NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) — Air travel is getting back to normal at New York City airports Saturday following a flight fiasco. As CBS 2’s Lou Young reported, planes and flight crews are still trying to get into position following a suicide attempt that sparked a fire at an FAA air traffic control center near Chicago on Friday. As of Saturday morning, more than 200 flights have been canceled out of Chicago. There have only been a few cancellations reported at LaGuardia and JFK airports. “We waited on that line for two hours. The staff was very nice, but they said there’s nothing they can do for us today,” said Randi Law on Friday. While Chicago’s O’Hare International and Midway airports were shut down, people tried shifting from airport to airport, hoping to get where they needed to go. “We were going to LaGuardia and on the way it was canceled so we stopped here to see if we could get a flight,” Brooks Berkley said at Newark Liberty International Airport. But it was not in the cards for Berkley, and many others who did find alternative routes discovered them to be too expensive to consider, Young reported. “I just got a flight to Minneapolis. It was a thousand dollars one way, which is ridiculous,” said Lisa Small. The chaos was allegedly caused by an apparently suicidal subcontractor for the FAA, who used gasoline to start the fire and alerted the world to his actions on his Facebook account. The suspect — identified by the FBI as Brian Howard, 36, of the Chicago suburb of Naperville — has been hospitalized after slashing himself. He has been charged in a criminal complaint with destruction of aircraft or aircraft facilities, a felony. The FAA is now running Chicago’s air traffic information through four other centers in the Midwest, and flights are arriving and leaving Chicago at a reduced rate. NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) — With technology and gadgets these days, many of us are getting pretty good at multitasking. But it may be affecting your brain. As CBS 2’s Cindy Hsu reported, a new study from the University of Sussex found using media devices at the same time could be changing our brains. Those who do it often were found to have less gray matter, the part of the brain that processes information. But neurologist Dr. Andrew Varga of NYU Langone Medical Center said it’s not clear if multitasking is what causes the loss of gray matter. “People can have just smaller volume of gray matter in a certain brain area, and it’s just a matter of their natural anatomy that they were born with,” Varga said. Varga said those with less gray matter may just like using a lot of technology at once, adding, “The more things that you divide your attention between, the greater the chance that there’s going to be errors.” Theo Farrow-Hurst is only 5 years old, but has an opinion on multitasking. “Not so good,” he said. Theo’s mom said she’s working hard to cut down on distractions. “When we’re watching a show together, then that’s something we’re just doing together and enjoying that and having quality time doing that,” Teresa Hurst said. The O’Briens are having a tougher time with it. “My brother and I, we usually play on the iPad and watch TV at the same time,” said Jake O’Brien, 11. His mom is trying desperately to cut down on multitasking herself. “I do things, like crazy things, like go put my phone in my purse three rooms away so that I will finish what I need to get done, whatever it is,” Ann O’Brien said. She hopes the tricks will work, leaving more time for family. Doctors say people lose gray matter as they age, so it is important to exercise our brains. Working on puzzles, crosswords and games are good ways to do that. You May Also Be Interested In These Stories Police: Woman Keyed Car In Massapequa, Caused $4,000 In
NEW YORK (AP) — Authorities have arrested a New York City jail nurse accused of smuggling alcohol, tobacco and prescription anti-addiction drugs into Rikers Island’s largest facility in exchange for payments from inmates. Department of Investigation officials announced the charges against Jeffrey Taylor Wednesday. He was arraigned on bribery, conspiracy and contraband charges late Tuesday. An attorney for the 48-year-old registered nurse didn’t immediately return a message. A spokeswoman for Brentwood, Tennessee-based Corizon Health Inc., the company contracted for Rikers’ health care, didn’t immediately comment. Prosecutors say Taylor was paid about $2,200 via Western Union to bring vodka, Suboxone and tobacco to inmate janitors. The DOI says it did a jail sweep on Rikers last week. Recent DOI probes have resulted in more than 30 inmate and 11 jail staff arrests. (Copyright 2014 by The Associated Press. All Rights Reserved.) NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) — A new app can turn a bystander into a first responder. Drew Basse, 57, was recently recovering in the hospital following a massive heart attack. He survived, and could thank a smartphone app and Good Samaritan Scott Brawner for saving him. “If you have this app ,or if you just have the ability to help your neighbor, don’t even think about it — just do the right thing,” Brawner told CBS 2’s Tracee Carrasco. The app is called Pulse Point. It’s activated when someone calls 911 about a cardiac arrest. An alert then goes out to app users trained in CPR within a quarter-mile of the emergency. Good Samaritans then rush to offer aide until professional help arrives. Brawner, an off duty firefighter, got the alert that Basse was having a heart attack in a nearby parking garage. “It makes such a big difference in everybody’s life,” Brawner said. On Wednesday, Jersey City Medical Center will be the first hospital in New Jersey to adopt this life saving technology. “This is an opportunity for us to really increase our cardiac arrest survivability for every minute that someone goes without CPR their chance of survival decreases by 10 percent,” explained Robert Luckritz, director of EMA at the Jersey City Medical Center. Jersey City Medical Center EMA has a response rate of six minutes, two minutes below the national average. They’re hoping that the app will help get users the help that they need even faster. “This is an application that will help us get citizen responders onto the scene before EMS arrives,” Luckritz explained. With sudden cardiac arrest every second counts and could be a matter of life and death. The Pulse Point app also offers instructions on how to perform CPR, and shows users where the closest automated external defibrillator is located. NEW YORK (WFAN) — Eli Manning has preached patience. Now we know why. The Giants’ veteran quarterback had said repeatedly that the West Coast offense under new coordinator Ben McAdoo was slowly making strides. On Sunday, it all clicked. Big Blue piled up 419 yards of total offense, including 176 rushing from Rashad Jennings , in its first victory of the season, a thorough 30-17 beating of the previously unbeaten Houston Texans . Manning finished a highly efficient 21-of-28 for 234 yards, two touchdowns and, perhaps most importantly, no interceptions. “I think the offensive line set the tempo for the day. They did a great job opening up holes for Rashad and Rashad ran hard,” Manning told WFAN’s Mike Francesa on Monday evening. “We had good timing in the passing game, got the ball out quickly and hit receivers in stride. … It was good to see guys making plays like they are used to making, getting a good feel for things. It was a good performance by the offense in a lot of ways.” The Giants handled J.J. Watt, running at the Texans’ all-world defensive end early and often. “When you rush the ball 42 times for almost 200 yards you’re going to control that defensive line,” Manning said. Now we’ll see how the Giants handle a little prosperity. They have a short week of preparation in advance of Thursday night’s game at the Washington Redskins (1-2). Manning said the quick turnaround can be brutal, especially for the road team. “You’re already behind,” Manning said of the preparation. “We’ll make sure the offensive line, running backs will meet some extra just to make sure we’re all on the same page. In this scenario you want to run plays you are familiar with, that you’ve run before in training camp and earlier this season. You don’t want to get too advanced where you are running things you haven’t really had a chance to practice this week.” Manning told Francesa even with only a few days to get ready for their longtime NFC East rivals, the fact that the Giants are coming off a win will only help them keep their mental edge. “It changes the morale of the team … There was a little more energy, little more excitement around the locker room today, and in the meetings. Guys are upbeat and excited about this week. When you play well off a big win it’s fun to jump right back into it and stay on that high and keep it going,” Manning said. The 11-year veteran went more in-depth on aspects of the win over Houston and the game plan for Washington. To hear his complete interview, please click on the audio link below.
