. The game was a makeup of a rainout on May 31. TRAINER’S ROOM Yankees: All-Star reliever Aroldis Chapman (knee tendinitis) left Saturday’s game against Toronto with a trainer by his side, but manager Aaron Boone says there has been no discussion about putting the lefty on the DL and that the injury has not impacted his effectiveness. … C Gary Sanchez (groin) is scheduled to take batting practice on Tuesday in Baltimore, and a decision on the start of his rehab assignment will be made this weekend. Orioles: Reliever Darren O’Day will undergo surgery Thursday to repair a severe hamstring strain. “I’ve come to terms with my season being over. I’m excited to get the surgery and kind of get focused on going forward,” O’Day said. … RHP Chris Tillman (back) has been dealing with a callus on his pitching hand but remains on schedule to make his next rehab start. UP AND DOWN After going 0 for 4 in the opener of the doubleheader, INF Brandon Drury was optioned by the Yankees to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre to make room on the roster for Cessa. NO TEARS, PLEASE Dellin Betances is one of the game’s hottest relievers, but his run of four All-Star appearances in four big league seasons is over. If the right-hander was dismayed over the slight, he didn’t show it. “Every year a lot of guys are left out. Last year I probably didn’t deserve to get in,” he said. Betances started the week with a run of 18 straight scoreless appearances. Asked about being idle during the All-Star break for the first time, he replied, “It’ll be weird. But I’ll enjoy those four days.” UP NEXT Yankees: Masahiro Tanaka (7-2, 4.58 ERA) comes off the DL to start Tuesday night in the third game of the series. Both hamstrings were strained. Orioles: Andrew Cashner (2-9, 4.39) takes his eighth crack at getting his third win of the year. (© Copyright 2018 The Associated Press. All Rights Reserved.
